I know its a bit early to start talking about a fight next Saturday night but Id really like to get a consensus opinion on this bout. Hopefully this thread wont simply sink to the bottom like many others have (not mine of course, LOL) When these two fought last time out I picked Mayorga to beat Forrest and basically came out saying how much Mayorga would surprise everyone pleasantly...well both pleasantly and unpleasantly for he can be quite a character...

This time around, Id like to see if we can get some solid opinions by the time Saturday comes around. Im looking at the Don Best odds and they have mayorga at +220, +230, not too shabby if u ask me.

I know the Shrink likes to bet boxing and heck he cant be that bad or he wouldnt have the money to keep this place running

, so Shrink if you could too, let us know what you think.

All are welcome to post whatever they think and heck, Railbird your opinion is welcome also if you want to share it with us.

Mayorga +220, +230 next Saturday July 12th.

Bringing back your good memories: Slim giving away winners

This time around looks more complicated though. Last time Vernon Forrest went up to that ring, taking for granted he was gonna smash Mayorga. Mayorga is a good fighter, and he's got lots and lots of passion. And that's precisely what I would consider this time around:

1. Forrest is indeed a good fighter. He will not underestimate Mayorga this time. He has had the time to play that tape over and over again. He's got a good trainer and the experience to learn from his mistakes. His approach will be completely different this time.

2. Mayorga on the other hand is a very passionated fighter. The advantage he got last time was partly derived from Forrest not being prepared. And Mayorga has a history of fading off towards the end of the fight.

I think this fight is gonna be somewhat like the Oscar De La Hoya - Chavez fight. If you remember that fight, the golden boy took a beating throughout all the first 7 rounds of the fight. He then came back and took Chavez down in the 9th (?, don't remember). My point is if Mayorga hasn't improved on his resistance, Forrest might take him to a long fight just to wear him off, and then punish him. V. Forrest can pretty much be a technical fighter if he wants to, especially when fighting from the outside.

The better fighter will take the $$$, if this shit ain't fixed, anyway. With Boxing that's always a question.

True true, Walk, two things I want to point out.

The first, Mayorga just happens to have so much power in every punch, it just might be the fact that he swings every .34 seconds but he seems to have huge power. Huge power usually seems to come with a certain degree of ability to take punches. If im not mistaken and I remember correctly, Forrest has a frail body which doesnt bode well with that kind of power. At the same time, another thing that might affect the way I look at this is the stereotype that we have here about Nicaraguans. These are really tough people, who've gone through alot and are still standing, unlike us who've really had it easy the whole time....

My second point is the whole Las Vegas, Don King bit....Forrest doesnt really impress anyone off ring, Mayorga smokes, drinks alcohol, parties like Tyson, fu(ks, inhales, exhales, snorts (all the night before the fight) Some people love that, some hate that, but definitely, u have to say it attracts attention. Mayorga is the kind of guy that will hang around for a couple of years before finally fading away...

I hate to say this but I really like Mayorga. I dont know much about the technical aspects of boxing so perhaps some around here can help out.

Figured we'd post our thoughts on this rematch only because we did happen to catch the first one on HBO some months ago. Not experts or anything, we just love to watch/follow boxing as best we can....Ok, without a doubt we think Forrest came into the 1st fight vastly over-confident in himself having just come off back-to-back victories over the "great" Sugar Shane Moseley. He probably thought, as did we at the time, that if he was able to beat Moseley not once but twice then this Mayorga fella should be fairly game but certainly not a threat to actually win.
From the very start till his eventually being knocked the f*** out, Forrest fought Mayorga's fight plain and simple. Mayorga caught him totally off-guard with the power of his punches and with the success he had landing them early, and often. After a few rounds and numerous hard shots, you could clearly see how surprised Forrest was that this was happening. He must have thought to himself, "what the hell is going on?? I'm Vernon Forrest dammitt, the newly crowned GREAT ONE in this mutha. Ain't no way this clown is going to show me up, this is my time. I can punch better, faster, and harder than him. Watch me" And then, WHAM, its all over. Forrest and his pride got suckered into a street-fight with the guy whos better at the street-fight style than him.
In the rematch we expect to see a much more humble, focused, and prepared fighter in Forrest with a gameplan. And hopefully that plan is to concentrate on the technical side of this and box the way he did to get himself to the top in the first place. He will be under control and won't allow himself to get caught up in trying to prove he can hit harder than Mayorga because he can't and he should know that now. If he does these things he wins in the late rounds, if not he'll taste the canvas once again because Mayorga's gameplan will be the same as it was in the first fight. Hit him hard, a lot, and drop him before he drops you.

Forrest in the 7th if he boxes.
Mayorga in the 5th if they trade punches like the first fight.

*lol* you guys are pretty funny....As for your question SUPERWIMP, we're picking Forrest to win the rematch. This is just our opinion on who will win, not a bet on Forrest because if we're talking from a betting point of view you have to play on Mayorga or don't bet it at all. No chance getting us to lay the -250 or so odds on Forrest, just not worth the risk even if he does end up winning. Maybe at anything below -200 we'd be tempted but this fight can truly go either way so of course we'd rather be getting the nice dog price with the fighter thats proven he can more than hold his own in there.

08.07 - Former WBC Welterweight king Vernon 'The Viper' Forrest reminds me more and more of the legendary Tommy 'The Hitman' Hearns all the time in which he is tall and lanky for a 147 pounder, has a sniper of a jab and a booming right hand just like 'The Hitman'.

The 32 year old Forrest even loses like Hearns making a ring brain mistake in his last encounter with 'El Matador' who by the way was anything but a Matador in that fight walking into just about everything Forrest threw at him in order to tee off himself. Instead of using his superior height and reach advantage Forrest decided to do the same thing as Mayorga and exchange blow for blow, but just like Hearns' decision to try and put Marvin Hagler away early cost him a third round TKO loss, so did it Vernon Forrest.

Now the cigarette smoking, beer drinking, 2-Time World Champion Ricardo Mayorga must be riding the clouds right now winning two world titles back to back and in doing so defeating the ever dangerous 'Six Heads' Lewis by fifth round stoppage and pound for pounder Vernon Forrest by third round stoppage. Vernon Forrest whipped another pound for pounder Shane Mosley twice who in turn beat 'Golden Boy' Oscar DeLa Hoya, so Ricardo can not be blamed if he is feeling on top of the world.

But come July 12th Mayorga (24-1-1-3) will have the opportunity to prove his victory over Vernon Forrest was no fluke but the conclusion of a well thought out fight plan to lure the technically superior ring technician into a toe to toe brawl. If he can repeat the coup de grace that he did on Forrest (35-1) then he can consider himself up there with DeLa Hoya, Mosley, Barrera, Mayweather and alike. If he can't then he will just be considered a big banger who got lucky and will be one to avoid in the future. If Forrest manages to avenge his lone loss to Mayorga then he will redeem himself and the third round TKO loss will be erased as a lesson learnt the hard way.

I suspect Forrest will be getting it drummed into his head by trainer Ronnie Shields by now to box Mayorga instead of brawling with him and to "make this a boring fight" as I recall Ronnie Shields instructions to Vernon Forrest between rounds during the Mosley rematch. But I can't help wonder if Forrest has learnt his lesson or not from the encounter with Mayorga by letting his emotions over rule reasoning, when he got dropped in the first round logic dictates that he should have kept his distance after that and Mayorga at the end of his jab but Forrest got all emotional after that knockdown and ignoring his corners advice he went out there and tried to out brawl the brawler...big mistake.

29 year old Ricardo Mayorga is now so confident he is going to win again he is willing to do a $100,000 dollar wager with anyone who doubts he can't knock Forrest out in two rounds, one round less than in their first fight. The Vegas bookies have it 3-1 in favor of Forrest winning and I second those odds. So if anyone has a spare $100,000 dollars laying around somewhere and are adamant he won't be able to finish Forrest in two rounds I suggest you get the word out to Mayorga that you will take him up on his bet. I'm not a gambling man myself and I don't have a spare $100,000 dollars laying around somewhere but if I was and if I did I'd be happy to double my money.

If Forrest wins by a wide unanimous decision and doesn't get to much trouble from Mayorga then I think he'll move on to other opponents like IBF Champion Cory Spinks or WBO Champion Antonio Margarito if he still wants to fulfill his dream of unifying the welterweight division. If Forrest struggles to beat Mayorga or he has to pick himself off the canvas once or twice on his way to winning then this could set up a second rematch to settle who is the better fighter once and for all.

Prediction - Vernon Forrest WTKO11

Golpe a golpe

-SLIM-:

I'd take Mayorga as a value pick. +230 ain't bad. But I think it'll be a close fight. If Forrest has done his homework, he knows he's gotta be up to a long fight. Mayorga is known for his lack of ability to last; he's a heavy hitter, he's got that. But if Forrest fights his way out of Mayorga's right jab and the first 4-5 rounds, he might take "el Matador" down in the last rounds.

I'd play the following prop:

Will the fight go fill 8½ rounds? Yes +110.

I find value in that prop too.
