I personally think its a good thing.

Hell, you need an ID to do anything in the United States, basically you cant survive without one now. So, since its something you need anyways, what's the matter with showing it to vote?

You need an ID to get any kind of money to survive. How do you cash a check without an ID? Direct Deposit, you need an ID to open an account at the bank.

Traveling anywhere? Need an ID to get into the airport... Need an ID to go Greyhound... Need an ID to drive your car.

Want to do adult things? Need an ID in the casino ... Need an ID to purchase cigarettes.... Need an ID to buy alcohol.

Applying for government assistance/benefits? Need to show an ID.

Renting an apartment? Need to show an ID.

Buying a house? Need to show an ID.

Applying for a JOB? Need an ID

Trying to get unemployment?? Need an ID

Getting married? Need an ID

Adopting a pet? Need an ID

Renting a hotel/motel room? Need an ID

Buying a cell phone? Need an ID

Picking up a prescription? Need an ID

Donating blood? Need an ID

Renting/Buying or Watching an M rated game, or R rated movie? Need an ID

Buying cold medicine? Need an ID

You need an ID just to survive, get money to eat and pay bills, or even get medicine when your sick.... so how are people surviving without an ID anyways?

Bill Clinton and Ambassador Andrew Young think it's a pretty good idea. So do I. Make the Social Security Card a National ID card, for use in all the things you mentioned, including voting. You'd have to hire a TON of new Federal Workers to administer the program. But many virulent Anti Gov't People shudder at the thought of a National ID card, and/or increasing the Federal Workforce. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2014/04/09/7bc3b490-c044-11e3-b574-f8748871856a_story.html

[h=1]Bill Clinton urges adding photos to Social Security cards for voter identification[/h] [h=3]By Karen Tumulty, Published: April 9[/h] AUSTIN — With 34 states now requiring some form of identification at the polls, former president Bill Clinton and civil rights leader Andrew Young on Wednesday endorsed the idea of adding photos to Social Security cards as a way to prevent voter suppression.
The two made the recommendation in separate appearances at a conference at the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential library, which is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
The three-day event, at which President Obama and former president George W. Bush will speak on Thursday, has brought new attention to Johnson’s domestic policy legacy, which has been overshadowed in public opinion by his role in escalating the Vietnam War.
Clinton compared Johnson’s role to that of Abraham Lincoln, and said the Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act passed “because of President Johnson’s brilliant, pivotal leadership.”
It represented, Clinton said, the “power of the presidency to redeem the promise of America. . . . He knew what the presidency was for.”
That kind of embrace has long eluded the 36th president, even from members of his own party. When Clinton appeared at the Johnson library as a presidential candidate in 1992, he gave a speech in which he did not even mention Johnson’s name.
Clinton and Young, a former mayor of Atlanta, expressed concern that the voter ID laws could discourage poor and minority voters from showing up at the polls, which would circumvent the intent of the Voting Rights Act.
“I’m not against photo identification, but only as long as the cards are free and easily accessible. Providing eligible voters the ability to obtain a photo on a Social Security card eliminates any genuine concern,” Young said. He called on Obama to issue an executive order making such photos available.
Clinton did not go so far as to urge executive action. However, he said, putting photos on Social Security cards would represent “a way forward that eliminates error,” without having to “paralyze and divide a country with significant challenges.”

That Social Security card is a great idea, and wouldn't be hard to implement, except in the beginning when the mad rush is on to get one. Since everyone has a SS number, it isn't a NEW government ID at all.

Those who have a state ID (id or drivers license) would automatically have that picture transferred to their SS card online, and have it sent easily. This would clear tie-ups at the SS office, and could be done at home in a matter of minutes.

LETS DO IT!!

I am very much in favor of requiring photo id to vote.

Alabama just recently passed a photo id voter law , it will take effect with the upcoming June primaries. They have been running commercials on tv and radio with the secretary of state saying if you dont have a driver license or other photo id you wont be allowed to vote. ...but if you dont have a photi id you can get one for free at your county registrars and it is valid for 4 years and only takes about 10 minutes on average.

...However , i'm not in favor of putting id on social security cards. People keep their ss cards forever , unless you lose it you never have to replace it. ...But you cant use a 10 year old photo as id proof so that means we would all be having to re-new our ss cards every 4-6 years. This to me sounds like a huge federal expense.

If the piss poor state of Alabama can supply voter id cards for free lets please leave the feds out of this.

Because voter fraud is one of the tools the left needs to impose their vision of "social justice" on honest, hard working law abiding citizens.

its does seem to be a left wing issue more than a right one so you have point for sure.

How smart does one have to be to get a legal ID and then produce it to vote? What's the big deal about having to show one to vote? should be a non issue

In NYS, our drivers license is renewed every 12 years. No reason why a Federal ID Social Security card can't have the same time frame and procedure. Expensive, yes, but the benefits will be worth it, IMO, to have a Universally recognized US ID card that can be used for so many purposes. As verification technology increases, the security of the card, and it's uses can increase.
Will there be some fraud? Of course, there will always be fake ID's, Fake Drivers Licenses, etc, as some crooks are always trying to beat the system. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to make such a card.

What percentage of americans do you think dont have a photo id ? ... i have no idea.

But i would think most are elderly and quit driving and just never renewed their driver license. ...If there is any other reason you dont have a photo id , then i assume you dont need it for any other reason than voting. (or you would already have one for that other reason)

So for the federal government to issue new social security cards to every american that include a photo id that has to be periodicaly updated just for a small percentage of people to be able to vote would be the biggest waste of money ever.

...Now if you have reasons other than voter id that should cause the government to issue all new social security cards with photo id than please start a thread about it , but this thread was about "voter id"

^^ and keep in mind that just like Alabama, states with voter id laws allow people to get their voter id free.

Only the handicapped and elderly have a pain in the ass going to the courthouse to get it. .... well , if you're going to go to the pain in the ass to get out and vote , you can go to the pain in the ass to get an id.

This country is in big trouble if they allow those without ID to vote. However I'd hate to be someone in say E. St. Louis Illinois
being responsible for turning away ghetto mobs without ID's from the polling booths.

ID requirements are fine, but also:

1. Make it automatic that you are registered to vote after you get a state ID or a driver's license. If you are going to require some one to go through the process of getting the ID, you might as well save them the hassle of having to go through a different process of registering to vote.

2. Enlarge the voting period through absentee ballots for the sick and elderly and snow birds, and keep polls open longer or for more than one day. Ideally, voting should be over a three-day weekend or as long as an entire week.

But, of course, the Republicans really don't want more American citizens to vote, so these two proposals have no chance.

The fact of the matter is that American adults simply don't have much interest in voting. So the idea that voting should be made "easier" (it is already very, very easy) which opens the door to more fraud, is silly and stupid. And since liberals are silly and stupid people, of course they take that approach.

I think voting should be just as hard as getting a concealed carry permit for a firearm. And since to get 1 of mine I had to send a fingerprint card to the FBI, of course you should need an ID to vote. Especially since my right to a firearm is enumerated in the text of the constitution and the "right to vote" is not.

The closest thing America has to a national ID is not a Social Security card, it is a Passport. So let's make having a Passport mandatory to vote and double the fee. That way the costs of this flood of new passports will be covered (with any extra money can be returned to actual taxpayers). The fact of the matter is that the person living on welfare in public housing shouldn't have a vote that counts as much as mine. They have a vested interest in voting for anyone that will give them more "benefits" (my money) and do nothing but drain society's resources. Alternatively, I pay a shit ton in taxes, spend a boatload on consumer and grocery products, and my capital is used by businesses to expand, creating more jobs. Therefore, if you're a net tax consumer, you get .25 of a vote, whereas mine counts as 1.

So yes, I support having an ID a mandatory voting requirement.
