Report: Jim Calhoun showing ‘significant interest’ in BC job

According to a report from ESPN citing multiple sources, former UConn head coach Jim Calhoun is showing "significant interest" in the opening at Boston College.
Calhoun resigned from his position with the Huskies prior to the 2012 season, citing health reasons. Calhoun has battled cancer and suffered injuries in a bike accident. He won three National Championships during his 26-year tenure in Storrs.

Calhoun, who is the special assistant to UConn athletic director Warde Manuel, recently told ESPN that he was in good health and wouldn’t rule out a return to coaching. When reached for comment on Friday morning, Calhoun declined to talk specifically about any interest in the BC job. However, he did not rule out his interest in returning to the sidelines.
“I would not be opposed to talking to anyone about basketball,” Calhoun said.

Boston College dismissed Steve Donahue earlier in the week after four seasons and a 54-76 mark. They have not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
Despite ESPN’s report of Calhoun supposed interest, Yahoo!Sports says that it isn’t ‘mutual’.

Still lots of hate for JC, but this makes no sense on a lot of different levels. I cant see BC paying what it would need to pay to get Calhoun, winning isnt important enough to them. Plus there were alot of words back and forth, cant see either party getting past that. My guess is that Calhoun would try and use BC against an unknown school.

If I remember correctly he had nothing but HATE for BC when they flew the Big East and I don't blame him. WOuld be shocking if he ever ends up coaching there but it is basically his hometown (Braintree native), hope it doesn't happen. Why doesn't BC bring back Al Skinner ... you know, that guy who was voted Coach of the Year back in 2004 and always had them in the Big Dance? THe fact that Skinner has not reappeared at a big time school amazes me.

I'd be surprised if he took any job. He has a large UConn family, he's the godfather. He's one of the most fiercely loyal persons any man can be. He's enjoying extended vacations and time with his grandchildren. He's involved in dozens of fundraisers in CT and has a cardiac wing in a local hospital named after him.

He's 71, his wife would kill him, and he'd be moving away from his family since it's unlikely they can all just move with him.

although he loves Boston, he hates BC

Only his competitive spirit would make him coach again, and that spirit is strong so I guess it's possible.




and if BC said the interest isn't mutual (assuming there is interest from JC), then that athletic department is even dumber than they look

I think in terms of actual coaching Pitino is clearly the best of this crop. What his teams can do defensively not many other coaches can consistently impliment. Boehiem deserves mention as well....

A lot of rumors Izzo is gonna step into some role with the Pistons with Joe Dumars leaving. I read with Michigan coming back to prominence that he isn't recruiting as well anymore...

I love izzo and think he is amazing, but Calhoun 3 in 11 years and Pitino have been slightly better IMO.
