Just heard on the radio they may have locked the deal down for Fisher to be the coach:

The New York Knicks are expected to have a deal in place to make Derek Fisher their new head coach, ESPN.com reported Monday.

With one team bowed out of the Fisher sweepstakes, the Knicks are increasing their push to hire the active backup guard to become a first-time head coach.

The Los Angeles Lakers pulled out of the Fisher hunt, while the Knicks professed their ongoing push with the one-time Phil Jackson pupil as a top priority.

The Lakers think highly of Fisher and believe he will be a good NBA coach or executive in the future but changed course in their methodical search to replace Mike D'Antoni, who stepped down at the end of the season.

IMO this would be a great move for fisher. Most people (not named Jason Kidd) have to work their way up....assistant coach, college coach, etc....fisher gets to go straight to an NBA franchise and has someone like Phil Jackson over his shoulder giving him guidance. Even if he fails I think NBA coaching experience is nice to have on the ol' resume....and if the Knicks tank like they probably will, there is a chance Phil takes more of the blame than whoever the HC is

Fisher will be announced today.

Only the 4th guy since the '76 merger to go directly from player to coach.

Phil Jackson is so damn goofy looking. Hard to be in your 60's with fake hips and be 6'10" and look normal I suppose. I hope the whole thing is a train wreck. That is the only thing teams from major cities with strange accents deserve.

Also love how everyone commends these moves with Kidd and Fisher. Another blatant violation of ageism and what if they were white, there would be scrutiny, not praise.

For all I know Fisher will be an excellent coach, but why in the world do the Knicks pay him $5 millionaire year?

It comes down to market value. Were there a line of other teams looking to hire him that necessitated that kind of salary? Maybe so? Just seems crazy to pay a guy that much who has never coached.

Its his first coaching gig and he should be thankful for any NBA coaching job. I just can't imagine he'd have turned down an offer of $3 million a year.

Steve A Smiff would bitch to high heaven about that. He already mentioned it on 1st take. Something to the effects of "I am glad a black man finally got paid". No one batted an eye at it. Love how my other post about obvious ageism was left out.

Of course on the other hand, remember when Jerry Tarkanian briefly coached the Spurs and didn't know how to call a 20 second timeout. LOL

New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher and Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes were involved in a physical altercation Saturday night in Los Angeles during a party at the home of Barnes' ex-wife, sources confirmed to ESPN.com on Wednesday.
When Barnes arrived at the home, he got physical with Fisher, sources said. But Fisher did not show any outward physical injuries when he returned to practice on Tuesday. Fisher told Knicks officials he had enjoyed spending time with his children over the weekend, sources said.
Barnes and Fisher played together with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010 to 2012 and were said by one former teammate to be "very close" at the time.

The Knicks had Sunday off; Fisher missed the practice on Monday because of travel problems, the team said.
The Knicks, Grizzlies and the NBA became aware of the incident and were gathering information, sources told ESPN.com. A league spokesman said it was premature to comment.
Fisher said before Wednesday night's preseason game in New York against Brazil's Paschoalotto Bauru that he was focused on the game. He declined to offer specifics on the incident.
The New York Post, which earlier reported the altercation, reported that Fisher and Barnes' ex-wife, Gloria Govan, a star on the show "Basketball Wives LA," are in a relationship. Fisher filed for divorce from his wife, Candace, in March.
Fisher was asked about his mindset given the report about his altercation with Barnes and his reaction to it.
"Personal and private matters are personal and private. We're obviously public figures, but we're at work," he said. "So I won't be commenting on anything that's happened personally or privately for me.

I'm completely focused and committed to the team, not distracted in any way. And that's about it as far as my state of mind."
Fisher said he addressed the issue with the team about two hours before tipoff.
"I wanted to make sure that before they were asked about it at least that they heard from me directly about my state of mind and how present I am," Fisher said. "I've been through a lot in life and experienced a lot of things. And sometimes we go through things in life that we can or cannot control. I'm here, I'm focused. It's not something that's going to take me away from who we are and what we're trying to do. And I assured them of that. The only way to do that is to go out and do your job, and that's what we're going to do tonight."
Fisher said he wasn't concerned about the issue becoming a distraction for the Knicks.
"No, I individually can't control, I guess, how other people or players handle distraction," he said. "I think that's an individual process for each guy. Like I said to them, you try your best. I tried as a player for a long time to -- you try your best to mitigate any distraction.
"But some things you can't control. And I was very honest with them as far as that goes."
Fisher also didn't seem concerned that the incident could undermine his authority with the players.
"I get the question. I don't really, I guess, want to get into why I missed practice," Fisher said. "I guess I'll cover that at some point. I think you guys know my choice six or seven months ago in terms of my family and where my kids live. So as far as that goes, the guys are the ones that ultimately know who I am and what I'm about. They see me every day. Players are smart. They feel things very acutely. So if guys feel like I'm not here or not focused, they'll find that out. At this point [it's not an issue]."
Fisher, who is in his second season as Knicks coach, didn't rule out the possibility of legal ramifications in relation to the incident.
"I guess we'll see," he said.

  • SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. -- Authorities say former Los Angeles Lakers player and ex-New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after he flipped his vehicle on a California highway.
The California Highway Patrol says neither Fisher nor his passenger, former "Basketball Wives" reality star Gloria Govan, were injured in the crash early Sunday.

The car hit the shoulder's concrete curb and guardrail, overturned and came to a rest on its roof.
The Highway Patrol says officers discovered that Fisher had been drinking and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Govan's ex-husband is Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes. Fisher and Barnes feuded in 2015 in part because of Fisher's relationship with Govan.
When reached by ESPN, Barnes said he would have no comment.
