Under 54 New Mexico for 2 Units risking 2.4 units-
One interesting statistic, Coach Rocky Long has been on both sides of this Series as a Coach for 12 straight years and has never lost a game. As a quarterback at New Mexico, he ran the triple option and knows it well. That experience has produced teams that he coaches to have great success in stopping the triple option. His starting Quarterback is out for another week with a shoulder injury. It forced a true freshman into action and the results were mixed. They only threw 24 times and Bawden had 2 interceptions. The good news is that once they called plays for him to run he averaged 4.5 yards a carry. He's got a strong arm, but the game at the college level is likely to still feel fast in Game 2. Look for the playbook to be limited and less stressful on the young QB, not putting him into bad situations.
As for New Mexico, they lost their 2nd best running back last week and that will hurt them. That combined with a decent San Diego State Defense should help extend the game. New Mexico has their own issues at QB.....despite the fact that Lamar Jordan has played better at QB and led two come from behind wins, last years starter, Gautsche gets the starting nod....not a move the fans approve. Most expect the experiment to end after 1 quarter.......1 quarter is all I need.
New Mexico has scored more than 24 points only once all season and 4 of 5 opponents had Defense ranked 95th or worse. San Diego State is 50th, 41st in Rushing Defense. And Rocky knows New Mexico and knows how to defend the triple option. San Diego State has gotten into the 30's twice this season, but with a true frosh at QB and a limited playbook, I just don't think that's happening tonight. Might lose....always a risk, but win or lose this is hands down the best play of the night.....
