was looking at some stats before todays game

red sox team ERA was about 4.24 yankees were about 4.74 . edge... red sox

but the yankees line-up is superior you say. that's where there edge is. actually, boston has scored, couting today, 4 more runs this season than new york.

Red Sox ERA is lower and they have scored more runs? That was surprising. Boston has found ways to lose, Yankees have found ways to win, no doubt about it.

As a red sox fan, I see no real silver lining in these stats, but they are surprising.

At this point, Boston also leads the season series 7-5. Their is a chance, just a chance, that Boston, now with Nomar and Trot Nixon back, will make some hay and get the wild card. As a playoff team, should they be playing A LOT better then, they would be very dangerous.

If these stats mean anything, I think its that New York is more vulnerable than people may think. The red sox have no history of beating them so I would not count on that in the playoffs, but are the Yankees really so wonderfull this year? Their shortcomings may show up and they may be a playoff team this year, nothing more.

The secret (kind of) strength of the Yanks this year has been their bullpen. Led by Rivera, Gordon, Quantrill, and Heredia the pen has been lights out for opposition teams when Yanks get a lead after 6 innings.

The Red Sox lead the league in giving up UNearned runs.

Bad defense is killing this team.

Their offense is very comparable to the Yanks and their pitching is probably better as a whole.

The BoTards make too many errors and have too little team speed.

You guys lose games because Damon is the only guy able to get that extra base or make the big play in the field.

Yeah, you can hit. Yeah, your pitchers are dazzling.

But you don't know how to play Charlie Hustle ball.

Watch Jeter, Arod or Bernie bust their asses on the base path and you'll see what you're lacking (aside from Castaway).

4 errors yesterday and Beantown pulled it out, how many times can you do that in a season.

good points about all the unearned runs the Red Sox give up and their lack of defense.

also it just seems like the Red Sox are a little fat and happy salary wise. They don't seem to be too fiery and are kind of lackadasical. Sure they wan't to win, but they don't seem to be capable of doing the things they need to do. It starts to look like they just don't care. If they finish second and make the playoffs anyway, or don't make the playoffs, so what?

Manny for one is off in another world. I don't think he even keeps score. He loves to swing the bat, that's it. And then theirs all the guys who need days off for little injuries. Paging Scott Williamson, how is your forearm baby? Meanwhile they keep using Curtis
" Gascan" Leskanic in his place. Their are too many guys who don't seem to care about winning.

The Yankees on the other hand are fat and happy salary wise, but they don't play like that. They have the expectations of winning. 2nd is not OK to them, their front office or their fans. The Yankees seem to be driven to win.

At the risk of dooming him in the next inning I will say that Derek Lowe has been decent tonight. The 1st inning was really not his fault.

Rob - hows that for a quick hook? Hopefully it will not backfire on Francona.

This game is far from over. How do you give up 4 runs on one hit?

Nice easy 1-2-3 ninth inning. Well this will take a little pressure off Francona for a few days. Fenway really looks good for an 80 plus year old ballpark.
