Big inning vaults Rays to spring win

Club plates 10 runs in third frame; Bartlett goes 3-for-3 with an RBI

By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

RAYS 12, ASTROS 2
at Port Charlotte, Fla.
Tuesday, March 3
Astros at the plate: Michael Bourn displayed the speed that enabled him to steal 41 bases in 2008 when he legged out an infield hit in the first inning. He then walked in his second at-bat and stole his third base of the spring before scoring Houston's first run when Edwin Maysonet doubled to left in the third inning.
<TABLE class=floatLeft cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=125 border=0 vspace="0"><TBODY><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Rays at the plate: Jason Bartlett led off the game with his third double of the spring. Reid Brignac homered leading off the third after starting the exhibition season 0-for-11. Ray Sadler continued to swing an impressive bat by hitting a two-run double in Tampa Bay's 10-run third inning; he followed with an RBI double in the fourth.
Astros on the mound: Right-hander Brandon Backe made his first start and second appearance of the spring and allowed four earned runs in two innings before leaving the game in the third with no outs and the bases loaded. Righty Samuel Gervacio took over for Backe and walked in three runs by issuing consecutive free passes to Pat Burrell, Gabe Kapler and Dioner Navarro. Polin Trinidad relieved Gervacio, and the wildness continued, as the left-hander walked Adam Kennedy to bring in the Rays' fifth run.
Rays on the mound: Jeff Niemann, who is in the hunt for the No. 5 slot in the rotation, started and allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out five in three innings.
Grapefruit League records: Astros 1-5; Rays 3-4 Up next: The Rays will experience a little international flavor Wednesday by playing a team preparing for the World Baseball Classic. Tampa Bay will play the Puerto Rican national team Wednesday in a 7:05 p.m. ET contest at Charlotte Sports Park. Left-hander Carlos Hernandez will start for the Rays and will be followed by left-hander Randy Choate and right-handers Lance Cormier, Winston Abreu and Chad Orvella. Lefty Jonathan Sanchez will start for Puerto Rico

Rays use seven-run sixth to sink Nats

Zobrist's go-ahead three-run homer highlights outburst

By Zach Schonbrun / MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- It started with a measly single, a nonchalant, two-strike base hit to center field by Evan Longoria.
<TABLE class=floatLeft cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=125 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Then, a bunt by the cleanup hitter, Carlos Pena, which trickled up the third-base line long enough for him to leg out a hit.
Two simple, routine baseball plays, not for flair but purely function, both unexpected yet setting up the inevitable. As if on cue, Ben Zobrist hit the first pitch he saw. And as the ball sailed deep into the right-center-field stands, the crowd's ecstatic cheers couldn't cover up the whooshing sound of the life being sucked right out of the Washington dugout.
And from there, the rout was on.
Zobrist's go-ahead three-run home run off Washington reliever Jason Bergmann sparked a seven-run sixth inning rally that carried the Rays past the Nationals, 8-3, in front of 30,586 at Tropicana Field on Saturday night.
As if sensing the Nationals' vulnerability after replacing rookie starter Jordan Zimmermann -- who had held the Rays to one run through five innings -- Tampa Bay wasted no time pouncing on Bergmann and the bullpen.
Two batters after Zobrist's dinger, Gabe Gross hit a two-run home run and Longoria eventually returned to the plate for a two-run double to complete the rally.
In all, 11 batters, seven hits, seven runs -- a crooked number on a scoreboard for a team that had been quiet until then.
"It felt good off the bat," Zobrist said. "It's just a great feeling to know you're going from down two to up one, just like that."
Zimmermann looked sharp in his 10th career start, holding the Rays to four hits, one run, two walks and striking out six through five innings. He was in line for his first win since April 26.
It was the second consecutive come-from-behind win for the Rays. Tampa Bay was down, 3-0, after the first inning on Friday, but came back to tie it in the sixth and won, 4-3, on a solo homer by pinch-hitter Gabe Kapler in the eighth.
"We just need to keep pushing, pushing, pushing," Rays manager Joe Maddon. "It's starting to look more normal around here."
Maddon was quick to praise the performance of the slugger Pena, who tied Mark Teixeira for the American League lead with his 20th home run in the fourth, then followed up with his bunt single in the sixth.
"That was all Carlos," Maddon said. "It just speaks to the whole team. Of course, it's a hit for him, but he was playing the game of baseball right there. And we like to be able to do that."
Longoria finished 2-for-4, Reid Brignac went 3-for-4 and B.J. Upton went 1-for-4 with two steals. The Rays collected 12 hits.
"I got a good pitch to hit," Gross said. "It was kind of over the plate a little bit. My two at-bats against Zimmermann, I didn't see anything that wasn't on the black."
Tampa Bay also got a solid performance out of Andy Sonnanstine, who gave up a solo home run in the first inning to Ryan Zimmerman and worked out of a jam in the third to earn his fifth win of the year. Sonnanstine went 7 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, one walk and five strikeouts.
Sonnanstine was more than happy to sit through a long sixth as the offense tallied runs on the board and put him in position to win. It was the 17th time this season the Rays have scored five or more runs in one inning, the most in the Major Leagues.
"I felt a little stiff," Sonnanstine said about pitching after the break. "But I got through my warmup pitches and just kept attacking."
On a somber note in the ninth, Rays reliever Jason Isringhausen left the game after feeling discomfort in his right elbow after releasing a pitch. The 1-2 pitch sailed well high and to the backstop and the 36-year-old Isringhausen pointed down to his elbow and left the game. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
The sour news hardly put a damper on another comeback win for the Rays, who moved to two games above .500 for the first time all season, with a chance to sweep the Nationals on Sunday afternoon. "We don't take anybody lightly," Maddon said. "We got kind of fortunate [Friday], and today, once we got Zimmermann out of the game, we got back to looking like ourselves."

Kazmir on track to return by Florida series (ten games between now and then).

He'll likely replace Sonnanstine, thus giving us

Shields
Garza
Price
Niemann
Kazmir

And overall this season, Niemann may be the best

He's worked 63.1 IP

If we give him a once a month "mulligan" (the first inning of season -5 ER; three innings at Boston -- 5 ER; and 3.2 innings vs LAA -- 4 ER), his remaining 55.2 IP sport a rather formidable 2.43

Rays pitching over past 26 games is allowing just 4.1 runs per game, which is a pace equal to Top5 pitching in MLB

And their offense in those same 26 games is scoring almost a run per game higher than the preceding 38 games.

PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pinch hitter Willy Aybar got a lucky bounce, doubling off the third base bag in the eighth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays completed a sweep of the lowly Washington Nationals with a 5-4 victory on Sunday.
Carlos Pena opened the eighth with a double off Ron Villone (3-3). After Ben Zobrist struck out, Aybar hit a ball down the line that hit third base and angled away from third baseman Willie Harris into left field for a run-scoring double.
Gabe Kapler added a homer and three RBI for Tampa Bay. Dan Wheeler (2-1) worked a perfect eighth and J.P. Howell pitched the ninth for his third save.

Alberto Gonzalez drove in three runs for the Nationals, who have lost 15 of 18.
Tampa Bay, which was down 4-0, tied it at 4 on Kapler's two-run homer in the sixth. He has a homer in each of his last three games, including a tiebreaking pinch-hit solo shot in the eighth inning of the Rays' 4-3 win over the Nationals on Friday. He hadn't hit any homers in his first 34 games this season.
Gonzalez put the Nationals ahead 1-0 on an RBI single in the second. He hit a two-run double off James Shields in a three-run fourth that made it 4-0.
Tampa Bay got within 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Kapler's RBI single and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt by Dioner Navarro.
Shields gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. Washington rookie Ross Detwiler allowed four runs, six hits and five walks over six innings.
Tampa Bay has won a season-high five in a row and are three games over .500 (34-31) for the first time this year.
Notes

Tampa Bay LF Carl Crawford was rested, but did enter as a pinch runner in the eighth. ... Washington LHP Scott Olsen (left shoulder tendinitis) allowed two runs and four hits over three innings in a minor league rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse. ... There has been at least one homer hit in all 33 games this season at Tropicana Field.

Garza steals the limelight

By Marc Topkin, Times Staff Writer

Published Friday, July 24, 2009
<HR noShade SIZE=1>TORONTO — There was immense hype and attention surrounding Toronto ace Roy Halladay on Friday as he made what could be his last start as a Blue Jay.
And that couldn't have been any better for Matt Garza.
The Rays starter with the predilection for the spotlight delivered his best start of the season in matching Halladay in a tremendous old-school duel, and his teammates came through in the 10th inning to produce a 4-2 victory.
"It's always fun facing a guy like Halladay," Garza said. "You've got to be tip-top facing a guy like that. I was just trying to match inning for inning with that guy, and pitch for pitch, keep my pitch count around the same area as his and just slugging it out and slugging it out and go the distance with him. And that's what happened."
Garza and Halladay each went nine innings, allowing a pair of runs in what Rays manager Joe Maddon termed "kind of a classic" matchup.
"You don't see that very often anymore, both guys going nine … and pitching out of tough situations and still having their best stuff in the ninth inning," he said.
Halladay came off after the ninth to a roaring standing ovation from the Rogers Centre crowd of 24,161 fans, who didn't know if they would see him in a Jays uniform again pending a possible trade, though he did say after the game, "Right now, I think I will be here."
The Rays — who had beaten him a majors-high five times in 2008-09 — took advantage of his departure this time, scoring twice off Scott Downs.
Evan Longoria's two-run, two-out bloop double to left capped a rally that started with a walk by Michel Hernandez and included heads-up baserunning by Gabe Kapler in not getting doubled off, a fielder's choice grounder by B.J. Upton and a Carl Crawford walk.
The win improved the Rays to 53-44 and kept them 6½ games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East. It also guaranteed at least a .500 finish on their 10-game second-half-opening road trip, at 5-3 with two games remaining.
The Rays' first goal was to get a hit, which they did when Crawford singled in the first, ending their outs streak at 29 — the last one Wednesday, 27 straight in Thursday's perfect game by Chicago's Mark Buehrle and the first one Friday.
The next goal was to score, and they got two in the third off Halladay by combining a walk, double, passed ball and two sac flies. And that was it off Halladay, who retired 16 straight in one stretch. For his night, he allowed four hits, fanned 10 and threw 115 pitches.
The Jays answered with two runs in their third, taking advantage of Longoria's throwing error and getting two two-out hits.
But Garza kept them there.
"Probably his best game of the year right there, no question," Maddon said. "He seems to match up well in big moments. I'll tell you what was good. He gave up those two points, very composed through the whole ordeal, sat down, went out and pitched well following that. There was no emotional stuff tonight."
J.P. Howell pitched a perfect 10th inning for his 11th save.
Garza, taking pitching coach Jim Hickey's advice to pitch to contact, allowed five hits, struck out nine and — what he was most proud of — not walking any while throwing 116.
"If I could find what I do different on days like this than the days I don't,'' Garza said, "then I'll find what everybody's looking for.''

It's a different market down here and the TBRO has been smart to exploit it

TBR enjoy either the fourth or fifth best television ratings in all of MLB. For a team that is broadcasting essentially to only about half of one state, they're making a lot of dough selling advertising in place of physical tickets/rake at the ballpark.
