I've got a lot on my mind of late. About the NHL that is. And just thought I'd share it here and try and get a little feedback as it seems the season is in high gear and the forum has been a little quiet lately. What do you think?

Would someone mind explaining to me just exactly's wrong with the Montreal Canadians? This franchise last season seemed to be on the verge of drinking from the cup and although 10 games over .500, they sit 2 points away from missing the playoffs altogether. I remember Savant last playoff season coming in and posting the celebration video after their 1st round win. You would have thought they won a war they were partying so hard. Year after year they are always so fundamentally sound and well, after being shutout by Atlanta last night..I just dont get it. Was the loss of Ryder and Streit THAT big?

Quietly Iron Mike Keenan is doing a masterful job in Calgary. Do you remember when Sutter hired him after being out of coaching since the 03-04 season? How many people questioned THAT move? Maybe it was just that Jim Playfair was THAT bad. Playfair had no business running that group. Does he have a shot at winning coach of the year? Major props to Mike AND Darrly Sutter for taking a chance and pulling the trigger at the deadline like he did. The more I look, I may have underestimated this team. If they can get some secondary scoring they may be playing for the cup in May.

Where's Big Shot Maxxx? Can't imagine he's following Phillies preseason baseball right now.

How does Keven Lowe still hold a position on the Oilers? This team has missed the playoffs 4 out of the last 6 seasons and are currently in 9th in the West today. And other than their finals appearance in 06' they haven't won a 1st round since the 97'-98' season. Huh? In what other hockey city is that acceptable? Evidently his "on ice" accomplishments far out weigh his "off ice" failures. In his world he get's promoted to team president. WTF?

Let me repeat something I've said in the past. No one.....can beat the Detroit Red Wings this season but the Detroit Red Wings. No one. They sat pat at the deadline for a reason. Bobby Clarke used to think if he traded and drafted the biggest and toughest players in the league that they could "beat" teams down like they did in his day. That shit don't work today. You can't hit what you can't catch. I wonder what Scotty Bowman thinks of Philly picking up Daniel Carcillo for the stretch run? Calgary seems to have that same philosophy.

I can't remember looking at the playoff races and feeling how many teams have a legitimate shot at the cup this season. Moreso...a LOT of damn good teams will be golfing early this spring.

If the playoffs started today the Central would have 4 teams making a go of it. So much for the weak Central.

Not one team has given up more goals this season than the Minnesota Wild. Problem is, as of today they sit 11th in the West. What's wrong with this picture? Doug Risebrough you really need to get this team some scoring help. If for nothing else...do it for the fans that follow that team religiously.

I think Glen Sather may have just saved his job on Wednesday. Morris is no Norris candidate, but he may be just what the doctor over there. A steady big fella on that blue line. I think just the influx of new blood will do them a word of good. And if anyone watched Avery's 1st game you have to give him some credit. They did every thing they could to unprogram the reprograming in his first game and the big idiot did a great job of biting his tongue.

If the playoffs began today the Blackhawks would meet Vancouver. Sure sounds like a great matchup to me.

And how about the Penguins. Did this team suddenly become legitimate overnight? A new coach, Gonchar, Chris Kunitz and Billy Guerin. They know what it takes to get there and now they seem to have a supporting cast for Sid the Kid.

The Flyers. I remember jdigae01 asking a few days ago WHY would they upset the apple cart like they did and trade away Upshaw for Carcillo. Then I heard on the radio today one guy's opinion was the move was made to offset the Rangers picking up Avery. If you look at it like that I guess there's some reason to it. I just don't understand. But......has Philly done anything in the last 20 years that resulted in a good aftermath? The hit's just keep on coming with this outfit.

New Jersey has come out of nowhere to possibly become the favorite in the East. Who could have scripted that story as late as mid January? Before today's loss they were 18-4 since Jan 13th.

What happened to Crazy? I like that boy. Hope he comes back soon.

I hope the 8 current Eastern playoff teams are the same 8 when the season ends.

Someone put the Avalanche out of their misery. Somehow I still believe if they would have addressed their goaltending problem early on [Khabibulin] they'ed have been right in the think of this as well. Someone needs to be accountable for this mess for crying out loud. It' s just not the same with them on the sidelines. Although I'm not missing any sleep over this personally.

What do you say we all pick a team you think will win this year's cup?
And revisit this thread in June to see who had a good vision and who was just blowing smoke.

You know I like the Winged Wheel.

Anyone else want to go out on a limb here?

And finally the Puck R Us fantasy league. Everyone who joined enjoying the league?

Anyone think they can beat the Brawlers?

Time for HNIC. Let's see what Dandy Don does this week for an encore.

That foot of his won't go any further down his throat can it?

Did I miss anything revelant?

Peace!

No. I just think things are coming together very nicely for Columbus this year. Hitchcock finally has the personnel to show off his coaching talents. And now Nash has a bit of a supporting cast. Mason's looking sharp tonight but that's not the reason their taking it to Detroit. Their doing a great job of clogging the lanes and have grabbed an early lead which is important in beating Detroit IN Detroit. Wings have made too many mistakes and the BJ's are capitalizing. This one's over. 5-1.

I'll take the Canucks to defeat the Caps in the finals. This would have looked a lot better a month ago when I was the only one on the Nucks' bandwagon, but nevertheless....

If either Dallas or Edmonton face San Jose in round 1, I would put a few bucks down on them. Don't believe the hype, the Sharks aren't built to win in the playoffs... team is full of guys who would be better off with a 60 game regular season. Shut down their first line, and they also lack any scoring... and in the playoffs, every team has that "shut down" defensive pair ready to go.

Me for one. I thought it was just a matter of time before he alienated himself with Kipprusoff to the point one of them would be gone.

How does Keven Lowe still hold a position on the Oilers?
A team with all the talent in the world but seemingly no heart or effort for stretches at a time. Meanwhile teams absolutely decimated with injuries like the Blues or Islanders play hard night in an night.

Let me repeat something I've said in the past. No one.....can beat the Detroit Red Wings this season but the Detroit Red Wings.
It should be a concern that while no team in hockey has scored more than Detroit only two teams in current playoff position have allowed more. As poor and inconsistent as the goaltending in Edmonton and Dallas has been this year they sit only 2 goals worse than than the Osbad/Konklin tandem.

Couldn’t agree more. We need Pittsburgh in there. Carolina brings nothing to the NHL PR table.

If the playoffs started today the Central would have 4 teams making a go of it. So much for the weak Central.

What a difference a day makes. If they started today the Central would only have three, same as the Southleast.

Off for some breakfast..I'll be back with more thoughts regarding your well thought out thread. Thanks for the banter.

I believe we already did this before the season started. I think I took Dallas with Marty Turco winning the Vezzina. No sense in making any more of a jackass out of myself. I'll stick with the Stars.

Well...a Dallas loss tonight and were back to 4 and don't count out St; Louis as you mentioned earlier. Their 6-3-1 L10 losing only to playoff bound teams.

I see Don Cherry was on the Washington owner last night. And I hate to jump on but listening to him on xm always makes me think he might have taken the short bus in school and inherited a bunch of money and bought the Caps. He's a terrible interview.

Yes but do either one of those teams have a locker room full of guys with SC rings all over their fingers?

Don't get me wrong, it's not like i'm not concerned a little bit about the deal in goal, I just think every one of them buckles down come April.

Vic how come you left out commenting on Bushays comments about the Habs? Is it because you are just as baffled about their struggles this season as myself and the rest of the hockey world without an answer?

I'm not sure anyone knows

Even Carbonneau can't answer that question.

The most important decision Sunday was to break up the trio of Andrei Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec and Alex Kovalev. Rookie Max Pacioretty replaces Kostitsyn at left wing.

"They were our best line last season, but for whatever reason, the chemistry hasn't been there," Carbonneau said.

The way they looked early this year I was convinced they were the class of the east. Sure they are lacking on the PP, are not the most physical team around, have had some injuries, but for whatever reason they have lost whatever chemistry they had in Oct/Nov.

It's too easy to pin it all on Price. Whatever dysfunction they have started way before his wheels came off.

They played much better with the line replacement last night and their PK was phenomenal as it has been all season ranked 8th I believe

Well, I think maybe today's firing will send a good message to the team and spark them. I'm a big believer in Bob Gainey in what he accomplished in Dallas and as a player.

And on a side note just watching this Toronto/Ottawa game tonight makes me think that other than in Edmonton...all the Canadian teams at least seem to be heading in the right direction. I just woke up from a short afternoon nap and the Tor/Sens game woke me up. The Toronto play by play guy does such a good job calling a game I almost thought for a moment I was half sleeping through a playoff game between these 2. He makes Curtis Joseph sound like the Cujo of 2000 not 2009.

They just caught Spezza with an illigal stick. Great tv work by the Leaftv camera's catching Spezza trying to hide the evidence.
