How else could Auburn be a 4 pt favorite over USC and then all the donkeys in here bet on Auburn, people are brain washed. Cal was a 31 pt underdog in their opener. I laugh when I see WSU getting 9.5. LSU is living a lie, there is 15 teams better than them, USC is 2 touchdowns better than anybody, including Oklahoma.
RAILBIRD WEST COAST FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE OVERGROWN FAG SURFERS THEY SUCK AT FOOTBALL,ALL YOUR BEST PLAYERS COME FROM FLORIDA AND VIRGINIA.THE ONLY GOOD PLAYER WHO CAME FROM CALIFORNIA WAS TOM BRADY THE REST ARE QUEERS LIKE DREW BLEDSOE
Rail is partially right, and anyone that knows the fabled history of the Holiday Bowl , or "Mr.Feb"/Mack Brown loved the dog tonight.
The Pac-10 is constantly overlooked by the media(and to those whom go to bed too early), it always is solid in Bowls.
I believe it is partially due to being motivated to "show" America what it's got every year or show-up the bias, also it always has great Offensive combos(QB-to-WR), it usually plays a good portion of it's Bowl games in West Coast/Mountain Region locales, and here is the sh!t-tosser to West Coasters..playing in soft-defensive flag-ball environs with 70 degree weather all year leaves teams physically fresh.
By the same token Rail, one could argue that one of USC's three big wins, and Oklahoma's biggest "quality" wins looked diminished tonight.
Rail, your beef is more with the Big-10 & Big-12 this fall than the SEC(admittedly down from top-to-bottom in contrast to the past), despite all your SEC-bashing..but the next few days will tell the tale.
I just wish USC would've had to earn their forthcoming AP Poll Title against either LSU or OU..and yes they can play with either.
sportsbet- When is Penn St going to get rid of that senile, charity case coach that should have resigned five years ago? Joe Paterno has become embarassing to himself and Penn St. I am very surprised at how a once proud, solid program has become a slow, boring, middle of the road Big Ten team.
It's hard to just dump a guy that's basically been the man for 5 decades. It's a sore subject with me for a lot of reasons and most of the alums I know are split down the middle on their opinion. The university will not force him out because the guy has given his life to them (not to mention just about all of his salary the last 10 years) and to force him out now would anger a lot of the PSU fanatical old-timers. I can tell you Joe's program is usually very clean but he is not doing as well a job of keeping tabs on his kids like he used to. There are too many non-football problems going on with these players here and if they don't get a handle on it this team will continue to be a huge waste of talent. The kids have to take some responsibility for their actions. It's very frustrating to watch them struggle like they have since the tragedy against Minnesota.
This is also my personal opinion but joining the Big 10 wasn't exactly the best move for them either. I mean it's good for a lot of our other sports and the Big 10 is an excellent conference but Penn State football misses out on a lot of games you used to be able to take for granted (Pitt, Syracuse, ND, Bama, West Virginia). The Big 10 has definately turned out to be much more grueling and difficult than the Lions ever imagined when they joined. You expected to have blood wars with the traditional powers but who would've thought we'd win 1 Big 10 title since joining in 93.
You have to give Joe some credit for his college football knowledge too. He called for a playoff 10 years ago when we got screwed in 94. He also wanted to form a conference of Eastern elite teams and even give ND a chance to join but at the time teams like Miami wanted to stay traditional. Now the new look ACC is pretty much a replica of what he was looking for in the early 90's. The guy may be calling plays from 1973 but he is a living legend and it would be tough to watch him leave the program and watch a lot of players who commit just to play for JoePa take off.
It wouldn't be a bad thing if the transition happened during a down period like now but we have to grin and bear it and let him run his course. It's not easy while we're losing that's for sure.
Agreed Sportsbet, JoePa made a mountain out of a molehill, but he is also currently turning Mt Everest back into a butte!..he is pig-headedly abusing his well-earned right to do so.
But in an "what-if" scenario, even if PSU weren't having OSU & Mich show them whose conference the B-10 was owned by in pigskin, and PSU were still playing an indy schedule of Md, WVU,VT, & Syr..that would be a much more imposing schedule than back when a stronger PSU program ran over an weakened state of aforementioned teams..parity is here even in college ball.
Shoe it's true they've struggled but it's not just Joe's fault. Losing Jerry Sandusky (defensive coordinator) after 34 years on Joe's staff didn't help any. My #1 problem used to be Joe's staff adapting to the way college football is today but they have improved in that department. He's starting to play the young guys more so he can put the best TALENT on the field rather than just experience. That hurt us the last few years in recruiting with some of these local stars that didn't want to sit and wait 1 or 2 years to get into games. The days of us owning the Northeast in terms of recruiting are over and they have to adjust. I think they've done a better job this year and you knew going into this year it was going to be a struggle. I mean they had 4 or 5 guys go in the first round of the NFL draft the year before off a team that really had a lot of talent. Next year they have 18 starters back (assuming a few legal problems get cleared up) and you know these kids that are there now came to play for Joe and not some new replacement coach. Yes we have to draw a line sometime but I'm glad they are letting him coach next year's team at least. I think with Joe's relationship with the trustees he will be able to call his own number when he decides it's time(regardless of public opinion).
I agree the Indy schedule would be just as tough. I for one would love to see us playing more regional games because I remember those being the ones everyone got the most excited over. The one thing about Penn State is they tend to play anyone anywhere and Joe seems to always want a "classic" game in September which doesn't help the stamina of the team come crunch time in the Big 10 schedule. I mean we have to play Nebraska, Miami, Notre Dame and teams like that out of conference because they are traditional powers but I think it works against us at the same time.
They've been at it longer than just about any staff in college football. Over 130 years of experience in coaching so you'd figure they could devise something that would work. It wouldn't hurt to find another quality defensive coach (I love Bradley he was Jerry's understudy but the defense couldn't tackle at all last year...it was embarrassing).
As you can see it drives me nuts. This stuff will continue to haunt me until they get back to doing what they've done forever at Penn State...win football games.
