Al Davis in a press conference just announced Brown's release. Davis say Brown can still play in the NFL but not for the Raiders

Davis says he has to many recievers. Talk about beating around the bush.

Eventhough it would have been nice to see him end his career as a Raider, maybe this is best for him. He doesn't have blazing speed but is still a very good possession WR with dependable hands.

What good is speed, if you don't have the hands to go with it. I'd make room on my team for Tim Brown anyday.

He can still play, but last year and to a lesser degree the year before last his age started to really show on the field. Last year he looked sluggish and was dropping some easy catches. That said, he still had somewhat decent stats for a #2 or #3 NFL receiver so there might still be oportunities out there for him to contribute to a team's offense.

Brown probably can still compete but unless he is ready to do a Jerome Bettis and play cheap (around $1 million) then no team will use him. IMO Brown is (unfortunatly) all done.

Well, I would agree, wilheim, except for the fact that Brown doesn't percieve himself as being finished, maybe party due to being alongside Rice the past few years and seeing what he was able to do. So I imagine if a team will give hime a decent roster spot he might be willing to take a small paycheck.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) Tim Brown is leaving the Oakland Raiders after 16 prolific seasons.

Salary cap constraints and the reality of reduced playing time for the 38-year-old veteran persuaded owner Al Davis to part ways with the last former member of the Los Angeles Raiders. Brown, who will be released Thursday, holds most of the club's receiving records, and his 240 games in Silver and Black are the most in franchise history.

''This is a very emotional day for me. I have fought the battle as much as I possibly could and tried to restore the image as much as possible to the Raiders,'' Brown said Wednesday.

''This won't be the end of Tim Brown. I'll surface somewhere else, probably.''

He ranks second in NFL history with 14,734 yards receiving and third with 1,070 catches. His 99 touchdown receptions are tied with Don Hutson for fourth, and his 14,734 all-purpose yards are fifth.

Brown won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame before the Raiders drafted him in 1988. He soon established himself as an elite receiver, appearing in nine Pro Bowls and going nine straight seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving from 1993-2001.

Brown had 52 catches for 567 yards and two touchdowns last season, but his streak of 175 starts ended in December.

He also appeared to fall out of favor with former coach Bill Callahan. Jerry Porter and 41-year-old Jerry Rice will be the Raiders' top receivers this season.

Though Brown's quiet style sometimes seemed at odds with the Raiders' brash image, he was one of the team's most popular players even during the franchise's dismal seasons after returning to Oakland.

''It's emotionally difficult. It's a part of your life,'' Davis said. ''Other than your family, this is your family. We've had many great players, but there are certain players you fall for. It's tough to lose him.''

If Gruden was willing to give Ricky Dudley a chance at Tampa Bay, who knows, maybe they'll give Brown a shot? It would be almost comical seeing Gruden coaching Garner and Brown this season.

Buffalo could use anybody.

We have Moulds, a #1 draft pick rookie Lee Evans, and an ordinary project in Josh Reed.

He'd be great with the two young WRs.

Journeyman, yeah, I'd say Rice is an anomaly and might play until he's 60-70 years old.

Sorry to see him go. Hard to beat father time though. One of the classiest players in the NFL.

LANDER..

Last night in round table NFL discussion my people and myself stayed in the office and looked over the NFL props..WE all felt when discussing the BILLS that they needed a wide receiver who could run strong routes and get first downs by simply holding onto the ball..Their QB may not be that mobile, but he can deliver the ball..

Today I hear about BROWN and after reading your thread I could not agree more..Does he want to play in the cold though?..Owens in Philly doesnt seem to mind..I hope the BILLS make a run for him because I dont think he is thru..Do I see Mr. Parcells lurking?..Maybe Jerry will give him some more shits and giggles money..We shall see..
