Hypothetically,

A player calls in a halftime wager and says OKLA ST. During the readback, the clerk says OKLA and the bet is made. The next day, when the account is empty, although OKLA ST covered, the player calls the book and listens to the recorded taped playback. The player agrees he misunderstood the readback by the clerk.

If you ran the book, what would you do?

if the tape clearly says ok st. the bet should stand but he should have listen to the clerk more carefully and corrected her immediatly!

That depends on the customer. If it is a customer that has tried to pull a scum move before the play will probably stand as a loss, but if the player has a clean and loyal record i'd probably give him the win but i'll tell him/her to be more careful in the future with the readback.
The clerk on the other hand

If the player said "Okla St" on the phone, I'd pay the wager. Why should the player be punished for an error by the clerk?

Imagine if you went to 7-11, and the cashier only gave you $2 change instead of $6. You walk out the door and don't realize the error until the next day.

Somehow you manage to get a copy of the security video, and the video clearly shows that the cashier paid you $2 instead of the correct $6. If you complained to the manager, how would you feel if they said "Well, the video proves that you're right. But too bad, next time you should count your money before leaving."

I'll admit...my 7-11 example is a bit far-fetched...but humor me!

To confirm means to certify. It's the gambler's responsibility to make all final wagers stand. so as in placing an online bet where you must follow their lines like them or not and then press submit as is on the tel. he agrees and gives his username/password. If I was manager I would grade it a loss but for originally wanting to take the other team I still feel it's the players' responsibility on everything final. Because he has to say he agrees.

This is why I prefer to place my bets online.

Too many hazards with phone bets. Bad connection, bad cell phone, bad English, etc.

I tend to be as customer friendly as it gets but there are also limits.

If the customer says Oklahoma State and ends up getting Oklahoma, I will award him/her the bet because it was the clerks fault that he/she put in the wrong bet but I will also talk to the customer and explain to him/her that the readback is final and that whatever he/she has in the computer is what they'll get. That it is his/her responsability to pay attention during the readback. Any and all mistakes will be corrected then, not after. After all, that is what the readback is for. I'll put in a note in his/her account for future reference.

this happenned to me at BODOG all their clerks are not that proficient in english but that only shows where they really do business. they credited me the win and the bet about 700 dollars props to bodog, they played it to me on the phone and i said what i wanted, they read it back wrong. Clerks read the line as the fav sometimes and assume you want the fav.

As much as I would like to grade it as a loss (to hold to the letter of my policies) or cancel the wager (recognizing both parties' mistakes)...I would treat it as a winner (best long term decision for business).

Slim is correct. Thats how i would do it. Because, believe it or not there are people out there who would wait for the outcome and if OK covered, would not say a word.

I assume there was an Oklahoma 2nd half bet available at the time as well as an OK St. 2nd half bet. Otherwise I would wonder just what bet the clerk gave him.

And then I would wonder what the line was in the other game because the clerk would have had to read that back too. If the player agreed to a wrong line AND a wrong team then I'd have to say the player is at fault and so the bet stands as a loser.

If OTOH the line for the OK St game was read and the only mistake by the clerk was leaving off the word "State", then I think the book should pay.

If by coincidence the lines were exactly the same, well, then it's really a case of he says she says and there's no outcome which suits everyone so a middle ground solution is probably best -- ie. cancel the bet

If a line was never read back, just OKLA, bet should void.

This is a great topic IMO.

My 2 cents:

First of all, i agree that you have to look at the clients history and see how good of a player in your book he is, one can always bend the rules a little bit for people that have been (and lost) with you enough time. Also, if this is not the first time this happens, sorry amigo, no chance you're getting your money, the same way i'm pretty sure i wouldn't be getting a call letting me know that he mistakenly won a bet that should have been a looser

(Or the 7/11 calling me letting me know that they mistakenly gave me less change that a i should have have received as change)

But the point that i think we don't have to miss here is that gambling is our choice, no one is forcing us to do it, so we are assuming the responsibility when we play with the money, we know clerks are humans and can make mistakes, that is why we have the readback, to make sure they didn't, they are as humans as us when we call asking to delete a wager because we hit the wrong button.

All this said, i think that the smart way to go for a first timer, is take the bet as a no action, as it was our fault for not correcting on the readback, as the clerk's for not paying attention, and then put a note in the account, that way we'll make sure readback does count next time.

I would pay the player as if a win. I cannot see grading it a loser. I can respect a decision to cancel the bet.

I agree with Slim's approach.I would pay the guy but also explain that next time he doesn't listen to his read back he is out of luck.And DB is right,a customer's history would enter greatly into a descion.

A lot of books make it mandatory for a clerk to say to a customer something like the following: Sir please listen carefully because all readbacks are final, you have Oklahoma -2 RISKING 550 to WIN 500, if that is correct will you please repeat you PIN. and password. When readbacks are done this way there is not a lot a customer who verifys the readback can do. Even if it is clear on the tape that he asked for Oklahoma St. to begin with. Problem is some clerks get lazy, and take shortcuts, or players get in a hurry and don't want to listen to the 10 second little speach. Books that listen to all their clerks tapes will catch the ones that ignore the policy, and take disciplinary action. Don B is correct about putting a note in a players accounts so a book has a way of identifing players who repeatedly do not listen to the read back.
