Quintana to Cubs

In a stunning development, the Cubs have acquired lefty Jose Quintana from the crosstown rival White Sox, per club announcements. Top prospects Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease are going in return, with first baseman Matt Rose and infielder Bryant Flete also included in the package.

solid trade for both teams, but this trade could really help the chisox

Yeah good trade for both teams. Cubs paid a lot but they desperately needed a young #2/#3 with some years and cost control. Quintana was the best available option. I can understand wanting to win in this window.

Sox gonna be beast in a couple years.

Cubs were gonna need a lot of help at SP after this year, with Arrieta and Lackey leaving. This gives them a #2 at #5 money, freeing them up to go sign Darvish or similar.

Not a fan of Darvish. I think all of those Japanese league pitchers are one-trick ponies and break down a lot.

Yeah, just using him as an example b/c he's the only real "ace" that will be available in FA this offseason. Understood his durability and age are both concerns. Not sure you can call him a one trick pony as he has like 6 pitches, but he's not at the top of my list either.

Maybe it comes in the form of making another trade and taking on a larger salary than they otherwise would have been able to.

The point is, the Cubs benefited from the Q trade from multiple angles.
1. They get Q through 2020
2. They get him so cheaply they are able to fill their other upcoming SP hole with someone who might not have as club-friendly of a contract
3. They presumably will eventually get to move Montgomery back to the pen

Jury will be out for awhile on whether or not they overpaid, but I think the price was appropriate
