Not a fan of Darvish. I think all of those Japanese league pitchers are one-trick ponies and break down a lot.
Yeah, just using him as an example b/c he's the only real "ace" that will be available in FA this offseason. Understood his durability and age are both concerns. Not sure you can call him a one trick pony as he has like 6 pitches, but he's not at the top of my list either.
Maybe it comes in the form of making another trade and taking on a larger salary than they otherwise would have been able to.
The point is, the Cubs benefited from the Q trade from multiple angles.
1. They get Q through 2020
2. They get him so cheaply they are able to fill their other upcoming SP hole with someone who might not have as club-friendly of a contract
3. They presumably will eventually get to move Montgomery back to the pen
Jury will be out for awhile on whether or not they overpaid, but I think the price was appropriate
