avoid sugar (juice, soda)
more protein, less carbs
more frequent meals
snack on things like popcorn and nuts that are healthier
eat veggies to make you feel full
cut your portion size in half and when you eat frequent meals, eat even when you're not hungry, and when you are hungry, only eat until you are no longer feeling hungry.

drink water all day long.

great advice, even advice I can follow thru on....but that may stop it from increasing, but will not eliminate it. The exercise is the hard part.

Gut fat is usually due to sendentarism and bad eating habits.

Cut sugar and bread/rice... avoid them as much as you can. If you are gonna have bread have whole grain.
Avoid sodas entirely... avoid processed "fruit juice" that is more sugar than anything.
Buy a good blender... go buy lots of fruits and vegetables. Drink fruit/vegetable juice when you are feeling hungry between meals.
Eat small portions, eat at least 4 times a day, 3 meals and 1 snack. Dinner meal should be light. A big salad or clean proten such as fish or chicken.
If you are gonna drink alcohol say bye to beer and rum, drink vodka, scotch or wine.
Go jogging at least 4-5 days a week, 30mins minimum. Follow suit with some push ups, abs, squats. If you are not used to it start with 40 push ups, 200 abs, and 50/100 squats... you can do 10/50/25 and repeat it 4 times, that will help inmensely, and you can double up the amount of reps in a month or two.

Once you are fit enough you may want to look for a hobby sport, swimming, playing ball with friends, even some MMA training. All you need is time and the will to do it.

eh
90% of losing weight is diet
unless you're still in your 20s, exercise is less of a factor. exercise certainly helps but the hardest part is really the dieting.

more great advice, thanks! I think the 2 hardest parts are sugar and bread. Sugar because there is so much sugar around even in things you would not suspect had any. I love bread...is naan bread ok since it is non rising (forgot the real term for it) ?

Dude, excercise is hard to begin with but once you get used to you will get addicted to it, cause it releases dopamines in the body and raises your self esteem... soon enough youll start feeling bad when you dont excersise.

I know what you mean, cause I start doing some running for 2 weeks and feel good about it then I stop for 2 months, etc etc...the problem is even when I run, I don't go far between stops and haven't run alot because I am so beat up from all the smoking I do

Cigarrettes suck man, I still smoke but a pack lasts me a week or two. Im not really addicted to it... they dont taste like they used to. Try quitting cigs, they lead to a horrible quality of life in your old age... my dad is fucked from it, cant even walk 20 feet without starting coughing and he still smokes. Wont listen.

Also, when eating whole bread never use sauces like mayo etc. Mustard is fine, its lean. Use avocado, spread it around the bread, better than mayo 1000x times and tastier.

it's tough to keep fresh stuff because it requires so many damn trips to get the stuff, but I hear what you are saying. Wish I was rich enough for personal chef, that would be a BIG help

The diet is by far the hard part. You must eat 6x a day, you only gotta workout 3-5x a week. Diet is 60-80% of success at any fitness and health goal or accomplishment.

let me be clear..BOTH will be hard for ME, but the diet will DEFINITELY be less of a challenge than running, etc

I don't care to run, and your goals can be easily accomplished without it.

so I make changes starting tomorrow and follow some of the suggestions/advice given in this thread, how long before results you can actually see? Weeks? Months? Years?

You dont need mad skills to prepare decent lean meals, just the time and patience... do some research online, youtube has great cooking vids... best free help out there.
