Someone help me out here. I know the odds of someone dying in a plane is less than a car.

But i'm trying to explain to someone that there is a much higher % you will be in a car crash than a plane crash. The odds are hard to explain because we probably have 1,000 auto trips to 1 plane flight

There no quick math if you are looking for an equation. Everyone has different car usage.

About 35-40k people a year die in car accidents. Hundreds of thousands hurt badly. A few million probably need some medical consultation.

Not that many people die in plane crashes.

And probably 100,000 auto crashes for every plane crash

Not even close.

Average person gets into 4-5 car accidents in their lifetime. You just don't instantly die when it happens, which is good.

I'm not talking about death rates....I'm talking about accident rates

obv a plane has an astronomically higher rate of death upon a crash than a car

At least in a car, on the ground, you have a chance of survival.

Plane goes down kiss your azz goodbye.

That's the only equation that matters...

Despite big-budget Hollywood films' depictions of plane crashes, flying is actually the safest mode of transportation. In fact, the odds of a plane crash are one for every 1.2 million flights, with odds of dying one in 11 million. Your chances of dying in a car or traffic accident are one in 5,000

Now talk about these Small 4-10 seat planes that have been going down lately ...

Was talking to some friends a couple of weeks ago, and they are planning a trip to nantucket this Summer.
they kept on saying we will take a small plane there ... I told them i would meet you guys up there.

Not going in a small plane ... just not happening !

It's not even close, air travel much safer. People are not aware of how many people are up in the sky in a given minute... fwiw, I think the number i saw was like 700, 000 around the world.
I'm guessing for those who want to fly into ACK they must have the $$$ - so it beats doing the double ferry thing,at least I think NYC to ack requires a second boat. Montauk pt. may still have the single ferry to either Marthas or Nant.

Mechanically, less can go wrong in a smaller plane so safer than commercial. Just hope the pilots are sober.

I'm not sure where people are getting these statistics, but your chance of dying in a (commercial) plane crash is much greater than 1 in 11 million.

It is something along the lines of 1 in several hundred million.

There are more than 850 million people flying into & out of the US every year. The last time a commercial airliner crashed was July 2013 (Asiana flight 213) and only 3 people died.

Do the math.
