What would that be in comparission to upsets in other major sports?

Would it be as big as USA hockey beating ussr in 1980?

Would it be like a 16 seed beating a 1 seed in the NCAA tourney?

Just how big would that be?

In my opinion, at 300-1, the USA winning the WC would be a huge upset but not as much as a #16 winning the tourney. Europeans feel the USA has gotten much better in the sport but still have a bit to go before they can complete on the same level as a Germany etc.

If you told me the USA won the WC this year I'd say "wow, that's awesome. They must've went on a great run." But, I would not be shocked to see it happen. Not shocked like a FGC winning the NCAA tourney. That happening would be a heart attack kind of shock.

Oh, my fault. Yeah, I'd say you can kind of compare USA winning the WC to a #16 beating a #1. You know it's going to happen at some point and you'll be shocked when it happens but not over-the-top shocked if that makes any sense.

it would be huge like all this stuff in one game

Fred Brown passing the ball to Worthy

the Webber TO

3 tries at a last second corner like the 72 USSR team

and a last second header on the third try like Lorenzo Charles dunk

USA is ranked 13th in the world in soccer they are ranked in the top half of this tournament. It wouldn't be the biggest upset in the history or anything lets calm down with that

Most soccer experts dont put a lot of credence into those rankings. They seem to constantly being tweaked.

Years and and years ago, USA was somehow ranked in the top 5 or so in the world and everyone knew it was so wrong, they started tinkering with the ratings. So that tells you they are flawed.

Ill put it this way, despite being ranked #13 in the world, there are a whole heckuva lot more than 12 teams that would be favored in a match vs USA. Hell, Ghana was favored over us last match.

As to the original question, I think it would be pretty comparable to an 8 or 9 seed winning the NCAA tourney.

So not overly surprising to see them advance or even pull off an upset or two, but very surprising to see them in the final four (or even elite 8) or winning the whole thing.

No, the US is one of the most underated soccer teams there is. They dominated their qualifying pool leading from Day 1 until the end. Then score in the 1st minute of the world cup. Happen to give up a goal at the end and score right back. They are on top of the 2nd tier to win this thing. All of these matches are so close, they are 1 of the 12 teams that could win it all. In 2006, Italy won it and the US gave Italy a draw in their group match

I think USA's first world cup trophy will be a massive upset, if only because the rest of the world thinks so poorly of us soccer. We are like the kid brother that always loses....eventually, when we grow up we will be better, and that time is coming.

It wouldn't be as shocking as if a number of other teams like Iran or Honduras won it. It'd still be considered a pretty sizable upset, though. USA can be best described as a mid-major. On their day, they can beat any team in the world. But also not good enough to consistently beat teams they should.

Imagine if Butler had won the national title when they lost to Duke, or if VCU had pulled it out when they made their final 4 run. That's probably about how it'd be viewed on the world stage.
