Question for the People in Costa Rica

What was the EXCHANGE RATE when you got here.

For me it was $1 = 110 Colones

Isn't costa rica's exchange rate something like a crawling peg exchange rate.. so it is predictable?

When I first visited, the rate was $1 = 270 colones
last time I was there it was about 330 colones.

The current rate appears to be 410 colones.

Its predictable until it blows up! People that don't know any better believe in that. If that is your country what you are essentially saying is I have no problems with you printing too much money so you can overspend on your budget and I believe you can keep the overspending under control so it doesn't become a crisis. FAT CHANCE. I said it before, I will say it again, a country awash in foreign exchange and investment that becomes too heavily dependent upon it is a time bomb waiting to happen. Argentina part II is the fate of CR if people there don't do something about it soon. It gets more dangerous by the day as those investment dollars start drying up and the government responds by shaking down the foreigners that are there. Eventually it hits a breaking point where the investors want no more part of it and the expats there flee before they lose everything. Sad to say it, but I see no one doing anything about it

If you think the jump in Colones is bad has anyone been on vacation to Dominican Republic?

1 US = 17.5 Dominican Pesos

August 2003

1 US = 35.6 Dominican Pesos


This country's economy is getting seriously worked over by their corrupt government. Oh well, tourists like it.

When I got here in 2000, $1.00 was 312.
What is it now.......409? Thats how fast the rate goes up. I don't even know what it is now.
