Where did you start playing and how young?

If a guy was interested in learning hold em and the right way to play...

Where would you suggest he start? Online or get in a small live game?:grandmais

If you want to learn the right way ti play, dont play online. You have to really adjust your play to beat the retards online.

Just google free poker training, free poker videos, free poker lessons, free poker software......Seriously if a guy wanted to he could get all this free stuff, learn from it, get experiance at it and in 6 months time be able to beat 85% of players in most any low/middle stakes game the 1st time he ever sat at a table with real players online or live.......

Good advice. Tons of free info available these days.
You'll learn at a way faster rate online because of the sheer number of hands you'll see.

More hands = more situations = more decisions = more learning = more money.

I suggest you find some friends that have home games... that way they can call you a fish for making dumb moves--but to each his own style. I've called down ACE/KING plenty of times with rags for the fact that i can tell some of the guys have face cards but a rag kicker so my hole cards are still in the deck--i call to see the flop heh.

My grandmother and I would play penny poker every Friday night from the age of 5 till I was about 15. And they wonder why I like to gamble. lol You should start with live play, did you not see 60 min. last Sunday?

people saying start with live play are nuts...

what would make you a better basketball player 50 shots a day or 500?

online you can find any limit at any time and you can get in a shit ton of hands.

not only that but if you know what an edge is, and how to get one, then it will not matter in the long run if the players are donks. actually you would rather play against bad players, obv.

micro limits online is a good way to start... also buy a couple of books, super system is a good one. once you feel comfortable and are beating the small stakes online, live is the way to go imo. games are much softer at the casino than online.

LOL at people saying play online is worse than live. At any comparable stakes, online play is much better. But it is sometimes easiest to play with friends in a small stakes live game. Anyway, read some basic poker books: Super System, Harrington on Hold'em, etc... and practice. Good luck!

Getting Started in Hold'em - by Ed Miller

It's the perfect book for a beginner, without it being too basic.

I started playing hold em about 2001 (before moneymaker blow up)
we had always played the 7 card games (chicago, etc..) and my friend said lets try hold em.

it was fun, then after moneymaker obsession its all we played.

So i learned strictly from home games with FRIENDS (this is key, if you want to learn, play with friends, not a bunch of guys from work or something) especially if you are learning.

if you want to learn now it is tough - online is very weird (but i agree with the guys that say play MICRO stakes, might as well get a good feel for how the game works, etc...)

Online you get a lot of hands - but depending at what limits you are playing vs donkeys (no help) or you are way outclassed (no help plus you lose your money)

FLAT OUT if you want to LEARN go buy this book:
Winning Low Limit Hold-Em by Lee Jones

Goes over all the basics (not retard basics like what is a flop) - but things like check-raising, semi-bluffing with draws, etc....

buy this book
read it
play low limit online to learn
then for fun go play small limits at casino
