I have played in tournaments for 15 years.
Personally find them much better for me as I have shown a long term profit, whereas in LIVE action I am down lifetime.
Remember, a NO LIMIT HOLD'EM tournament will have a completely different strategy then a LIVE STRUCTURED game because one, it is NO LIMIT and two, it is a tournament.
But for you personally and others, one of the biggest advantages you will have if you shop for the right tournament versuses live play is the less house advantage.
A normal live game may have as much as a 10% rake from the pot, which is HUGE to overcome unless you are a VERY talented player.
On the other hand, it is not uncommon where you can find tournamets with only a 5% take of the entry fees and sometimes find them with 100% payback and MORE!! This fact alone should set you out and about to look for these tournaments.

My problem with tournaments is that your effective stakes go from being diddly-shlt at the beginning to humongous at the end. So compared to the cash game you have a very small EV at the beginning and are overbetting your bankroll at the end. Still, I play them because there is a beginning and an end and it's a struggle for survival. That's what makes 'em fun for me.

you can't really put a hurting on anyone in a limit game, you can to some degree in a no limit and pot limit games, but still they can just dig out more $$$. Tournaments being at 0=being on the sidelines.

I think that is the worst part about tourneys...they reward short term luck. There is certainly skill involved but the bottom line is that due to the blind escalation (and its speed) you need to hit cards.
In a ring game seeing a guy go bust and pull out more cash is a good thing assuming he is a worse player than you. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm winning (or losing) seeing a poor player go to the pocket is a welcome sight. I'd roll up an ATM next to him if I could.

The 1 table 10 people tourneys at Party last between 45min - 1 hour
I played a 1300+ player multi player NL tourney where the winner...me
was crowned after 6-7 hours.
I say if you play in any tourney with more than a couple of hundred you should budget >3 hours.
