Put 14 gallons of gas into my 13.2 gallon tank today

I was at the local Exxon Mobil and I somehow put 14 gallons into my Honda Civic and it kept going when i can usually only add about 11 gallons to it (there was no gas leaking under me). The place seemed kind of shady and I even confronted the owner about it because i think he fudged with the tanks. He told me that i t was normal to overfill the tank and that everything was normal. I had at least 2 gallons still left in the tank as the E light just came on when i pulled in.

I tried calling the customer service number that was on the tanks but it was for Connoco-Phillips apparently and they told me the sticker had to be at least 4 years old. I'm thinking something is up here, has anyone else seen this before?

EDIT: For a second I was wondering if the guys at Firestone did something to my car. I went straight from Firestone to the gas station and this is the only gas station i've ever had this happen at.

I wouldn't rely on a car's stated gas tank capacity to be too relevant.

A better test might be a 5 gallon can, filled somewhere else, put into the Civic after careful measurement (maybe right to the top), then see what it takes at the suspect station. It better not be off more than a tenth of a gallon.

Look on the pump for a sticker that shows the inspection date & the name of that "weights & measures" agency. That's who you want to contact.

If you're right, and it's as blatant as you think-not only will the station get their ass fined, but you may even get your $ back and\or a reward.

There was a big study by one news channel out here about this exact same thing-and they do have "legitimate" variances-both on the up & downside, but nothing to the extent that you're talking.

As gas prices soar, you may not be getting what you pay for, even as you pay more and more.

State authorities on Thursday announced 350 gas stations were fined out of 1,023 stations that were inspected during a recent three-day operation in all 21 counties.
The most common violation (62) found by inspection teams was inaccurately calibrated pumps which dispensed fewer gallons into a driver's tank than the amount the customer paid for.

Weights and measures inspectors also discovered pricing discrepancies and inaccurate octane ratings.
Sate Attorney General Anne Milgram calls the investigation "deeply troubling," but conceded there is no way for a consumer to determine if he's getting less gas than what his receipt shows.
"What they're going to have to know is that we're out there doing it for them. To me, it is critically important the state and the counties play this role," said Milgram at a press conference at a West Orange gas station.
She encouraged customers to get out of their cars when they get gas to make sure they get the octane they requested and to verify if prices are properly posted.
If you spot something wrong at a gas station, like the prices being changed more than once per day, you are encouraged to call the state at 732-815-4840.

I think my simple test with a can would show this kind of variance easily. If you take the 5g can, and fill it to top, and it takes 5.27 gallons, then empty it in to whatever, then it takes over 6 gallons ( or even 5.5) at the suspect station, you have found something significant. Anything over 5.4 in this case is surely beyond standards.

TT is right, contact the weights and measures of your local state offices,,, let me tell ya, if they are skimming they can face HUGEEEE fines,,, believe me those fukkrs are on the ball to catch dudes that pull sht like that,,,

what is FARRR more common is they will put MID grade gas into a Prem tank,,, thats the real money maker, and alot easier to NOT get caught,,

do you know how difficult it is to mess with the QUANTITY of gas??

so 35% of gas stations rip you off with pumps that give you less ?

I can see 1-2% off ( at the most) with temperature variations, or whatever else effects it.

-the majority of full service gas stations are legit but watch out...sometimes the attendant will not reset the previous sale. For example, the previous sale was $10 and you tell him to put $40, he will start from the $10 mark so you wind up with $30 gas. Very Popular.

-Do not show the attendant your paying cash. You tell him put $50 in and your holding a $50 bill it opens the opportunity to rip you off by putting in only $40. The majority of customers do not check the pumps after the fill up.

-Avoid credit cards or bank cards. Scrupulous employees can skim your card/password and clean your account out.

-and finally...depending in what state/country your in gas pumps are not calibrated very often...usually once every 2 years. So your expecting to pay $3.70/gallon but the pump is calibrated to pump $3.90...happens all the time.

-one last thing and I was debating to post this or not....do not go to a East Indian run gas station for the reasons listed above.

I think most people pump their own, and use a CC, at the pump and I'm sure you mean unscrupulous.
