Pull the Goalie with 3 1/2 minutes left down 4-1 in a meaninless game??

did Pitt coach just screw this total up or what? Pulled the goalie down 4-1 with 3 1/2 minutes left (not on powerplay either). Gave up the empty netter.

Cant believe it. SHAFT why would Pitt coach shame the game like that? I had under 6 goals tonight and got a push.

Try - I feel for you, only possible reason is that the Pens have nothing to lose at this point.

then just keep the goalie out down 5-1 as well, and 6-1 and 7-1.

Im emailing the Pittsburgh team office and the NHL on that total crap coaching by Pittsburgh. that is 100X worse than anything Pete Rose ever did.

Pitt Coach basically Fixes the total on the game. Unreal. Wonder how much him or his guys won playing over 5 1/2?

That one is quite puzzling indeed. I am sure if you asked him though it would be some comment about working on the empty net setup or something, wink wink.

I have no problem if they really want to work on that than do it. Keep the goalie out the rest of the period and work on it. did they do that? They might have I did not see it. this is just such a shaft. Maybe my worst beat ever considering the human choice to allow this to go over for no reason. No possible reason.

I know if the goalie had stayed in a team still might have scored in a legitimate way so you never know but if you lose that way its part of the game. this way smells and I will write to the NHL offices and the Pitt front office as well.

Wonder if there was any in game exchange betting on this total and any large bets taken during the final few minutes?

im done bitching for a few minutes anyway.

Yeah, we have all been there. I remember a game some years ago, back when many of the totals were 6 or 6.5! Anyways a good buddy of mine had a game bet under 6, I think one team was the Rangers or Hawks, it was on in the sports book at Stardust and I watched the end of it with him. The score was 1-0 with 2:35 left in the 3rd when the score goes to 2-0. No big deal right? Then the team behind pulls the goalie and it becomes 3-0. Losing team drives into the zone and scores right away, 3-1. Team pulls the goalie and has a big charge into the zone and a player from 10 feet away in the slot hits the post and caroms right to a defender who just fires it away to clear the zone and it bounces off the glass near the blue line and wouldn't you know it just slides neatly all the way into the other empty net! Oh he is dying now, but says ok, well 4-1, no empty net. That thought escapes him as the losing team starts crashing the net again. Player takes a shot from the point and the goalie goes to snap at it with his glove. Looks like he has it and will hold on. But wait, all of a sudden you see it slip out! It was like a moment frozen in time, like you can see it in slow motion almost. The puck trickles out and falls almost on the goal line and in his haste to reach for it he knocks it in his own goal! Unbelievable. I didn't even want to look at my friend's reaction, but I sure can remember hearing it. But it isn't over yet. Losing team takes the draw at center ice with the sixth attacker, 35 seconds left. My friend can't watch anymore, he goes outside. A bunch of us sitting there can totally feel his pain going from 1-0 to a push like that. The winning team fires the puck into the losing zone with about 10 seconds left. A losing player tries to make a long pass but it goes right to an opponents stick as he does a one-timer off the bad pass and the thing hits the crossbar and comes down, but harmlessly rolls away and the final buzzer sounds. The guy gets a push, but was that close to having three empty netters beat him. The rest of us let out about the loudest "OHHH!" when that puck hit the crossbar, we were so sure the guy was doomed.

Damn if only I could remember more details about the game I could have posted it as an article, it was one of those little moments in sports betting you just never can forget.

I've seen some pretty weak shots on goal in some games lately. I mean, if you're going to shoot the puck at the goalie the least you can do is put some speed on it and not shoot it right in his bread basket.

Try to skate around him or switch the sides of your stick.

Wildbill that is a tough beat for sure. An amazing tough beat. But nothing in that description goes against the basic and agreed on strategy of the game of hockey. The coaches acted correctly in their decisions.

For the Pitt coach to pull a goalie down 3 with 3 1/2 minutes left in a meaningless game is the only time in the history of the NHL that a coach has acted that way.

I figure he wanted a full 3-4 minutes of empty net so he could be pretty sure (near 100%) at least one goal would be scored. His players were not in on it but in that amount of time one team would score (especially into the empty net)

Why else would he do that?

It was on the PP - I was watching the game.

Andrew Peters was in the box for Buffalo and the Pit PP (effectively 6 on 4) was putting intense pressure on the Sabres. Unfortunately for the Pens, Buffalo cleared came as the PP expired and Peters stepped out of the box for a breakaway empty net goal.

SCORING SUMMARY...
3rd Period
...
16:30 Andrew Peters (2), Empty Net - Assist: James Patrick

PENALTY SUMMARY
...
3rd Period
...
14:23 Peters: Tripping - 2 min.

7 seconds after the penalty expired. (and Peters is slower on ice than Ken DennisTheMan in a spelling bee contest)
