my definition of a professional is someone who does it for a living. how can you lose money for 27 straight years without doing something else?

Losing money 27 straight years is not a pro. You are what is known as a LOSER gambler.

However he could have made significant money with bonuses. In this era a prudent bonus player could make a nice living with break even gambling record.

Congrats on the great year. Even is better than losing and better than about 95% of the gambling population.

I think the point is that most of the people on this board who claim to be pro gamblers are FOS.

most people who say they make money are FOS. I'd say very few on this forum make money and those who do:

1 - Log all their bets.
2 - Bet from an entirely seperate betting bank.
3 - Have a staking system.
4 - are very selective in their betting.
5 - don't chase or go on tilt.
6 - use unique insight to have an edge.

This rules out 95%+ here - who amonst this forum would dare to declare themselves as profitable without the basic criteria above?

i think there are quite a few on these boards that make money gambling. the reason i think so i because i have made around $9,000 gambling in the last 12 months (which isn't all that much but it is better than losing) and i am not all that sharp. there are people posting here much sharper than me and guys who are much better cappers also. i have met a few of them...i know they make money.

Agree with this list 100%. I have made money 7 out of the last 10 years using most of the criteria mentioned in the above list.

that's weird because, i really like you elk.
I don't mean to be a pr!ck, but I think you sound a little bit full of yourself saying you made 9 dimes this year and it's not a big deal. I mean, that's a nice chunk of change which I'm sure 99.9% of the people here would take anyday...

Anyways, my emotions just got the best of me. If you made that much, congratulations, you deserve it.

didn't mean for it to sound that way at all. i am not a big gambler...i bet $200 - $300 a game. the only reason i won is because of things learned here. prior to 2002, i lost every single year. not only did i lose, but i played at $hit books that may not have paid me if i did win. now most of the time, i don't even cap my own games...i have made most of the money i won betting based on info posted here so, i do not take the credit. i give it to certain posters.

by the way, 9 dimes in not very much at all compared to what some of these guys have made. i have met a few personally that have won 15-20 times that amount...and i believe them.

if anything, i am kicking myself for not having the balls to bet $2,000 per game...then i could have paid off my mortgage by now.

Only numbers 4 and 5 are required to make one's living gambling.

why brag about being a full-time,professional gambler? What's so great about that? Seems like kind of an empty life. Based on the earnings I read about in the other thread, doesn't seem like a decent way to make a living either.

Gambling is best as a hobby. An expensive hobby only for people who can afford to lose a few bucks. Quick story: I had this guy working for me a few years ago. Smart immigrant from one of the Eastern Bloc countries. Well, he was one of my best employees until he discovered gambling. He lost about 80K in savings, his truck, and even had to pawn his watch. His wife left him and went back to the old country. Finally, I had to fire him for borrowing money and not paying me back. Last I heard he was living in a crack house in the Bronx. Makes me sad every time I think about it....
