Falcons linebacker Prince Shembo has been arrested on felony charges of animal cruelty after he allegedly kicked and killed his girlfriend's dog. Atlanta waived him soon after news of the charges broke Friday.

Denicia Williams, Shembo's ex-girlfriend, called police April 19 after returning to Shembo's home to pick up her Yorkie named Dior after a four-day stay. She found Dior injured and unresponsive. Dior later died at Duluth Animal Hospital.

Police said the dog had a fractured rib, fractured liver, abdominal hemorrhage, thoracic hemorrhage, extensive bruising and hemorrhage in the muscles of her front leg and shoulders, head trauma, hemorrhage and edema in lungs, hemorrhage between the esophagus and trachea, and hemorrhage in the left eye with internal injuries.

Shembo, 23, was selected by Atlanta in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Notre Dame product appeared in all 16 games last season and started three.

Another classic example of these schools acting like they have high academic standards. Anyone that gets straight A's is not killing dogs.

I have to change the channel when they have that cruelty to animals commercial that usually airs in the middle of the night. The one asking for donations.

It is just a fact. Anyone intelligent enough to truly get into Notre Dame with no strings attached doesn't kill dogs. I know you live in South Bend and all, but have some sense. I know people that went there on real merits. These aren't the people that kill dogs. Probably the smartest guy I ever met in life went there. It is a great school, but football doesn't play by the same rules as the real world. It's like how I say RG 3 is a moron and what is the first response " he had an offer from Stanford". Same basis. For normal students, probably hard to get accepted. For exceptional athletes, the bar lowers dramatically. Jameis Winston wouldn't even be allowed near a college campus if not for athletics.

Nowhere near a fact....other than all colleges have lower standards for athletes.

Intelligent people do stupid/bad shit all the time. ARe highschool dropouts the only ones who abuse animals/kids/spouse, kill people? Was there never a mass murderer or serial killer with a college degree from a good school?

Stupid to think grades/college degree have much to do with abusing animals.

Look at this North Carolina scandal. Athletes saying they never even went to classes. I know it happens more than just at Carolina too. They just got caught.

I love how these guys sell out the school too as soon as it doesn't effect them.

You have a fair point Loomis... prolific serial killers are often borderline genius, What they lack is "emotional intelligence" to be able to understand their own emotions and impulses, plus the ability to maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. I studied them obsessively when I was 20 and I was studying psychology.

Ted Bundy was a borderline genius.
