It is that time of year to start to prepare for the GOY wagers that will be up in June. The first thing I do is study the schedule. I look for what should be the obvious lines such as Notre Dame -3 vs USC, TCU -3 vs Baylor, Michigan State -3 vs Oregon, etc...If the lines are too big, or if the away team is favored in those type of games, that is the first indication that we may have a bad line.
Next, we look for lines to stay away from. Example. OU vs Texas. OU will be favored, but by how much. Anything between 2 1/2 and 6 1/2 is a red flag. These two teams are so flakey that anything can happen, especially in that game, so we tend to stay away from them.
Finally, we give lines to all of the games that we may be interested in. Normally there is a team or two that the linesmaker will either like or dislike. Those are good lines to study. Northwestern has always been a favorite among the folks at the Nugget. I do not know why. We try to find teams that we think will be "sleepers" and look at those lines. We then prepare to specifically look at lines involving those teams.
GOY wagering can be fun, if you are prepared. Watching the action is always fun because it is like the stock market floor after a majer event has taken place. Totally crazy.
