Kentucky Derby (G1) upsetter MINE THAT BIRD (Birdstone) will compete in the May 16 Preakness S.

Derby fourth PAPA CLEM (Smart Strike) is definitely bound for a rematch with Mine That Bird in the Preakness.

Four other Derby starters are considered possible for the 134th running of the Preakness: runner-up PIONEEROF THE NILE (Empire Maker), third-placer MUSKET MAN (Yonaguska), seventh-placer JOIN IN THE DANCE (Sky Mesa) and 10th-placer GENERAL QUARTERS (Sky Mesa).

Pletcher had indicated Sunday that there "was a chance" Join in the Dance could come back in the Preakness.

The Preakness S. (G1) gained two new shooters on Monday when the undefeated Derby Trial S. (G3) winner HULL (Holy Bull) and Delta Jackpot S. (G3) victor BIG DRAMA (Montbrook) were confirmed for the May 16 classic at Pimlico.

Other possible new shooters in the Preakness include Withers S. (G3) victor MR. FANTASY (E Dubai); Grade 3 runner-up TAKE THE POINTS (Even the Score), who exits a fourth in the Santa Anita Derby (G1); Lexington S. (G2) runner-up CONSERVATIVE (Unbridled's Song); and last-out Federico Tesio S. winner MINER'S ESCAPE (Mineshaft).

The Preakness field will not include a starter, however, from Hall of Fame conditioner Nick Zito for just the fourth time since 1991. The Zito stable initially thought last weekend's Federico Tesio S. winner Miner's Escape (Mineshaft) would represent the barn. Just a Coincidence (Forestry), who had back-to-back wins at Gulfstream Park this winter, was also on the Preakness radar screen before a disappointing third in the Wood Memorial S. (G1).
"It looks like we will not make the Preakness at this stage of the game," Zito's longtime assistant Tim Poole said. "It is a little too close for the Tesio winner. He had not run in six weeks (March 14) and we want to give him time. Just a Coincidence has had a rough campaign. Nick is probably going to give him some time."

Other potential Preakness starters are FRIESAN FIRE (A.P. Indy), Lexington S. (G2) runner-up CONSERVATIVE (Unbridled's Song) and European invader SKY GATE (Arch), who has not started since breaking his maiden in December.

FYI @ Baltimore Track

Baltimore -- The focus now turns to the 134th running of the Preakness at Pimlico. Get ready for ridiculous banter about tighter turns (the turns are actually tighter at Churchill Downs) and the speed-biased track (no wire-to-wire wins in the Preakness since 1996).

Well, if you can get a horse future for no Triple Crown winner this year, take it. Mine that Bird won't win the next two, even if in it.

They just declared that Rachel Alexandria will run in preakness and probably will be the favorite.

The purchase of RA raises the chance of going to the Preakness but that is by no means confirmed. Hearing Jess Jackson speak on it, he seemed pretty reluctant to race her against the boys after what happened to Rags 2 Riches..

The connections of HULL (Holy Bull), the least-experienced prospect for the Preakness, decided on Monday to withdraw the colt from the Preakness field.

"When I committed to run in the race, I liked the way it was setting up," co-owner Barry Irwin of Team Valor International said. "I think the pace is going to be too hot. I don't like the way it's shaping up for our horse. It's going to be our horse's first time around two turns, and I just think there's too much speed in there and I'm not comfortable."

The unbeaten colt won the Derby Trial (G3) in his last start, only the third of his career. Irwin said they would run Hull in the Woody Stephens S. (G2) on the Belmont undercard on June 6.

"I'd like to be able to run him in the Preakness, but I don't want to screw the horse up," Irwin said. "He's only run three times, so I don't want to mess him up."

Preakness Contenders

These eight contenders have the best shot of winning the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2. Note that the horses are listed in alpabetical order and do not reflect our preference to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

  • Career earnings: $890,250
  • Last Start: Won Swale Stakes (G2)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 16/1
Comments: This colt missed the Kentucky Derby when he kicked himself in his stall and suffered a minor bone bruise…He set a track record winning the Swale but was DQ'd for interference in the stretch, which snapped a five race win streak…The colt comes into the Preakness with just the Swale under his belt as a three year old. He finished off his two-year-old campaign by winning the Delta Jackpot (G3) at Delta Downs... He swept Calder's Florida Stallion series, taking the Dr. Fager Stakes, the Affirmed Stakes and the In Reality Stakes...His mare Riveting Drama also has produced stakes winner Drama's Way and stakes placed Coffee Can…
Flying Private

  • Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
  • Jockey: Robby Albarado
  • Owner: Robert Baker & William Mack
  • Sire: Fusaichi Pegasus
  • Dam: Beautiful Treasure

  • Career earnings: $193,080
  • Last Start: 19th place in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 16/1
Comments: The D. W. Friesan Fire

  • Trainer: Larry Jones
  • Jockey: Gabriel Saez

  • Career earnings: $603,265
  • Last Start: 18th place in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 13/2
Comments: He grabbed quarter in his 18th place finish in the Derby and it was not expected he would return in two weeks for the Preakness, but here he is…The colt swept the three Derby preps at Fair Grounds and went off as the favorite in the Derby at a but less than 4/1…The colt has a nice pedigree, by A.P. Indy out of the Group 1 winner Bollinger…The colt figures to rebound with a much better effort at Pimlico.,..Trainer Larry Jones has the Derby runner up last year, the ill-fated Eight Belles…His lone Preakness starter was Hard Spun, who finished third in 2007…
General Quarters

  • Trainer: Thomas McCarthy
  • Jockey: Julian Leparoux
  • Owner: Thomas McCarthy
  • Sire: Sky Mesa
  • Dam: Ecology
  • Record: 12-3-3-1
  • Career earnings: $641,735
  • Last Start: 10th place in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 9/1
Comments: This colt would have been quite the Cinderella story had he won the Derby.,..He is trained by 75 year old Tom McCarthy, who runs a one horse stable and claimed the colt for just $20,000 in his debut…The colt had a tough trip on Derby Day and checked in tenth…The colt came into the Derby with solid credentials, winning the Sam F. Davis (G3) on dirt and the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) on polytrack…The former high school principal just needs Leparoux to get a cleaner trip and the colt should be able to improve off his Derby effort…
Hull

  • Trainer: Dale Romans
  • Jockey: Manuel Mena
  • Owner: Heillgbrodt Racing Stable
  • Sire: Holy Bull
  • Dam: Band Queen
  • Record: 3-3-0-0
  • Career earnings: $107,800
  • Last Start: Won Derby Trial (G3)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 14/1
Comments: The colt did not make his debut until February but has done nothing wrong in his three career starts, all wins, and each over a different racing strip…He broke his maiden in his debut at Fair Grounds, trounced a first level allowance field at Turfway Park over polytrack, and won his stakes debut in the Derby Trial (G3) at Churchill Downs…The colt has won his three starts by a combined 16 lengths and really has not been tested…Veteran trainer Dale Romans will give the leg up to Manuel Mena, his first Preakness mount…
Mine That Bird

  • Trainer: B.L. Wooley Jr.
  • Jockey: TBD
  • Owner: Double Eagle Ranch & Bueno Suerte

  • Career earnings: $1,791,581
  • Last Start: Won Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 9/2
Comments: The son of Birdstone pulled off the shocker in the Derby at 50/1 for trainer Chip Wooley, who went from obscurity to stardom in just over two minutes on the first Saturday of May…Originally a $9.500 purchase, the current connections paid $400,000 for the gelding after a productive campaign at Woodbine that included a win in the Grey Stakes (G3), the race that produced enough graded stakes earnings to get into the Derby…For the first time in over 50 years, the Derby winning jockey departs, as Calvin Borel will ride the Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra…
Muskett Man

  • Trainer: Derek Ryan
  • Jockey: Eibar Coa
  • Owner: Eric Fein & Vic Carlson
  • Sire: Yonaguska
  • Dam: Fortuesque
  • Record: 7-5-0-2
  • Career earnings: $772,600
  • Last Start: 3rd in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 6/1
Comments: If there is one horse flying under the radar coming into the Preakness, this is the guy…He was third in the Derby at 19/1 after winning the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and the Illinois Derby (G2) in his final two Derby preps…The colt was a bargain, purchased for just $15,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale…The colt is by Grade 1 winner Yonaguska out of the Fortunate Prospect mare Fortuesque, who was stakes placed and has produced five other winners…Jockey Eibar Coa will be riding in the Preakness for the first time although he is familiar with the track. He won the Pimlico Special aboard Eddington in 2006…
Papa Clem

  • Trainer: Gary Stute
  • Jockey: Rafael Bejarano

  • Career earnings: $890,940
  • Last Start: 4th in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 8/1
Comments: The colt was fourth in the Derby but was only beaten a nose and a head for the runner up spot…After running second behind Pioneerof the Nile and Friesen Fire, who won his first stake in the Arkansas Derby (G2( in his final Derby prep… The colt is by Smart Strike out of the Belong to Me mare Miss Houdini, a Grade 1 winner…The colt is trained by veteran horseman Gary Stute, the son of long time Southern California based Mel Stute…Bejarano has had two Preakness mounts in his career. Sun King finished fourth in 2005 and Sir Shackleton finished sixth in 2004…
Pioneerof The Nile

  • Trainer: Bob Baffert
  • Jockey: Garrett Gomez
  • Owner: Zayat Stables
  • Sire: Empire Maker
  • Dam: Star of Goshen
  • Record: 9-5-1-1
  • Career earnings: $1,634,200
  • Last Start: 2nd in Kentucky Derby (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 5/1
Comments: The Baffert trainee made his first start on real dirt in the Derby and he was a solid second while no match for the upset winner… Baffert will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame later this summer..The colt is by 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker out of the stakes winner Star of Goshen, who also dropped graded stakes placed Forefathers…Baffert has had nine Preakness starters in his career and has come away with the hardware four times: Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), Point Given (2001), and War Emblem (2002)…
Rachel Alexandra

  • Trainer: Steve Asmussen
  • Jockey: Calvin Borel

  • Record: 10-7-2-0
  • Career earnings: $958,354
  • Last Start: Won Kentucky Oaks (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 1/1
Comments: The last filly to win the Preakness was Nellie Morse in 1924, and Rachel Alexandra will be the first filly to run in the race since Excellent Meeting in 1999…A couple of very good fillies came up short, including Winning Colors, who was third in 19888 and Genuine Risk, who checked in second in 1980…The filly earned a higher Beyer Speed Figure (108) in her Kentucky Oaks win than Mine That Bird (105) earned in the Derby…She won that race by 20 ¼ lengths…Jockey Calvin Borel was so impressed he is jumping off the Derby winner to ride her in the Preakness…

The sire Even Score was a Grade 2 winner… The mare Ginger Ginger has dropped two other foals to race including stakes winner Tin Man Commin…

  • Career earnings: $512,084
  • Last Start: 4th in Blue Grass Stakes (G1)
  • Bodoglife.com Odds as of May 10: 25/1
Comments: This colt makes his third start in his three year old campaign, last seen in a fourth place finish in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1)…The colt has not seen the winner circle since last summer where he won the Mountaineer Juvenile in his second career outing…His career best speed figure came in his third place finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2) behind Friesen Fire and Papa Clem…He missed the runner up spot in that race by just a head…Trainer Albert Stall is a regular on the Kentucky and Louisiana circuits…

POST POSITION DRAW QUOTES
MINE THAT BIRD (PP #2; 6-1) – Chip Woolley, trainer: “We’ve got speed on both sides of us, speed on the inside and outside of us. That should clear away from us and leave us in a nice spot to coast down the front side and into the backstretch. It’s a good spot.”
“I like the fact that Big Drama is inside of me because he’ll move on and should leave me a little bit of a break there. “
RACHEL ALEXANDRA (PP #13; 8-5) – Scott Blasi, assistant trainer: “I was just speaking with Jess (Jackson) and Steve (Asmussen) and we’re very happy with it, being on the outside. You’ve got a long run to the first turn here.”
“With having a filly in the race, what you’re worried about is traffic and everything that can happen. In the Derby, when you break they all come together. I think it’s a very good spot for us.”
“I think the race will sort itself out before the first turn. We know that she does have good tactical speed and she should be able to get a good position going into the first turn.”
“I’d rather have than 13 than 1.”
BIG DRAMA (PP #1; 10-1) – David Fawkes, trainer: “I’m going to talk to the rider and talk to the owner in the morning and make a decision (about strategy). I guess you’d have to say we’re committed (to leave the starting gate quickly). We’re going to show speed anyway. That’s the nice thing – he doesn’t have to use himself to get position.”
“I wanted to be outside of (Rachel Alexandra), but I don’t think that’s an option.”
FLYING PRIVATE (PP #10; 50-1) – D. Wayne Lukas, trainer: “The 10 is OK. I wouldn’t have liked the 6,7,8,9. Bob’s horse has good speed inside of him, and mine doesn’t. Once they put them into the gate it will be a competitive race. The one thing I did not want was the 1-hole. I was getting a little nervous.”
FRIESAN FIRE (PP #5; 6-1) – Larry Jones, trainer: “They’ll (Big Drama and Rachel Alexandra) will have to go, so we should be able to get behind them and go.”
GENERAL QUARTERS (PP #8; 20-1) – Tom McCarthy, owner/trainer: “I loved it, absolutely loved it. I told my wife what number I’d get – and it was 8. That’s the same post he had in the Blue Grass (his only Grade I win).”
LUV GOV (PP #4; 50-1) – D. Wayne Lukas, trainer: “The 4 is OK – As long as it’s not the 1-hole. He comes from off the pace. It’s OK.”
MUSKET MAN (PP #3; 8-1) – Derek Ryan, trainer: “It doesn’t really matter much to us. We’d be happy with anything from 1-8. We just need a decent pace in front of us, and we should get one in this field.”
PAPA CLEM (PP #7; 12-1) – Gary Stute, trainer: “I thought the post was great, a perfect spot. Hopefully, 1 (Big Drama) and 13 (Rachel Alexandra) just go and clear and we’ll sit right behind them. It looks good on paper anyway. I thought they were a little generous with the odds again (12-1), but like (owner) Bo (Hirsch) said, I guess it’s better to be under the radar. I figured I got beat a nose and a head, and they’re 5-1 and 8-1 (Pioneerof the Nile and Musket Man) and I’m 12-1.”
PIONEEROF THE NILE (PP #9; 5-1) – Bob Baffert, trainer: “It’s very good. I wanted the 9, 10 or 11. We got the 9, which is very good.”
TAKE THE POINTS (PP #11; 30-1) – Don Lucarelli, co-owner: “We would have liked to have been a little more inside, like the 7-hole or inside of that. It looks like we’ll have to use some of our tactical speed at the beginning of the race and see where the horse goes from there.”
“If you’re a competitor, I guess you couldn’t have asked for a better post draw for Rachel Alexandra.”
“From that post position, I would think that we would like to probably sit somewhere like sixth or seventh maybe and hopefully be one of the first few if possible to pounce on the lead or take a shot at the lead coming into the stretch.”
“It’s going to be critical now for Edgar to position the horse over in a good spot.”
TERRAIN (PP #6; 30-1) – Al Stall Jr, trainer: “The speed on the inside, the chalk on the outside, our horse in the middle – I don’t think I could draw it up any better. I like the way things shook out.”
TONE IT DOWN (PP #12; 50-1) – Bill Komlo, trainer: “It’s interesting. I mean, you’ve got a lot of speed out there early, and I think that kind of favors us because our plan is to take back and come off the pace. It’s not (too far outside), not going a mile and three-sixteenths. You’ve got plenty of room to maneuver.”
