The USS Stark Incident

Copyright 2001 Jason Manning All Rights Reserved
At 8:00 PM on 17 March 1987, a Mirage F-1 fighter jet took off from Iraq's Shaibah military airport and headed south into the Persian Gulf, flying along the Saudi Arabian coast. An Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) plane, in the air over Saudi Arabia and manned by a joint American-Saudi crew, detected the aircraft. Aboard the USS Stark, a Perry-class frigate on duty in the gulf, radar operators picked up the Mirage when it was some 200 miles away; it was flying at 5,000 feet and traveling at 550 mph. Captain Glenn Brindel, 43, commander of the Stark, was not particularly alarmed. He knew it was fairly common for Iraqi and Iranian warplanes to fly over the gulf. Earlier in the day, Iraqi jets had fired missiles into a Cypriot tanker, disabling the vessel. But no American vessel had been attacked...

We are finishing something Iraq started.

The un had some 17 resolutions - Saddam did not comply with them. The US gave him 1 resolution and that was GULF WaR I. Saddam didn't comply, thus GULF WAR II. Hope the US doesn't out any more resolutions to neighboring countries as that would look to be a waste of time, and time is what everybody wants, right? Quality of time is what everybody wants, right?

How many resolutions has Israel violated?

Why haven't we attacked them?

The problem with you is that you accept the outcome as truth, and twist complete horseshit around and call it a premise.

Maybe you should start to think for yourself and question the whole fuking thing.

What could France and England have done in 1938 might I ask? Do you honestly think they could have invaded Germany and done anything but taste defeat? A better question is if the status quo had continued in Iraq, what exactly would be happening today? My guess is not much. Sure Saddam would still be in power and people living in fear, but people there live in fear now. There are certainly some points that can be taken as positive, but this is a losing point for conservatives. Few in the world think things would be measurably different for the US or much of the world if the US would have just left things alone. I take that back, things would have been much different because at least Afghanistan might be stable and the beacon of democracy the administration wants Iraq to be so badly. But why quibble with that point? The bottom line is the results are we still have terrorist alerts all the time and we ran over two poorly organized armies in mismatch battles. This is what we are supposed to give kudos for and re-elect this guy as gratitude?

This is a 20 year war.Like it or not.

Be thankful we have terror alerts now.As I recall nobody ever heard of such a thing on 9/10.Maybe if we did 9/11 would not have happned.
Also maybe a little prevention before like taking OBL when he was practically handed to us.Or bombing the shit out of his camps when we new he was there.
My original point was if the sanctions to Germany were strictly enforced by the old phoney UN, League of Nations, WW2 never would have happned.

By the way WB we know now about Iraq and the incompetence of the CIA because we did go there.
According to the 9/11 commision Bush was one of the critical questioners on the purpose for going there.

JP: you cannot seriously take an event dated 1987 and use it as justification for the current war. To say that invading Iraq was not preemptive is to contradict what the warmongers themselves have said repeatedly, what they wrote in the National Security Strategy of 2002, what they proposed to the UN in their own not-passed-so-therefore-violated resolution, and what the minions have been pushing for since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Welcome back x,

I'm not trying to stick up for war mongerers, I don't know of any mongerers, to begin with. Something that happened in 1987, when it comes to an act of war, doesn't have any statue of limitations.

Now lets get back to your week at the cottage!

Well, then, JP, you have lost me. You of course recall that in 1987 Iraq and the US were de facto allies and that all crimes committed by Saddam, including his mass murder of the Kurds in '88, were well known by the Americans and yet he was still supported? So how could any incidents of that time go on to lend support to the idea that the US is simply enacting vengeance and not engaging in a preemptive war?

As for the week away, I am sure that you would be disappointed. We didn't fish or hunt anything, forgot entirely to smash beer cans against our foreheads, and only had one en masse tickle fight. Apologies.

x,

foriegn relations at that time were much like, I suppose, an en masse tickle fight. But rather than go back that far and teach you about foriegn relations I'll bring it more up to pre 9/11.

Just days before 9/11 Iraq was still lobbing anti aircraft missle at US aircraft patrolling the no fly zone.
