Quinnipiac: McCain Collapses in Key Swing States

A combination of factors -- the first presidential debate, Gov. Sarah Palin's sagging favorability and more voter confidence in Sen. Barack Obama's ability to handle the economy -- are propelling Obama to wider likely voter leads over Sen. John McCain in three key swing states, according to new Quinnipiac polls.

Florida
: Obama 51%, McCain 43%

Ohio
: Obama 50%, McCain 42%

Pennsylvania
: Obama 54%, McCain 39%

Said pollster Peter Brown: "It is difficult to find a modern competitive presidential race that has swung so dramatically, so quickly and so sharply this late in the campaign. In the last 20 days, Sen. Barack Obama has gone from seven points down to eight points up in Florida, while widening his leads to eight points in Ohio and 15 points in Pennsylvania."

Pew Research: Obama Surges in National Survey
Sen. Barack Obama has achieved "a significant lead" over Sen. John McCain in the days following the first presidential debate, according to the latest Pew Research poll.

Obama leads McCain by seven points, 49% to 42%, among registered voters. The race was virtually even in mid-September and early August.

Three key factors:

* More voters rate Obama's performance in last Friday's debate as excellent or good than say the same about McCain's (72% vs. 59%)
* The electorate continues to have much more confidence in Obama than McCain to deal with the financial crisis (51% to 33%).
* Opinions about Sarah Palin have become increasingly negative, with a majority of the public (51%) now saying that the Alaska governor is not qualified to become president.

Obama did look brilliant in blaming everything on Bush.

Obama has a bailout bounce, the party of the sitting President gets hurt when the economic news is bad.

You see, people actually think the POTUS micro manages "the worldwide" economy, they even think he controls the "worldwide" price of oil.

that's brilliance at work :missingte:missingte:missingte:missingte:missingte

Bailout bounce or not...McCain needs to bring this race back to a few points.

Playing catch up this late in the game isn't a great thing because the map expands (even on a temporary basis). Five weeks is a ton of time but when the RNC is forced to go up in states like Indiana (I think I read it's been two decades since they've done this...could be wrong) it spreads your resources thinner than they should be.

Some people support candidates and parties on ideological
principles, and not poll numbers.

The reason our economy is in such bad shape is because of the political correctness and pandering for votes by Dems and Repubs, but mostly Dems. We cant give away houses to people the cant afford them. Everyone cant get a line of credit. Democrats want to further socialize the economy. People like you are too dumb to see this.

3PEET, overcoming the Deep South racism remains a pertinent factor in the Florida vote.

But that could well be offset by the absolute astonishment of the average Florida voter when presented with Sarah Palin live and in color.

She's done one notable event in Florida so far - at a heavily Republican senior retirement community north of Orlando. But I'll be surprised if she is exposed much more than that down here.

The Repubs are relying on the combination of Deep South racism and general fear that if McCain is not elected then Al Queda will detonate a nuke inside Disneyworld.

and the Democrats are relying on the racist black vote to vote 95% for their black man, otherwise it's the white guy in a landslide

Willie I usually agree with you on many things but I dont think I can agree with you on this one. No black population will win Obama the election. Blacks are only 17% of the population and how many of them are actually registered to vote.

I might have embellished just a tad, but I did so to emphasize my counter point to the "racism argument"

But in reality, if the GOP had a mere 33% of the black vote, the Democrats would not have won any national election since blacks were entitled to vote. The Democrats know this, thus they fight like hell to keep their boys in line, and that's a sad truth.

They attack black conservatives as much as they are doing Sarah Palin.

you guys are delusional. keep supporting sarah palin.

This VP debate will even the score. The mainstream media have been dissing Palin ever since she came out of Alaska like a lightning bolt from the sky.

The people will see the real Sarah tommorrow night, she'll carve up poor old Joe like she used to field dress moose.

Even Keith Overbite & Chris Matthews will have to admit Sarah stripped Biden of whiskers & hope.

How do you carve up someone without the facts? And as we know facts are not Palin's strong suit

You shouldn't even watch the debate tomorrow night, your mind is already made up who will win it.

BTW, see if she can nail down anything, anything at all specific.......In the words of George Sr. "not gonna happen, not gonna happen".

We'd love to have the black voters carry the water, but in the state of Florida, over 1/3 of voter-age blacks are not permitted to vote due to archaic laws restricting convicted felons from voting.

That leaves us with about 400,000 black voters out of what should be about 6 million votes statewide in the upcoming general election.

Yeah, but you know that of those "lost" votes, 99% of them are too lazy to get off their asses and actually do it (vote). So really, the loss is negligible. Better yet, nigligible. Same goes for the ones that are eligible. They aren't going to turn out in record numbers like some of you suggest. A leopard can't change its spots.
To your other point, the right to vote is something justifiably lost when one is convicted of a felony. Sorry, but that makes sense.
