[h=2]Pope demands 'legitimate redistribution' of wealth[/h]By NICOLE WINFIELD VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis called Friday for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new spirit of generosity to help curb the "economy of exclusion" that is taking hold today.
Francis made the appeal during a speech to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the heads of major U.N. agencies who met in Rome this week.

Latin America's first pope has frequently lashed out at the injustices of capitalism and the global economic system that excludes so much of humanity, though his predecessors have voiced similar concerns.
On Friday, Francis called for the United Nations to promote a "worldwide ethical mobilization" of solidarity with the poor in a new spirit of generosity.

He said a more equal form of economic progress can be had through "the legitimate redistribution of economic benefits by the state, as well as indispensable cooperation between the private sector and civil society."
Francis voiced a similar message to the World Economic Forum in January and in his apostolic exhortation "The Joy of the Gospel." That document, which denounced trickle-down economic theories as unproven and naive, provoked accusations in the U.S. that he was a Marxist.

Francis urged the U.N. to promote development goals that attack the root causes of poverty and hunger, protect the environment and ensure dignified labor for all.

"Specifically, this involves challenging all forms of injustices and resisting the economy of exclusion, the throwaway culture and the culture of death which nowadays sadly risk becoming passively accepted," he said.

Friday's audience came just days after the Holy See was battered in a second round of grilling by a U.N. committee over its record of handling priestly sex abuse. Neither the pope nor Ban spoke of the issue, but Francis referred to another topic at the U.N. hearings: the church's opposition to abortion. He called for respect for life "from conception to natural death" and his denunciation of the "culture of death" echoed previous papal exhortations against abortion.

During the meeting, Ban invited Francis to speak to the United Nations. The Vatican hasn't confirmed any such trip, but Francis is widely expected to visit the U.S. in September 2015 to participate in a church meeting on families in Philadelphia, making a U.N. stop then likely.

What is exactly is "legitimate redistribution of wealth"?

Property confiscation is theft.

You know we are entering the End Times when the Catholic Church is infested with sodomites and socialists.

Remember...the good ol' days?

WTF is an "economy of exclusion:?

a rising tide raises all boats, and the poorest people suffer the most when we have the economic malaise we have which was caused by the redistribution policies

just another guy thinking there's an easy answer, the path of least resistance from a masses point of view

what they're trying to fix with such policies is getting worse

when the economy was growing, more doors were opening for more people

when will this harsh reality penetrate thick sculls?

Trickle down economics is the dumbest theory in the history of economics, but that does not mean we need to denounce capitalism. The best economic system is one with a mixture of government and capitalists. Not some false dichotomy.

Free market capitalism is the voluntary exchange of goods and services and no economic system in the history of mankind has lifted more people out of poverty than free market economics.

What's so "immoral" about that?

I guess it's "immoral" for anyone who wants everything handed to them on a silver platter, and for idiots who consistently cannot get ahead because they insist on taking short cuts.

You show me a 'problem' in today's society and I'll show you a politician or bureaucrat who created it.

The disintegration of the black family, a vicious and unsolvable cycle of poverty - look no further than LBJ's "Great Society"

What about dictators in foreign countries who use their power to suppress and steal the people's wealth - STOP THE FOREIGN AID!

How about Gen Xers who, unlike their parents and grandparents, have massive student debt and I can't seem to get ahead or save anything anymore" - thank you Keynesian economics!

Health care is too expensive? Another inflationary socially-engineered train wreck brought to you by those who believe "health care is a human right" so long as someone else is paying for it.

But hey... nothing that "Spread the wealth around, baby!!!" won't solve, right?

More Tyranny! That'll fix it!

It is impossible to determine the wealth of Catholic church.

The Vatican alone is estimated to be worth 10 to 15 billion.

When the Pope gives away 90% of the churches wealth to the poor, then and only then will I pay attention to what he has to say.

Well, if I were the pope and I really wanted something to get accomplished the first organization I'd plea to would be the UN ;-)

Seriously though, does the pope dwell in a world so insulated from reality that he believes this nonsense? Or that the UN is a force for good in the world? Pope Francis is delusional. That's sad.

The new "social justice" pope also believes in the pseudo-science cult movement known as "global warming"

Maybe the Vatican should just print unlimited amounts of money - problem solved.

Or...

How about Venezuela - lots of "social justice" going on there. Venezuela has huge oil reserves and their people are running out of toilet paper.

It reminds me of my one and only trip to Cuba (DO NOT EVER GO TO CUBA - EVEN AS A TOURIST!), the air-conditioning in our room broke and the staff didn't have the parts to fix it...and that was the end of that - no air-conditioning until we were back in the airport escaping that socialist hell-hole.

More failed central planning and wealth confiscation - what a great 'system' for alleviating poverty and human progress!

Thanks, Pope! :neenee:

Joe, I think Cuba is a perfect example of what he is talking about. Fidel is one of the richest men in the world and the people don't have squat. Next time you are there stay at Hotel Parque Central in Old Havana. Great experience.

There is definitely a difference in comparison between people who work hard to acquire wealth and those who sit on their ass and think they deserve to collect.......

and dictators who pillage their own people and keep them in poverty.

But again, is this pope foolish enough to believe that he can appeal to the GOOD sense of BAD people?

Agree. The Catholic Church and the Vatican lecturing about wealth re-distribution is about as hypocritical as it gets.

If every so called poor person was given 100K by the government how much money to you think they would have in 3 years? More than 100k, less that 100k or nothing? you got that right - so are we supposed to keep given them 100K every few years?

That's the same as redistributing the money to the state lottery commissions and the tobacco companies :)

I'll take that a step further, if you gave every "poor" person $1,000,000, 75% of them would be broke within 3 years.

Rich people have rich habits, poor people have poor habits.

OWS? I'll lay some solid odds

Do you think these people have any idea how many people have created amazing lives for themselves and their families starting from scratch?

Do you think these people have any idea what real poverty is throughout the world and throughout mankind before this incredible country was established?

I gotta go with no fucking way
