This is the most overrated game of chance where skill and sharpness is very over hyped. The poker players on tv are just names. I can get local amateurs in my area that will beat these guys and the pros will beat them sometimes. Boys the game is all luck and who has better cards wins , not skill!!! Bluffing will take you so far, it is all how the cards are dealt. There is no such thing as a super sharp in poker. This is not card counting like in blackjack where you have to be sharp as a blade.

Good Luck

JJ well I have noticed after playing alot at partypoker that alot of it is "bluffing" I would be some of the players bluff 80% of the time and win that way

JJ,
You're misguided. Sure it takes luck to snag a big tourney. But it takes SKILL and DISCIPLNE to make a living at it. There's a reason why the cream always rises to the top, and a few lucky guys join them. After working the WSOP this year, there's no doubt in my mind that the guys that have been around a while have a SKILL!

Plus you're missing the biggest advantage of all...

YOU DON'T PLAY THE HOUSE...you look for someone not as sharp as you...A SUCKER! Which, btw, can be found at MajorWager.com

Hey Louie you bailed me out about a month ago with a 2 team reverse, I need another one. I am in the hole with one of my sharks.

Stock market requires way more skill than poker. They are not in the same leauge and the stock guys for the most part are brighter.

Cards being dealt is pure luck only. Some of you guys are reading to many books on how to beat the house and I got news for you, it ain't going to happen.

Who is this guy Fishhead, I really believe I can sell him the Brooklyn Bridge!!

JJ,
As I said, the house is not your opponent.

Now stop making yourself look bad and go bet Min/CWS under, LA/AZ under, Utah/Cal over.

The major skill in poker comes from knowing your opponents and their idiosyncracies. I once saw a pot limit omaha game in Finland in which there was a pot of about $2500, and by the river the board showed 5 different valued cards, with 3 hearts, so an Ace flush would be the nuts. One guy with lots of chips in front of him bet $1500. Two guys folded and the last guy went all in for $1800 (ie. he called the $1500 and raised another $300). The first guy thought a while, showed his king flush and folded. Then the other guy laughed and turned over his Ace of hearts with three non-hearts. It was a bluff.

Now you could call that luck if you want. I call it skill.

I have been in games and have no clue what I am doing and have taken some big pots. It is all luck boys. Observation is somewhat important but that in my book is not skill.

Judge if I played you, some days you would win and others I would win.

Poker tournaments are mainly won by new people all the time because it is pot luck.

JJ,if you played me,you are correct. If you played against pros, you would have no chance over the long haul.

Poker involves skill I agree. A few years back i had a good friend who owned a bar. After hours, 4-8 AM often a table of us would get together and play 3-4 mornings a week. No stars, no pros, but we know the game. Over the course of a couple years it would just cycle. It seemed it all evened out over time. There were some odds that would sit in occasionaly and the skill showed, because some were very bad & then some were very good. We did not play limits either. The good thing about playing with friends, we could always owe and make payments.

It all evens out in time. I could play Johnny Chan and in the long run it would be even.

This is not like card counting in blackjack where the players has an edge.

There is no edge in this game other than bluffing which runs out eventually.

JJ, with all due respect I think you're out of your element of expertise on this subject. Although I do agree that luck of the cards is a factor in poker, it still requires a big element of skill and patience in order to win over time.

A sharp player has the patience to study and absorb the mannerisms of the players around him in hopes of having an edge as some point in a hand later in the game, a sharp player knows proper money(chip) management and will at times throw away a solid hand when he senses he may be entering a trap. These are all atributes of a strong Sharp player, I do not believe that a novice or semi skilled player with LUCK stands a chance of turning a profit over the long haul against players of this nature. In a small sampling they may win a little but the same could be said with any form of gambling that luck may get you ahead for a while.

You`re absoutely right. No matter what the subject he has no clue! I`m sure he`s paid a small sum by Shrink just to agitate & promote discussions, no matter how idiotic. And we like fools fall for it. If no one paid this dolt any attention he would dry up. A good example of skill in Poker comes from having played thousands of hrs while in the service. No matter where I went all over the world, while playing in the NCO Clubs for example if there was core group of say 40 men playing on a weekly basis, there was always maybe 3-5 guys big winners. EVERY wk the others went back and forth. Not luck OR coincidence! The best won!
