Please help - need feedback from locals

I had a problem last night with my local.

I usually make plays for a unit/game. I placed 4 unit wager (my biggest this year) on Notre Dame.

Anyways, I won the wager ... or so I thought.

Today, my local says that I played Stanford and that means I have to take a 8.4 unit hit

I have no recourse cause I can't prove anything. He did "offer" to cancel the play, but that still means a 4 unit hit.

The question I need to ask is:

How often do other people have this problem?

Is it this guy, or is this normal when dealing with locals?

I think many locals record their calls. At least the ones I have used. Can't hurt to ask.

Ask if he taped the call, most do. He probably was willing to void the play because you are a good customer, take that if that is all you can get.

Very tough luck, tuff break brother...picking a winner is hard enough to do. Always repeat your plays. Sorry man.

If my locals did not use a recording, I would. The local guys here always give the benefit of doubt as long as you are not a shot taker or had prior bad issues.

All of my calls are recorded for this reason. We also read back every play you make-if yours do not, ask for a read back after you place your wages. I doubt that yours does not record the calls unless he is small and operating out of a corner tap room.
Good luck with it!

With the majority of anybody that is good and honorable, the first time it is a no bet. After that the customer is told that in the future you get on strike and not three. You plays should be read back twice, once when taken and then once again when conversation consumated. If you have trouble again , look for another out. I am surprised your man did not mention it to you when calling. It was probably his only play on stanford, the whole world was on ND,that is if you really did play stanford and not ND. Thanks B.R.

I would be wary of a local who doesn't record his calls. He can always "let you off the hook" and cancel the bet but what good is that for the player if he won? Maybe he only records them when it's in his favor if you know what I mean. Either way keep looking would be my advice, you need a record of what you wagered. Losing out on a 4 unit play is completely unacceptable.

For less than $50 at Radio Shack you can buy all the technology you need to record the calls yourself. Not sure what your local will think of you recording, but you sure won't have any more misunderstandings.

I use to use a lot of old school local. We never taped for the evidence, but seldom hada problem. My favorite bookie tried to pay me to much once and I showed him my plays and he grade a lose a winner. From that point on he gave me the benifit of the doubt. New higher tech group working now that I don't know well. If I was using them for nickols my recorder would be on. Another time he got the benifit one time and I got it the next. I always prefered money chang hands because a bet was made. I had to quit with my favorite locals, they are all good friends and I was giving them soft so I said I can find the same # offshore and just have a drink and see how you week went.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. FYI, my local doesn't record anything, and I have had one problem in 3 years.

UPDATE:

After the dispute that we had this afternoon, my local calls me back at 8:20 pm because I didn't call him for the 4:00 pm games and was going to miss the night game because I had no intention of using him again. Anyways, I told him that "I was done" when he called.

He didn't understand if I was done for the day, or done FOREVER, so he tried to talk about the upcoming bowl season, and when I repeated that I was done, he understood, he had lost a customer. That is when he said that he could have made a mistake and that he wanted me to stay with him.

The bottom line is, I know for sure that I played Notre Dame and I have this feeling that he's not being honest here.

This is how I found out about the mix-up. Tell me if you think it smells fishy. I am in this neighborhood bar and my local walks in. My local is more of an agent than a full book. Anyways, he says to me, "Did you throw your TV out the window last night?" and I say, "No, why?" and he goes, "Stanford didn't even show up"

Anyways, for him to bring up THAT game was fishy, IMO - I made 5-6 plays yesterday, and I had no problem with any of the other plays.

Regardless, I think I need to find another book, or simply stick to offshore. I like locals because my local doesn't do basketball or hockey (not enough volume) and that keeps me from blowing my weekend winnings on TV games without any clue on capping and doesn't allow me to chase football losses with square NBA plays.

Any thoughts?

I think you are doing the right thing by moving on, it does all sound fishy to me. Have no idea why a book wouldn't record the plays until the figure is settled every week. As you say for him to mention the specific play out of the 5 or 6 you bet is also odd. Usually your gut instinct is the proper move. Good luck Cincy, we have a whole lot of reputable books up top if you need one.

QUOTE.........."My local CALLED me at 8:20, because i didnt call him for the 4:00pm games"

1. books dont call customers and ask them why they didnt make any wagers.

2. if he doesnt record all wagers then he is stupid, it protects HIM AND YOU......

3. a good bookmaker will give a customer the benefit of doubt, if it cant be proved otherwise........

tell your local to go f*ck himself...........and go get a real bookmaker.....

Wrong.

This is almost never a good solution. Karma will come back to bite you in the keester sure as shit.

If you have a problem with your local then just warn your friends not to deal with him and move along.

If he's screwing people, he'll get his in the end.

I would say you're doing the right thing by moving on. He doesn't sound very professional (calling on players for not making plays, not recording messages/conversations, not giving the player the benefit of the doubt, etc.). Like you said there are plenty of other options out there that will treat you better so moving on is the smart move.
good luck!
