Please explain steam.

I posed this question in the sportbet forum, but nobody replied. I have a general idea that betting steam is betting a line that is moving fast, and getting to it before the move. I think that the reason would be that some stupid tout released it as a play, so the masses are all flocking to it at the same time. Why is betting this line almost considered cheating by the books? My feeling is that any posted line is available to be hammered at any time by anyone up to the book's established limits. And why would it even be necessarily advantageous to the player to bet such a line anyway?

Ill,

When a player is accused of betting steam, they usually respond with these type of answers:

"What do you mean, STEAM?"

"What screen are you talking about, Don Best? Whos that?"

and the biggest laugher of all..."Who's Billy Walters?"

I'm ignorant, but I personally have no idea who Billy Walters is. I'm aware of Don Best, although I don't know if he's a real person or just the name of the site. Again, why does it mean that the bettor has an advantage, just because the line is moving?

Very arguable as to what to do with it Illini. I doubt you would be ahead much just by following it or fading it from my experience playing around. (straight betting)

Steam...? I hope this explanation helps, guys...

To all regarding "steam" as a player... This may have been covered by a previous poster, however, I will tell you what our firm watches closely. I will take notice when a player bets 2k and higher into my store in the following manner and I believe this will get the attention of all of us "deamon" sportsbooks...

A guy is getting the information or is very close to the "originating" source of a major line move. In example, he or she will make a wager on our internet site of substantial size, I get a red indicator light that flashes if I am watching his plays, then, say 10 seconds later the big stores and helmsmen start moving this same line against my current position that I just took. That pisses a book off because he is not getting the perceived "true odds", a bet taken at a "good" line at 11-10 odds, on his money that he originally got when the bet was placed... because now the line is 1 to 2 points different. Mathematically, the "sharp" just got the best of my sportsbook. This opens my store up to be beat by the "sharp" or worse "middled" if the sharp decides to come back at me on the other side. This is huge in baskets... especially in the NBA. I give a ****, I care but not as much, about college because the lines are'nt as tight as in the NBA.

So see, all I do is monitor a "sharp" that is getting information a little too fast for my liking and I weed him out. You pay him his winnings for sure... but you weed him out. Oh, and when I say "weed" him, I don't mean cut him off... I want this information for my own personal gain so I just cut his limits back. This keeps him from looking so hard at my store for "easy money" and I get to bets his plays at other shops, mostly stateside locals that are not so sharp.

This is in no way a complete explanation but I think it will help some of the new guys...

Respectfully,

This is just a books way of copping out and kicking a player out and or revoking bonuses. Shiitt books do this often, you wont see Pinny, Oly, Cris, etc do this..

Don't kid yourself Noreaga, Pinny does it all the time... If you don't think Henry & Co. don't care about the "sharps" you are living on a different planet... Gimme a break!

:WTF:

Respectfully... a different perspective,

Pinny will move on steam...but they will move on their steam more often than not whereas most sh!t books will move because someone else's line moved first.

It's hard for anyone to leave a stale number up there too long and stay in this business for a long time IMO. You either move or get buried more often than not.

I never heard of Pinnacle or Cris or Oly giving people the boot. Maybe they have.

Noreaga... you are correct. Its probably my fault in miscommunication... this typing and all. Pinny, nor my book, will boot you... we simply put the collars on the internet wagering. If you are playing at 2-10k per game you will be requested to call in your plays over the 800 #'s. This way when you request the odds on certain games it simply takes a little longer and the line may adjust accordingly, we look at the screens lighting up, and you get a little different number than the "square" public. Its not dishonest... its just smart business from our end. Its not easy. You can lose your a$$... millions!!! Just think about the shops that have gotten destroyed and folded in the past four years???

Take your eyes off the ball for ten seconds and you get phuk'd... Sad, but so true... :WTF:
