Playoff Expansion?

That is what the Big 12-2 is pushing. TCU HC Gary Patterson, whose idea's border on the insane, is in favor of eliminating the Conference Championship Games and just picking a team to represent the conference. The problem with that is obvious. What happens if two teams from the legitimate Power 5 conferences (all but the Big 12-2) end up with an identical record and also have NOT played each other? I have never seen a HC who is so afraid to add a couple of teams and have a CC game as Patterson.

If the playoffs are expanded to 8 teams, the best scenario is to start the playoffs when the bowl season starts, around the 20th of December. That still gives the winners plenty of time to prepare for the Semi's to be played on the 31st or 1st, as they are now. Still, that is a longshot at this point, because the 4 right teams made it last season. We will need a couple of years where there is a lot of controversy to get the ball rolling for playoff expansion.

It's a matter of time before it goes to 8... Too much money to pass over...

Boise State would sure love an 8 team playoff. They would be in it every other year.

Two things that should have happened a few years ago. When the Big 12 added WV and TCU they should have added two more teams right then and there to make it 12. And the NCAA should have made it an 8 team playoff from the beginning to make sure every conference and team has a chance to get involved in the NC process. They both missed the boat with their decisions.

ESPN has all of the power here. It is their contract that the NCAA is stuck with. To expand the playoffs to 8 games, ESPN will have to be convinced that more money can be made. All kinds of logistics will have to be worked out including where will the first round games be played, will the first round losers be eligible for other bowl games, when will the first round start, and all kinds of other problems. It is not nearly as simple as just adding 4 teams to the playoffs. This is why many people think that there will be no change until the current contract runs out. So far, all I have heard is Big 12-2 fans and the non-power 5 schools wanting an expansion, so they are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. No one has come up with a realistic answer to the problems that I pose. Stay tuned...

Louisville would definitely have been acceptable. The thing I'm curious about with Louisville is if they can they can sustain the level of football that they've shown the last few years. They heavily recruit the Miami area, and they've been able to pull some very good blue chip recruits out of there. But I think the reason they and FSU have been able to get the players they have is because the Miami football program is way down, with all of it's NCAA problems and probation, coaching changes it's really hurt them. And these other schools have been able to take advantage of it. It played a big part in why Louisville had so many players get drafted by the NFL this season, and many of those players were Florida players. If Miami ever pulls themselves up off the floor and becomes a power program again, I think Louisville's recruiting will dry up in that area.

It seems it cant expand to 8 under current set up, unless they ax ccg's and oocg's. 10,12, 14 team conferences make it hard to set a standard guideline. Super conferences and an all conference schedule Might be the only realistic option to get there.

I can easily see the creation of 4 "Super" Conferences of 16 teams. The Big 12 would be dissolved. Texas, T-Tech, Ou and Okie State could go to the Pac 12. Notre Dame and West Virginia go to the ACC. the Big 10 has it's choice of the two Kansas teams plus Iowa State. The SEC gets it's choice of AAC teams. What surprises me is that the Big 12 an BYU are not really talking. If they were close, the Big 12 would pickup BYU and Cincinnati and that is the end of the "Super Conference" talk. If "Super Conferences" ever came about, the two big losers would be the Big 12 and BYU.
