If your idea of a casino experience is putting on jeans and a sweatshirt to go feed nickels into a slot machine and chow down at the buffet, Avery Cardoza's Player magazine is not for you.
But if you fancy classic images of James Bond sitting in a high-limit baccarat pit, dressed in a tuxedo with an ice-cold martini near his hand, you may want to give this new magazine a read.
"We're celebrating the lifestyle of gambling," Cardoza said in a phone interview from his New York office. "You go to a casino, you drink, you smoke, you dress up nice, you eat out."
This edgy bi-monthly publication is geared toward men age 25 to 44, though women should enjoy it, too, said Cardoza, who became a gambling publisher about 20 years ago after Las Vegas casinos told him they no longer wanted his business, thus ending his career as a professional blackjack player.
Each issue will offer gambling tips on blackjack, craps, slots, poker and sports betting. It also will offer advice on what liquor to order, which cigar to puff while you rake in the chips and how to look your best while you do it. Articles about restaurants, lounges, nightclubs and other nongaming attractions are part of the package.
A.C. to be featured in the future
The Seven Deadly Sins will be a regular feature, telling players how what's bad for you can be good and vice versa, Cardoza said. The "gluttony" page might be a food review; the "vanity" page, a fashion hint; the "greed" page, a gambling anecdote, and so on.
Although the first issue focuses on action in Las Vegas, Atlantic City will be featured in the future. Look for a spread on the Borgata Babes, the cocktail waitresses at the Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa, in the next issue.
Player isn't for the bus-riding, coupon-clipping gambler. It's designed for those who want to spend their discretionary income with panache, Cardoza says.
