Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1040 Friday afternoon.
On if he worries about the highly-valued prospect not dominating at these prospect tournaments and if he ‘demands’ to see the Vancouver Canucks’ Bo Horvat, as an example, dominate in these situations:
“No. Because I’ll use a player that made the NHL as an 18-year-old and he was a second round pick – Patrice Bergeron. I was there. I watched him all through Boston’s camp. I watched him play in junior. I mean, I watched this kid grow up as a player. And he never dominated anything. But if you knew how to evaluate hockey players, you could see great faceoff player. Awesome presence on the penalty kill. Really good forechecker. Excellent in his own zone. Wasn’t intimated by matchup situations. So while he maybe didn’t dominate and numbers weren’t his thing, he dominated a lot of other things. And I think Bo will be similar to that. But what you want to see from Bo is aggressive forecheck, domination with the puck. Ability to get to the net. Those are the things that are his personality and really what he’s good at. And if he does that, then you know you’ve got a player.”

As nerdy as he is, Peirre McGuire knows the game as well as anyone.

Thinks Bo Horvat the Canucks youngster will be as good as Bergereon.

Im gonna keep one eye on this kid throughout the season.

Shit...I should have keeped this info privy till after our fantasy draft. :)

I think that Pierre and his superlatives are about as useful as a poopy-flavoured lollypop. I'm really not sure if I've ever heard anything that was actually insightful come out of his mouth.

I went to the Canucks/Oilers prospects game Friday night and got a chance to watch Horvat in person... The first period was pretty crappy while all the players skated some of the rust off, but from the 2nd period on it was pretty obvious Horvat was the best player on the ice. Not a flashy/big points player at all, but pretty much everything McGuire describes above.. Was the main penalty killer, took all the important face-offs, defensive zone coverage was fantastic, and made some nice little passes in the offensive zone. Also looks like a born leader out there, I would put money on him being their next Captain after Henrik retires. Haha Bushay I don't think Bo is the type of player that will win you hockey pools, not in the near future anyways.. But he is one of those all around guys that are incredibly important to winning cups... That being said I don't think he will make the team this year unless he has an incredible training camp, the second and third line center spots will go to Bonino and Vey, they may have to move Horvat to 3rd line winger if he forces them to keep him around.

Bushay: Such a angle shot on letting the 'cat out of the bag' with Horvat. I’m wondering what offensive minded, fantasy stats driven, sleepers you’ve got hiding away in the sock drawer. I know your arsenal of NHL informants goes well beyond Pierre McGuire. Thanks for the link regardless. I never heard of him before.

However I’m well into my own personal training camp, of sorts, in preparing for another season and learning all the names of potential Calder Trophy candidates. Really looking forward to a great season and thanking heaven it’s not a lock out year.

This guy’s impression, (Hershey Bear goalie, David Leggio), is classic. Only thing missing is, “Go have some fun out there”.

Vancouver fan: I caught myself salivating when I read, "I went to the Nucks/Oil prospects game Friday night.” Thanks for the woody.

This is the kind of local feedback that made/makes this place so good over the years.

Thanks VF

That was pretty funny.

Vic, a lot of people outside of Vancouver have probably forgotten about this but Horvat was drafted 9th overall in 2013 with the Devils pick when the Canucks pulled a shocker at the draft and traded Cory Schneider to NJ right before the Devils pick... It wasn't exactly the most popular trade in Canucks history so nothing like a little extra added pressure on the kid! He was fresh off an appearance in the Memorial Cup where he was an absolute beast for London so I can't blame Gillis for picking him... Eventually he will make Canuck fans forget Schneider, but there are still people pissed off about that one.
