The Alegria Center for the Arts Group was born in the spirit of integrating the development of Costa Rican art and artistic expressions—establishing a dialog with artists, art dealers and galleries. The purpose and object for the Center is to support and stimulate art activities, initiatives and thoughtful discussion to further the native art and culture of Costa Rica.
In honor of our rich history of beautiful nature and landscape art and photography, we have introduced our inaugural Landscape Photography Contest to foster this form of artistic expression which has been such a dominant theme in Costa Rican. The winner of this important inaugural contest will be judged on the photograph that best captures the dramatic views of the humid Central Valley. This winning photograph will capture and depict clear skies and summer colors, and the rich spaces in which the vernacular, architecture and history of the colonial past occupy an outstanding place.
The photography must capture the drama of the humid Costa Rican landscape. The submissions should explore, in photographic images, the unique aspects of this beautiful region including its flora and fauna, atmospheric phenomena and climatic conditions, dense fogs, evenings and mornings of clouds and drizzles—any of these natural aspects which provide such a wealth of potential for artistic expression and examination.
RULES OF THE CONTEST:
1. The topic of the works must be that of the humid national landscape in its multiple manifestations.
2. Both Costa Rican and foreign resident artists may participate, with a maximum of three pieces per participant.
3. The pieces may be submitted in either color or black and white photography in the analog and digital categories, subject to proper quality and condition. The organization of the photos and their presentation for the exhibition will be done depending on these categories.
4. The photos must have a minimum size of 24.5cm x 28cm and a maximum of 130cm x 130cm. Submissions must be noted for any work that is in sections or segments that together form a unit.
5. The work must be unpublished and produced during the year 2008 or 2009.
6. The contestant must have participated in at least two collective exhibitions.
7. The participant must present each work with a specified reference card, a summary resume (maximum two pages) and a personal written commentary about each photograph describing the subject matter and technical details about the photographic process used in its production.
8. The selection of the work will be done by a jury, composed by natives and/or foreigners of recognized authority in photography and the arts.
9. The work must be presented ready, with all the necessary attachments for the exhibition.
10. The expense of sending submissions and for their return will be the responsibility of the photographer.
