Phil Mickelson always pays his debts.
The Masters Tournament is just around the corner, so Phil Mickelson played a practice round with some fellow competitors Tuesday at Augusta National.
They had a little fun while they were at it. Mickelson was on the sixth hole when he overshot the green. Yahoo! Sports reported that at that moment, a fan decided to start some friendly competition with Mickelson.
“He was mouthing off about, ‘hard shot, get this up-and-down, no chance, blah, blah, blah,’ ” Mickelson said.
Mickelson bet the guy a whole dollar that he could get the ball up and down, or onto the green, where he could putt for par. He got it onto the green, but he missed a 7-foot putt. So he made the bogey, and he paid his debt.
“I had to pay him,” Mickelson said. “That’s what happens when you lose.”
Mickelson didn’t actually pay the fan from his own pocket. He didn’t have any singles, so he had to borrow a dollar from Jason Dufner’s caddy.
Mickelson’s group apparently was making bets throughout the practice round. A wager on a match with him and Ricky Fowler against Dufner and Dustin Johnson probably covered what Mickelson owed Dufner’s caddy.
“Rickie Fowler and I were partners today, and he went on a tear,” Mickelson said. “He shot 30 on the front nine; he eagles 13, he birdied 17 and 18, threw another one in on 15, I think. Just played remarkable golf. It was fun to have him as my partner.”
