US Open 2009:
This course is very long. We have three par 4's that are 500+ yards. Therefore, the player who wins will have to hit the most fairways, and then hit greens with his long irons. Tiger hit 49/56 fairways at Jack Nicklaus's tournament, and we all know that he can hit his long irons. In Tiger's practice rounds at the US Open, he has been hitting a lot of 3-iron's, and he is laughing about coming up short on a lot of greens. Mickelson will be running on adrenaline as the crowd favorite, especially with his wife having breast cancer. Ogilvy has not done much this year after winning his first tournament at (-24). His biggest problem is his Sunday play. He has shot 71 or higher in 9 of his 11 Sunday's this year. He may be due for a good outing, but I am not going to back him until he proves he can hold his own on Sundays. Furyk is a solid pick at 20/1. He is calm and collective and has been playing great lately, being in the top 10 in his last 3 tournaments, including 2nd at the Memorial. Casey at 25/1 is another good pick because he is good all around. But he just posted a 75-78 to finish his tournament at the Memorial.
We'll stop there with favorites to win, as I think it levels off to just bigger dogs at this point. Some dogs that I think have a chance to make a good showing are:
Sean O'Hair 40/1, and Steve Stricker 28/1 (and Furyk 20/1) are tied for first in the Top 10 Finishes category with 6 on the season.
Tim Clark 66/1 and Brian Gay 50/1 have solid Driving Accuracy this season, both sitting in the top 4 with 72%. Driving Accuracy will be important this weekend. Although I cannot imagine Brian Gay can win back to back tournaments (especially a major with Tiger in the field).
We also have Clark, Casey, and O'Hair in the top 7 for par 5 birdies, which shows long hitting and accuracy at the same time. (Mickelson and Ogilvy are right behind in T8th place).
I am going to ignore that Tiger is in the tournament because we can't bet him if we take multiple players. And I'd rather take 5 players at much better odds.
$10 each:
20/1 Furyk
25/1 Casey
28/1 Stricker
40/1 O'Hair
66/1 Clark
And 1 very long shot:
100/1 Bubba Watson
He is the PGA leader in driving distance with 313 (though he is in 181st place in driving accuracy), but we'll give it a try with these odds. Good Luck guys.
