DENVER -- In the end, Trevor Siemian didn't throw for 180 yards in his first NFL start, he did throw two interceptions, and it wasn't always a smooth ride on the learning curve.

But the 24-year-old never lost his composure and showed why Broncos coach Gary Kubiak picked him as Peyton Manning's replacement in a tense 21-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.

"Sure, there's butterflies every time you play," Siemian said. "I think something is wrong with you if you don't. I'm just super confident in the group of guys we have offensively. There are a lot of vets and a lot of great leadership in that group that I can lean on, and I'm just really confident in those guys."

Siemian, whose NFL résumé coming into the game had been just one regular-season play, a kneel-down against the Pittsburgh Steelers in December, finished 18-of-26 passing for 178 yards with a touchdown and the two interceptions.

But Siemian was composed in big moments, putting together two touchdown drives in the second half as the Broncos became the first Super Bowl winner to trail by at least eight points in the next season's opener before coming back for the win.

The Broncos rushed for 148 yards in the game and had a close-to-even split in the play-calling with Siemian's 26 pass attempts to go with their 29 rushing attempts.

"I thought Trevor handled his end of the bargain well," Kubiak said.

The Broncos opened the game with an apparent case of nerves around their new quarterback. They had taken their opening drive to the Panthers' 29-yard line when rookie Devontae Booker fumbled. Siemian's first interception ended the Broncos' second drive at the Panthers' 25-yard line.

On that play, Siemian's throw was swatted by Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei before being intercepted by linebacker Thomas Davis.

The Panthers had a 17-7 lead at halftime, and Siemian was picked off again in the Broncos' first possession in the third quarter when, in the face of a blitz, he couldn't step into the throw.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was open inside the Panthers' 10-yard line, but the pass was underthrown and intercepted by Panthers cornerback Bene Benwikere.

Kubiak said Siemian was never rattled after all of that.

"Nah, he wasn't," Kubiak said. "And actually the second interception, it really wasn't his fault ... and in fairness to the kid we should have picked [the blitz] up and he should have been able to step and throw. We didn't get that done."

Siemian then showed what likely won him the job in the first place, at least in addition to a power arm. It's his composure and ability to rebound from trouble.
After his second interception and a rather ugly three-and-out, Siemian led two touchdown drives. The first of those scores came when Siemian stared down the Panthers pressure and tossed a screen pass to running back C.J. Anderson, who took it 25 yards for a score that made it 17-14.

<article class="ad-300"></article>"There was pressure, and I knew I had to get it to C.J., somehow, some way, and it would be a big play," Siemian said. "He made a couple moves, had a heck of a run and got it in there. ... I knew it was a big play if I could get it to him. Somehow, some way, get it to C.J. and he'll take care of it."

Said Kubiak: "That was a great job. ... But Trevor really did an amazing job of pulling the rush in and getting the ball off ... just really good by kind of handling the situation."

Anderson scored on a 1-yard run to close out the Broncos' next possession and put Denver in position for the comeback win.

"We've got a resilient team, and you saw that tonight," Siemian said.

He looked really good. He made a quite a few rookie mistakes, but still got the W. I imagine once he cleans up with a little experience he will be very good. Had he not made those rookie mistakes, it would have been a easy win.

What got them most their wins, and a Super Bowl ring last year!

With that kind of team around him, he needs to play like Alex Smith, once he settles down.

You have a point.....Alex Smith never threw a pass past 10 yards...lol

I`m laughing but i agree.

Defense is still solid though.

Good luck!

Guy was far from shaky.
he got the ball out of his hand quick
yes the INT in the end zone is on him but I do not understand how you don't call a naked bootleg there instead of a play action that kept him in the pocket. You have a QB that can run this year, he would have walked in if Kubiak called a naked there.

wow. im not saying the kid was awful but jesus you people really think he was good? he made a few nice throws but lets pump the breaks. he is currently on pace to throw for 2,848 yards, 16 td's and 32 int's. If not for CJ Anderson and the defense they easily lose that game

It is more than just stats. Factor in everything. Look how he handled situations, read defense, quick releases. Going from a 3rd string QB to starter and was not even the #1 option a few weeks ago.... To week 1 season opener vs one of the best defenses from last season, super bowl team and one of the favorites for this year... He wasn't great but nobody even expected a decent game from him.

HE IS A BARGAIN...

[h=1]Brock Osweiler Is Making 86 Times More Than His Replacement… And Just Got Outplayed By Him[/h][h=2]<cite class="inline_inherit citation">By Joey Held on October 29, 2016</cite> in ArticlesSports News[/h]

Brock Osweiler got himself a Super Bowl ring last year with the Denver Broncos. When Peyton Manning finally hung up his cleats, it looked like the Broncos were Osweiler's team for the foreseeable future.
However, soon after the Super Bowl, Osweiler opted to go after big money instead, signing a four-year, $72 million deal with the Houston Texans. It certainly made sense – the Texans were coming off a playoff appearance, were stingy on defense with anchors like J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, and had some great offensive weapons in DeAndre Hopkins and the newly-acquired Lamar Miller. It seemed like a quarterback, especially one with a Super Bowl ring to his name, might be able to put the team over the hump.
And because football is funny that way, it only took six weeks into the following season before we got to see Osweiler face his former team, on a nationally televised Monday Night Football game, no less. How'd he do? Well, to put it bluntly…he was awful, and the Texans lost to the Broncos 27-9. In fact, Osweiler's 3.2 yards per pass attempt was the third worst in NFL history for any quarterback throwing more than 40 passes during the Super Bowl era.

Osweiler was outplayed by his replacement, Trevor Siemian. That's great news for the Broncos, because through six games this year, Siemian has made $216,176. Meanwhile, thanks to a hefty signing bonus, the Texans have already paid Osweiler $18.3 million this year. That's more than 86 times more than Siemian is making.
To add insult to (expensive) injury, Broncos cornerback and typical trash talker Aqib Talib said letting Osweiler go was a "win-win," since it not only saves the team money, but Siemian is an upgrade at quarterback, in Talib's eyes.
Of course, quarterbacks don't actually play against each other. There are a few circumstances that have caused Osweiler to struggle while Siemian has more or less thrived. In the Monday night game in particular, Denver's defense demonstrated that they're far superior, especially since the Texans have had several injuries on that side of the ball, and the front seven was putting so much pressure on Osweiler he barely had any time to throw. It also doesn't help that Houston's offensive line has been subpar, at best, this season.
Even so, Houston is paying a lot of money to a quarterback who hasn't been much better than the franchise has seen before. On the other side, Denver is looking quite smart for investing in someone who, for the time being, is playing with a ton of confidence at an absolute bargain price.
