a long time ago (circa 1982/3) my mom went to San Jose and this chapulin ripped a gold chain she was wearing with a medal. She followed the guy and chased him for about 4 blocks (suicidal now......probably not the wisest back then either)
She cornered him against a building and started hitting him with the umbrella (which broke)
THEN at the police headquarters the guy wanted to file a complaint against my mom for beating him up!
I wonder if you need some sort of permit to carry this umbrella :nohead:

Interesting gadget.
In all fairness, the same umbrella would probably hold up in any self defense situation, regardless of geographical location. Fair is fair, right? No need to bash Costa Rica further
In all fairness, Costa Rica is the only country were I've actually had to use my umbrella in self-defense.
(Knife wielding would-be robber, I pushed him off with my umbrella, walked into the street and grabbed a taxi -- was a few years ago)
