It's square no first half lines and so forth.

I'll be there also,be sure to purchase a ticket to the party in the ballroom as is sold out last year and it was a kick in the ass.

Call and ask them to purchase a ticket in advance.

All the beer you can drink if you like Bud and or Bud Lite.

If you ski your more than welcome to tag along, how long you going to be there as I arrive Super Sunday and staying through the week.

Thanks. I will be leaving the day after the SuperBowl. Will probably be skiing the week before the Superbowl. How much are tickets to the ballroom? I am assuming they have a huge TV?

I have been going to Reno for the Superbowl for years and normally stay at the Grand Sierra. Looking to do something a little different this year so chose the Peppermill. What are some of the good places to eat at the Peppermill?

Peppermill Sportbook and good eats

The Peppermill has a decent Sportbook but the eye candy at the Mill wiill have your head on a swivell. Free drinks are plentiful either from the clerk or the passing cocktail waitresses.
The Atlantis Sportsbook and Casino is several blocks away and you can usually get a variation in their lines if you can run the half mile in under 2:30, or if you have a rental car. Check out the Atlantis for their extensive beer menu, and free drinks are liberally given to sports book players. The food here generally sucks but their Buffet rivals the Peppermill, especially on Friday nights with crabl legs and peel shrimp.
Wedged in a shopping center is the infamous Jox Sports Bar and Grill, which is a must see stop featuring sports momorabalia from the 60s and 80s. Greg Lamond, Joe Montana, Jack Elway and a slew of other sports heroes line the walls. If you're a Los Angeles Ram fan, then you're in for a special treat with the ghosts of Merlin Olson, Roman Gabriel and the like looking on as you devour what many call the best chicken wings anywhere
(cheap too) and the best and cheapest Chicken Caesar I've ever tasted.
Over two dozen draft choices (count 'em), liberal video poker slots, non stop pool action, and a jukebox that never shuts up. They are open 24/7 and , oh yeah, I almost forgot, maybe a half dozen plasma screens for the total viewing package. If you play video poker your drinks are always comped.
The Peppermill's breakfasts are still legendary , but back inna day everything was half price after midnight and every entree was served with enough fruit to ward off scurvy for years to come.
Do check out the lounge next to the coffee shop. That's where the most gorgeous cocktail waitresses, attired in orange gossamer evening dresses, ply their trade. They usually kneel down to take your order and...the rest
left up to your imagination.
One of the Peppermills unwritten tenets is that they don't hire ugly people. You could be dumb as dirt and get hired; but if you're unattractive you are not working at the Mill.
Downtown is not even worth it, unless you hit the El Dorado and their brewery and nightclub. Shitty sportsbook and average food.
One last tidbit. There is a liquer called Tooaca made from almonds in Italy, that Jox sells more of than any other establishment in the world, so much so that the president of Tooaca came over to see what the fuss was about. When you do shots -its Tooaca- and it has a unique, not quite sweet taste, but a very strong flavor. The locals call in Too Wacky, so watch out.
Ordering a Too-wa-ka will give you the social cachet to really enjoy this unique establishment.

Have fun,

Jaime

More Peppermill and good eats

Well, you got me going on a trip down Memory Lane, I'd be remiss without including a few things.
Perhaps the best hamburger on the Planet is served at the Nugget downtown, no relation to John Ascaugua's Nugget. They have a 1/2 pound hamburger/cheeseburger weighing in at over a half pound, and served in a plastic red basket with lighted garlic salted shoestring fries spliling over the sides.. They reverentially call it the Awful Awful, and it is a killer. They have limited counter seating so what I do is order and hit the bar. All well drinks are served in buckets and the bartenders have lead thumbs. Oh yea, the Awful Awful is still only $3.50.
If you're staying at the Peppermill walk North several blocks to Mi Casa Too! Mexican Restaurant. The food here is nothing to scream Ole! about, but the Margaritas, especially the Guava and Strawberry, are some of the tastiest ever.
They use egg whites in their sweet and sour mix, and use either Sauza or Margaritaville reposado, as their tequila. They also have one of the most complete menus of Top Shelf tequilas anywhere. Guaranteed there are several you've never experienced. Do not eat here its very bland but the Nachos are tasty and you already know about the Margaritas.
If you want the best Mexican food in Reno head over to 4th Street to Bertha Miranda's. Huge Cowboy fans and everything is top notch. The Miranda family migrated from Chiauhaua, Mexico and brrought their delicious receipes along. Well worth the 1/2 hour ot an hour wait.
I almost forgot John Ascuagua's Nugget which is located directly underneath Interstate 80 in Sparks, Nevada. Ascuagua is of Basque heritage and his establishment hosts the annual Rib Coontest, which is a another gustatory experience I will cover later.
The Nugget has the best buffet in town, hands down. The price may be a few bucks more but Ascuagua is fastidious about quality. There are usually two carving stations operating, pork chops, crab legs, shrimp and a Bakery that you have to leave room for.
They also have an awesome Sports and Racebook downstairs and it is their own lines, not tied into cheapie Leroy's. Don't know aobut their limits, but they do have halftime lines and prop bets. John Junior used to run the sportsbook but he also ran parlay cards from California and that was a huge fine from the gambling commission -ultimately banishing Junior to the Food and Beverage Department..
Oops, John Ascuagua's has the famous Oyster Bar that is very traditional and very good.
One last thing, if it's snowing and you're staying at the Peppermill or John Ascuagua's Nugget, get a pass to the health club at either property. Both have huge pools and incredible jacuzzis with view of the surrounding Sierra's. Kick back and enjoy the view.

That's the highlights.
Bon appetite

Great information. I am going to have to try the Awful Awful. We will be staying downtown at Harrah's for a few nights as well.

Do you have any restaurant tips for South Lake Tahoe (Stateline area)?

mns....for Italian get reservations for Cafe Fiore...great food and unbelievable service. In the casinos, inside Harveys, try the Sage Room. Great steaks, lots of tableside stuff but not too pretentious.

If you need any other recomendations let me know. I have been here for 15 years. Oh...come have a beer at the Hard Rock Cafe...its on me.:toast:

I have been going to Tahoe to ski/gamble for about the past 15 years. We normally ski at Sierra, Kirkwood, Squaw, Alpine, and Northstar. We used to ski at Heavenly but haven't in the past 7 or so years. It seemed like a tourist trap and alot of uphill skiing across trails to get where you wanted to go. Do you ski? Has Heavenly changed much or is it still as I described?

I've had the awful awful and it's a heart attack in a basket but hard to stay away from.

Kinda hard to find the place but if you find Fitzgerald's Club it's right next to it,don't blink you'll miss it.

jimlandguy, you might find this disappointing but I believe John's sportsbook is now leased out to Leroy's.

Don't know for a fact but couple years ago when staying at Fitz the kid behind the Leroys counter wanted to work at the Leroy's at John's as was best shop for tips.

Cal Neva is a dump but has best sportsbook as far as lower vig, props an so forth and they have had a dog and a Heineken for a buck fifty for like 30 years.

Moneyneversleeps, your right about Heavenly and some of the uphill treks but Heavenly is the one resort everyone should ski once in their life.

And last year the Super Bowl party at the Mill was $50,but you get a pump keg at your table, they have a stadium theme buffet which actually left a bit to be desired.

They have raffle drawings and hot chicks(bud girls) throw out t-shirts and shit in between quarters.

You want to hang at our table during party p.m. me,each table sits I'd say a dozen people.

Also I can't remember if it's Alpine or Northstar but which ever one where you start at the bottom slowly lift through all the condos transfer off one lift to another and by the time you reach the top of the mountain your day is half over.

Did you know that Fitzgeralds closed? I have been going to Reno/Tahoe every year for the past 15 years. Every time I go another casino has closed down. Downtown is a dump but I sort of like it for the cheap single deck blackjack and good video poker.

Yeah, I snowboard mostly at Heavenly because of it being right around the corner. You are correct in that Heavenly has tons of traversing to get around. But if its a powder day and you are in south shore it is no question that you have to do Heavenly. It is for sure +EV when you factor in the killer trees and time spent going somewhere else. All that time getting somewhere else is time that the powder is getting tracked. (I knew your ears would perk at +EV) The gondola there is fairly new....getting you from the casinos to mid mountain in no time.
and for information purposes only I got Miami +3.5 -103...gl

Yeah a friend was telling me it was closing didn't know it was a done deal all ready.

Downtown is as cheap as it gets but can't really can't spend much time down there gets old fast.

One thing about Reno compared to Tahoe and Vegas is the comps, when you stay at the Mill be sure to get a players card and with a reasonable amount of action you will never pay for a room there again.

Especially since your from the east coast your e-mail will be filled with offers.

Peppermill ...South Lake Tahoe...eating, skiing

Moneyneversleesp,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you on your Tahoe question.
If I could hit the pause button in the game of life-I'd stop it on the time I spent in Tahoe, took three, er, four or five years off after college and lived life like the commercials tell you to do.
Mark Twain nee Samuel Clemens spend some quality time laying on the pristine beaches and smoking his pipe, one remarked that , "Lake Tahoe is the prettiest place the world affords." Right on.

I'm going to make sure your vacation is memorable and I'll include some off the radar stuff, some history, and just plain arcana.

Skiing...
The Tahoe area has more than 1230 lifts and 20,000 acreasof take your breath away terrain. I think there are more than 15 resorts, I will list my favorites.

Heavenly Valley bills itself as the "largest ski resort in the world", and that isn't necessarily a good thing. I worked there for several years and this advice should get you some good vertical skiing.
Find out when they are cut or groom the Gunbarrel, which is the face of the mountain and it has the longest, most vertical run in all of North America. They used to cut it Thursday night and I could hear the low hum of the snow cats as they groomed the mountain.....cont.
