[h=2]Pelini: Get rid of Signing Day

July 29, 2014

CHICAGO (AP) - If Nebraska coach Bo Pelini had his way, National Signing Day would be a thing of the past. And the result would be an improved recruiting process.

''You've made a commitment to a young man to come play in your program, why do we have to wait to any certain day?'' Pelini said. ''Why don't we just go ahead and let's sign on the dotted line, let's get it over with and move forward.''

That would be a big change from the system in place, where players have to wait until the signing period even if they've made an oral commitment. But what if they could sign as soon as they decide on a school?

''I think it would slow down some of the early offers,'' Pelini said. ''I think it would slow down some of the ridiculous things that go on on both ends, on the institution's side of things and as far as the recruit's.''

He used the word ''integrity'' and mentioning teaching athletes about honoring their commitment and ''what it means to be a teammate.''

''There's a bigger picture involved,'' Pelini said. ''And I think sometimes the way the recruiting process works is that contradictory to what we're trying to teach these kids and how we're trying to develop these kids in the long run to be successful, not only as football players and as athletes, but beyond, as husbands, as fathers, and their professions.''

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said the current system is ''antiquated'' and there needs to be more accountability. His solution? The Internet.

''If I'm offering a scholarship, I've got to go on a website and say I'm offering,'' Fitzgerald said. ''Bing, check the box. Everybody in the country has access to that website. All of a sudden the kid might get 50 of them, but everybody knows I've offered him a scholarship. There's a 48-hour window, a cooling-off period, where he can decide, where we can't pressure him to sign. That website kicks out an NLI (national letter of intent) and he can sign. After 48 hours, the offer is gone. There's no more commitment.''

If a school goes on probation or a coach gets fired, Fitzgerald said a recruit would get a 48-hour wind to ''click a box and say I'm no longer signed.''

NEW GROUND: The Big Ten expanded its footprint in the east where there's a large alumni base and big markets by adding Rutgers and Maryland. The way coach Kyle Flood sees it, Rutgers is expanding its footprint, too.

''It's also opened up some access in the Midwest,'' he said.

Rutgers, of course, will continue to focus on New Jersey and try to limit out-of-state schools from poaching players, something that has been an issue for the Scarlet Knights over the years. But Flood believes the new conference affiliation will open some doors for them in the Midwest to fill some holes.

Offensive line coach Mitch Browning and receivers coach Ben McDaniels have connections in Ohio.

''I don't expect us to be out in the Midwest full time,'' Flood said. ''But I think from year to year when there's a necessity and a numbers issue ... that's what the Big Ten allows you to do.''

---

SETTLING IN: Maryland coach Randy Edsall understands that leaving the ACC after 61 years jolted fans. He thinks they're coming around to it, though.

''It's been embraced, and people understand why we did what we did, how it's going to benefit us for now and into the future,'' Edsall said. ''I would say that the reaction now moving forward is people are very, very excited about what's gonna take place starting this fall.''

Maryland opens conference play at Indiana on Sept. 27 and gets a big test the following week when Ohio State visits. There are also Big Ten home games against Iowa, Michigan State and Rutgers as well as trips to Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan.

---

HE SAID IT: Minnesota coach Jerry Kill when asked what his favorite play on offense is: ''a successful one.''

WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THIS TOPIC???

IS THE NCAA MAKING THIS A BIG DEAL THAT IS HAS TO BE AIRED ON ESPN?

ARE THESE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS GETTING MORE PRESSURE TO PERFORM THEN NEEDEED?

DO WE SEE A BUST ON WHICH COLLEGE MADE A BIG MISTAKE?

YOUR VIEW?[/h]

There's some frustration built into Pelini's comments for losing committed kids late in the game to SEC schools and some implications that some other things going on are the reason behind it, like parenting and $. Two cases that come to mind are a DE that flipped to South Carolina at the last second (parent reversal in that case, iirc) and then more recently on a Washington transfer:

Samuel McKewon@swmckewonOWH · 1m Pelini on D. Stringfellow's flip: "Read between the lines. I think we all know what happened in that situation. link

>> Pelini was asked what happened with wide receiver Damore'ea Stringfellow, who committed to Nebraska — even signed non-binding papers to NU — but flipped to Ole Miss roughly two weeks later.

"Read between the lines," Pelini said. "I think we all know what happened in that situation."

When asked if parents making decisions for their kids on colleges was frustrating, Pelini said: "Yeah. And especially when it's a clueless parent."

It was later discussed on a radio station with a recruiting expert that left the blanks open to imply that $ was likely involved.

I agree the system is outdated. Get rid of signing day, also need to allow official visits in the summer, kids are making tons of visits in the summer anyway just on their own dime. Maybe some changes wont fix everything, but I think the long wait when a kid has decided probably leaves more room for the illegal stuff to go on.

The article that Cnotes posted chose just to focus on that one aspect. I was just expanding because there were other aspects of recruiting that were talked about and what might play a part in some of his views. Though it does seem that a lot of coaches were in favor of some reform.

I actually agree 100% with Pelini here. I've never really cared for the NSD process. It's outdated. The fact that it has taken so long to change it is another example of the NCAA's ineptitude...

He's upset because the parents likely got involved in their sons choice of school, and did so after he had already made a decision. The kid signed papers.. wouldn't you be upset?

upset?...fuck him...have some class! to call a kid's parents CLUELESS because they had a say in his decision which didn't go in "mr 4-losses" favor is inexcusable

thankfully a few parents are part of their delinquent son's decisions around this country. seems to me, as a brasky fan, you should know that Bo hasn't exactly lit it up on the recruiting trail (or on the football field).

There needs to be an early signing period like basketball. Having no signing period would be a complete mess.

The scenario on Stringfellow, as I heard it, is this: he visited Nebraska with one parent (don't know which). They both loved it. He signed scholarship papers, which legally binds Nebraska to have him. The kid can still pull out until he registers for classes.. or attends class, I don't the exactly what binds him. Mississippi came in at the last minute and wooed the "other" parent, aka the clueless one. Quite frankly, I don't like Nebraska being a reformatory for troubled transfers. They are already taking a chance on Alex Lewis, and I've finally become ok with that, but mostly because he's second generation. My guess is the "clueless" part has to do with Stringfellow coming from trouble and going directly to Mississippi.....becoming an overnight recruiting success, and having a recruit post pics with wads of cash, doesn't imply guilt, but it sure looks like smoke. I'm implying that Mississippi might not be the best place to keep his nose clean. And don't forget Pelini coached at LSU. Im sure he knows all and well that things are at another "level" in that region.

you brasky boys keep defending this loser's statements and that is quite a surprise. hell i can't tell you ole miss' recruiting practices but i can assure you ed orgeron isn't there anymore (like he was when pelini was at a real conference) and ole miss hasn't won shit in decades, in case you think that money buys titles

Bo needs to 1) keep his mouth shut and 2) recruit non-punks out of high school, not wait for criminals that transfer, and 3) do everything a whole lot better than he currently is

i'm sure you huskers fans are on board with those three, eh?

Not sure where I am defending him. I'm indifferent. It's just talk, no different than what we saw coming out of the SEC recently. I agree, though on one thing. Ole Miss' highlight is having Mannings as alums, then out of nowhere a top ten class. Peculiar. Your 2nd point I already addressed. I don't want thugs at my alma mater. I was against it. I'd much prefer the Ameer Abdullah's that amount to more than ball players. 3rd, he does need to get better, if he wants to stick around.
