The most important thing a hitter can do is get on base. Batting average is a useless stat when it comes to deciding the merits of a baseball player. In OB% Morgan by far is the better player than Sandburg.

Sandburg had better power numbers than Morgan, but he also didn't have Morgan's longevity. Ryno had maybe 10 solid years in the majors; hardly enough to be a first round hall of fame inductee. Maybe next year, though much of it depends on who is on the ballot in 2005. Blyleven should be in before Sandburg, but it doesn't look like that will happen.

For gosh sakes.......MORGAN had over 1800 walks!!!!!!!!! That more than makes up for the little 13 points that RYNO had higher in BA.

Ryno had a mere .025 higher slugging percentage.........playing in a BANDBOX BALLPARK compared to Joe playing in Riverfront and the Astrodome..........for Godssakes guy!!!

Very very seldom did Joe EVER steal a base that didnt mean something!!!! Joe was a premiere baserunner and basestealer.

Not to mention his PLAYOFF accomplishments over RYNO.

This agrument is ridiculous.

Your lucky I am not a huge MORGAN fan or RYNO hater.

I love Ryno......great ballplayer. Can play on my team anyday.

But NOWAY was he the ballplayer JOE was.........NO FREAKING WAY!

Joe Morgan is a you had to be there and see for yourself kind of player. Stats alone don't tell the story. As far as Alomar and Sandberg go you are right. Morgan vs. Alomar, just ask anyone who goes back to the 60's and really knows baseball.

"Your lucky I am not a huge MORGAN fan or RYNO hater"

thanks fish...i feel lucky.

by the way, one time in college i drank too much at a party and passed out in the basement. when i woke up, i had to take a huge dump. it was quite a predicament as the bathroom was locked for some reason and i did not know the people who lived there so i didn't want to wake them up. it was like 4:00 am and i was about 1/2 mile from my apartment. i thought about running home (didn't have a car) but, there was no way i could hold it.

my mind quickly ran thru the options...none of them were pretty. finally, i did the only thing i could...i went into one of the closets on the first floor. i was all set to just squat right there on the floor but, lo and behold, i looked down and saw a packer helmet of all things.

i decided shitting in the helmet was a much better option than on the floor for many reasons. so, i let it fly. even used the chin strap to wipe. then, i got the hell out of there.

anyway, that memory popped into my head when i saw your new avatar.

60's? Morgan wasn't much in the 60's wil...I respect your opinion, I just don't think he was THAT much better....I think his legend has grown (as we see with alot of older retired players) Almomar was a spectacular player,he was Ozzie Smith at 2nd base... and I admit he is somewhat a sulker with a bad attitude, but he has done some great things too...

IF he reasserts himself for 3-4 years here , he will have numbers that will put him in the HOF the first time out...

JM I meant the 60's only as a reference time frame. In other words if you know 60's baseball, you are bound to know 70's and 80's as well.
