Do we have to go thru this love affair of stallworth all over again.

Geez, you guys act like this punk is the 2nd comming or something.

Why does this plug get so much respect.

That contract was a joke. What a waste of money. He will get cut by year 2.

How is a 1 yr contract for $3.6 million...a joke...in today's free agent market.

What are you guys missing here? Its a complete bonus incentive contract...if he produces big time, then he'll get payed big time.

If he doesn't produce its a lousy $3-$5 million salary cap hit, for a team that was under the Cap by $30 million...and the top receiver was Reche Caldwell (and nearly made the Super Bowl still).

Explain to me how this could end badly for the Pats?

Maybe this kid is the type that knows he has to stay challenged to stay intrested. He could have played anywhere else with a comprable contract with more garantees, but he chose the Pats.
Its definatley worth the gamble and an upgrade from the turds they went into the AFC championship with.

X Colts,Pitt. are one trick ponies.basically blow their load and are all done.
The Pats are multi orgasmic and will probably have three or more violent tremors after their "down" years.
I mean you've got your Jerry Lee Lewis's and Roy Orbisons but there is only one Flying Elvis.

you keep acting like they can cut him after a year and only owe 3.6 million....The contract guarantees $12 million

Reports of Stallworth's Contract Were Greatly Exaggerated

As we've already noted, the Patriots have signed Donte' Stallworth to a free-agent contract. But while ESPN's previous report said Stallworth was guaranteed to make $12 million in the deal, the same ESPN.com story now reads, in part:

An initial report on ESPN.com saying the deal was worth a guaranteed $12 million was later clarified by a source, who said the deal -- which only guarantees one year -- gives Stallworth and the Patriots flexibility.

The deal actually gives Stallworth $3.6 million in 2007. Nothing beyond that is guaranteed.

The fact that ESPN changed its initial report makes for some interesting questions about how contract numbers are reported. Did agent Drew Rosenhaus try to float the bigger contract number to make himself look good? Did the Patriots float the bigger contract number to counteract the claims of some former Patriots (including receiver Deion Branch) that they're cheap? Or was it simply a miscommunication between a reporter and his source?

I'm inclined to believe that last one, but NFL contracts are often reported as being much larger than they turn out to be, with money at the end of the deal that everyone knows will never be paid. We should all remember to take contract numbers with a grain of salt.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus called Donte' Stallworth's contract in New England a one-year deal.

We're posting this for anyone who that thinks New England could consider paying Stallworth $9.6 million in bonuses in 2008. Rosenhaus said that since Stallworth was ultimately signing for one year, he chose New England over Miami because of Tom Brady's presence.

He chose the Pats because Rosenhaus saw what 2nd-tier receivers like David Givens, David Patten and Deion Branch got in free-agency ... and what Daniel Graham made this year.

The gamble is that Tom Brady will increase Stallworth's value ... he will play a year for New England, produce and if the Pats cut him, he hit free-agency with a bang ... if he plays well, the Pats keep him. No lose either way.

... and think of what David Patten, Daniel Graham and David Givens made after they left New England ... THAT is what Rosenhous sees right now ... he knows that Brady will increase Stallworth's value.

The question that you should be asking (and I am thinking of) is:
If this is essentially a 1-year deal, why didn't the Pats just sign him to a 1-year contract?

Probably that way if he has a good season, he cant go elsewhere for more money. The pats can keep him and hes already signed. If he stinks up the joint they can cut him after 1 year.

Yeah- Drew Rosenhaus just came out & said this is basically a 1 year deal...I would assume his thinking, is: Patriots have zero go to receivers....Tom Brady (Top 3 Qb in the league) at QB, & Bill Belichick (Top Head Coach) at the helm...this has great potential for his client.

Realistically - the Pats wont keep him after this season...thats not their business philosophy...but the multi-year still gives them an option/opportunity to do so.

A win-win situation for player, and team.

I understand the Patriots have become the Yankees on the NFL...and everyone wants to root against them, shit on 'em, wish for the worst, etc.

But even the biggest Patriots Nay-Say'ers...cant argue that the Pats have had an A+ off season...and they still have 2 first rounders in the upcoming draft.

also...just announced:

The Patriots and free agent WR Kelley Washington have reached agreement on a five-year contract, his agent told the Boston Globe.

Washington would add size to New England's receiving corps and could become a fantasy factor as a red-zone target. This will make it tougher for Jabar Gaffney to make the club in 2007, and it seems like the Patriots are not planning on having Chad Jackson (knee) healthy by the season.

Washington joins rebuilt Pats WR corps

<HR width="100%" noShade SIZE=1>

Continuing the wholesale overhaul of their wide receiver corps, the New England Patriots on Monday reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Kelley Washington, who played the first four seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The deal can be for as many as five years, with a maximum value of $22 million, but is also structured so that it could be as short as just one season. Washington will receive a signing bonus of $300,000.

As is the case with the six-year contract agreed to with New England by wide receiver Donte Stallworth on Sunday, the Patriots must pick up an option payment to retain the speedy Washington beyond the 2007 season. It is believed that payment is $4 million.
"I am happy to be a part of such a great franchise, and to have the opportunity to help the Patriots get back and win another Super Bowl," Washington said. "The privilege to play with arguably one of the best quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady, and to be coached by someone like Bill Belichick is a blessing. I am very excited about contributing to the New England Patriots."
Washington also had a contract offer from the Miami Dolphins.
One of the most active franchises in the early free agent market, the Patriots have been particularly aggressive in rebuilding a wide receiver corps that was a major disappointment in 2006. In addition to signing Stallworth and Washington, the Patriots acquired restricted wide receiver Wes Welker from the Dolphins last week for second- and seventh-round choices in this year's draft.
The gamble on Washington is a solid one, given that the Patriots appear to have made a fairly modest initial investment for a player who has enormous physical upside if he can stay healthy and play to his potential.
Washington, 27, is a big, speedy wide receiver whose career has been stalled by a series of injuries at both the college and professional levels. The former University of Tennessee wideout played only one full season for the Volunteers before leaving school early for the 2003 draft.
A third-round choice of the Bengals in 2003, he has 72 receptions for 893 yards and nine touchdowns in 44 games, including six starts. His best season was in 2004, when Washington registered 31 receptions for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Senior writer Len Pasquarelli covers the NFL for ESPN.com.
