Pretty sure they count the presales for the weekend g****. This one's kinda hard to predict, since you've got major hype surrounding a film that is of a theme that never brings is a lot of dough.
Last Tempation of Christ: TOTAL G**** 8 million and change. That movie had the same sort of controversy swirling around it leading up to it's release and didn't do squat at the box office.... this time around might be different? For one, the Passion looks slightly more accessible than Temptation. Mel Gibson is more of a pop icon than Scorsese you could say. People have liked the preview. Not sure if it matters, but the Last Temptation was 3 hours or so and Passion is just over 2. The pre-sales alone and the fact it's been #1 on moviefone for days now shows there's a lot more interest in this one... The moviefone chart would seem to indicate a 50 million dollar opening, which is probably way out of reach realistically.
