CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — After the worst game of Jake Delhomme's career came in an ugly playoff loss, the Carolina Panthers never wavered that he was still their quarterback for the long-term.

On Thursday, they proved it, giving Delhomme a five-year, $42.5 million extension that keeps the 34-year-old under contract through the 2014 season.

"It's all about being able to know that I can finish my career here in Carolina," Delhomme said. "That's what I've wanted, all I've ever wanted."
The deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money and clears much needed salary-cap space for Carolina. Delhomme was to count for more than $10 million under the cap next season in the final year of his deal.

The Panthers' cap is weighed down by Julius Peppers' one-year tender under the franchise tag that is worth $16.7 million and has prevented any offseason signings.

Delhomme's extension comes just over three months following his nightmare performance. After a strong season following reconstructive elbow surgery the year before, Delhomme threw five interceptions and lost a fumble in Carolina's 33-13 loss to Arizona in the NFC divisional playoffs.
"We all know last year was a good year that ended terribly," Delhomme said. "Nobody was more disappointed than I was for not putting my team in a position to win. That's something I've always tried to pride myself on.

... Why it happened I don't know. But it did and certainly things weren't good for a while."

Delhomme has been taking part in Carolina's offseason conditioning program this month, while getting strong support from coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney, who have rebuffed suggestions they look for another QB.

The Panthers are 54-33 in the regular season and playoffs in the past six seasons when Delhomme starts, 6-10 when he doesn't.

"He has been a leader on the field, is a talented quarterback, is a perfect fit for our team and was a big reason we were able to win the NFC South last year," Hurney said. "He has also always represented the team in the highest manner and earned the respect of everyone throughout the organization."

Delhomme was signed as a relatively unknown free agent from New Orleans after the 2002 season. After Rodney Peete struggled in the 2003 season opener, Delhomme replaced him at halftime, led Carolina to a comeback win and remained the starter as the Panthers reached the Super Bowl.

Delhomme also led the Panthers to the playoffs in 2005 and last season. And while he receives criticism for his unorthodox style and fiery temper, the Panthers struggled mightily without him in 2007, when Delhomme needed ligament-replacement surgery in his right elbow.

"If anybody wants to go back to '07, have fun," his agent, Rick Smith said.
After the reconstructive surgery, Delhomme came back strong in 2008. He threw 15 touchdown passes and had 12 interceptions as the Panthers won the division title before everything went wrong against the Cardinals.

"It was just one of those days where I didn't see the field well," Delhomme said. "It did hurt. That's part of it. You learn from it. I don't know any other way to put it. It's not something that you sweep under the rug."
But with this rich deal, Delhomme will clearly remain Carolina's starter ahead of Josh McCown and Matt Moore.

Not a Panthers backer here by no means, but imo most people here are shaking their heads over this deal. This qb imo cant win the big game and just dont really get it here.Look like the Panthers are going down the same road as the old Hornets team here.i guess when the stands are empty , they will feel the need to go after a qb, jake is not the answer here, that the main reason Peppers want to leave the grapevine is telling me...ck

They did it to save cap room. Obviously he won't be the QB through 2014. Probably just no better alternative now.

If he's still there in 2014, I'll give YOU the $22.5M that's not guaranteed.

honestly its not even close, delhomne jokes away big game after big game, and when his stuff is not there, he still tries to force it, leading to 5+ int games. Im a really big fan of anderson, hes got a very strong arm and hes mobile for his size. If his wr's and tight ends would catch easy balls he wouldnt be forced to try to make perfect throws that can lead to easy mistakes and second guessing. Thats why you say cleveland dumping winslow, edwards on trading block, quinn on block, yet anderson (who teams have shown interest in like jets/bucs/panthers hasnt moved)

Anderson had one productive season and he threw 19 freakin picks during it. He was also 10-26 for 0 TDs and 1 INT in his playoff game. I don't see how you can think that's better, especially in the playoffs, then Delhomme.

Jake has never thrown for more then 16 interceptions in any season of his career and his 115-76 career TD-INT ratio speaks for itself. Anderson barely has more TDs then INTs.

Jake had a horrible game last time against Arizona in the playoffs but this is the same guy who lead his team to the NFC championship game the last time he got to the playoffs. He also threw for more TDs then INTs in those 3 games in 2006.

This is also the same guy that lead his team to the Super Bowl in 2003 with a 6 TD, 1 INT playoff effort. His best game of all came in the Super Bowl with 3 TDs to 0 INTs.

I don't know how you can say he's a choker. The guy had one bad playoff game last season but has a 11 TD-6 INT ratio in the 2006 and 2003 playoffs (the 2 prior years Carolina made the playoffs).

look at the running game delhomne has behind him and a stud wr who instead of dropping balls, makes acrobatic catches. delhomne is pushing it in age and injuries are starting to build up.

Yes its true Delhome was a pretty good QB, when he was throwing to Muhamid. Lets not forget Smith too. If any QB had those two together they'd put up pretty good numbers too.

Muhammad left Delhomme and had 3 horrible seasons. Came back and put up nearly 1000 yards with his highest catch total since he left. All this on a team that runs for a big chunk of their yards. I think that says something.

steve smith only had 78 catches and 6 tds, a reason why muhammad's stats were up. also no other wr/te on the team caught more than 22 balls.

It just seems you are faulting the guy for managing a good game. He's not asked to throw 50 times a game like Derek Anderson and constantly makes better decisions to help his team win. Anderson makes horrible decisions and there is a reason Cleveland is a poor team.

cleveland is a poor team bc the defense sucks, there was no relationship between the wrs/qb's, and a lack of a running game. Braylon hates being in cleveland as the fans ride his ass for his drops and the fact hes a michigan guy doesnt help. Winslow has wanted out forever. People complained about anderson and brady quinn came in and did just as shitty as anderson, why bc it was never the qbs fault to begin with. Trade quinn and braylon pick up guys along the lines of moreno and crabtree, plus some defensive skill guys and cleveland will be moving in the right direction. You start to over do things when u lose faith in your guys, and thats when anderson started going down hill. There is a reason the new coach is in love with his arm, bc he has a good 1.

I'm a big fan of the Panthers and always have been. I don't know about Jake. I want to believe in him but he's had some horrible games and has went through times where he can't seem to make a play to save his life.

I'm staying optimistic about the Panthers and hope Jake that crazy cajun and the Panthers have a great season.

I am an avid Panthers fan who is really good at giving a non bias opinion of my teams....

Carolina is a strange kind of fan, they really don't know what they want. Before Delhomme went down with injury, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE wanted Carr to replace him. After Carr got his chance, people were begging for Delhomme back... The after that horrific playoff performance, everyone wanted him gone..

Here is myhonest assestment Delhomme. He is a great leader, someone our offense needs... He has ALWAYS been a huge risk taker, and many compare him to Farve, a poor man' Farve, but that is very accurate.. He likes risks and pressure.. he has some of the best 2 min drill stats in the league... Last Year, first year back from surgery, I think he lost some velocity, and all those needle thread passes became easy interceptions....

If Delhomme doesn't have the zip on the ball he did before, he is done.... If it was just fatigue from the surgery, then this move isfine because he will be our QB for 2 more years... He won't lst the 4

You don't think that Anderson's stats are as good as they are because he is asked to throw so much to keep up? I just don't think highly of that guy at all because of his poor decision making. Delhomme would have much better stats then Anderson if pressed to throw a ton IMO. We'll just have to agree to disagree. :toast:
