[FONT="]America’s major professionals sports leagues appear to be all in on legalizing widespread sports wagering.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]The decision by the National Hockey League to make Las Vegas home to its 31st franchise is just the latest signal that sports betting is being embraced by sports franchise owners.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver, who often appears to be two steps ahead of most other league CEOs, was an early proponent, arguing two years ago in the New York Times that it was time to bring flourishing underground gambling into the open.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]“Congress should adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports, subject to strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards,” he said.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]That never happened, and now a sports franchise is planning to make Las Vegas home. It doesn’t appear to matter what we think about the decision. It could be challenged, but we imagine the NHL did its homework before choosing a city that advertises with a wink and a smile, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
[/FONT]
[FONT="]It also seems certain the NHL is just the first to remove all pretense of a hard line between sports and gaming.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]What matters now is how sports and gaming interests proceed. And it especially means government regulators at the national and state levels must prepare to respond regardless of how late they have come to the game.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]It is not as though we haven’t been warned. National Football League commissioner Roger Goodall, who had been slow to embrace gambling, is clearly warming to the idea. The Washington Post’s Nick Martin in his Early Lead column, reported that the NFL CEO told ESPN’s Mike and Mike in April, “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling. To me, where I cross the line is anything that can impact on the integrity of the game. If people think it is something that can influence the outcome of a game, we are absolutely opposed to that.”

[FONT="]Everyone says that, of course. But we’re not working hard or fast enough to be sure it doesn’t happen.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]Take daily fantasy sports betting websites which couldn’t count the money fast enough before authorities began moving to bar them in some states. Illinois — the third largest market — is among them. Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued an opinion that the games are illegal under Illinois law, though, players can continue to play them unless and until a judge says they can’t.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]Illinois lawmakers led by Rep. Mike Zalewski tried to stay ahead of the curve. But his bill was tabled last month after allegations of improper lobbying — categorically denied by FanDuel and DraftKings — were raised.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]Of course, even that appearance of impropriety shows why regulation is vital, especially now that there is word those two top players in fantasy sports may be considering a merger. If competition disappears and nobody in government is looking over the house’s shoulder, who will? Sporting franchises also should embrace careful regulation. If the NFL thought Deflategate was bad, imagine how big a blowup a betting scandal would be.

[FONT="]American Gaming Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman told a group of reporters, according to Mr. Martin’s Early Lead column, “A regulated and transparent market is the best approach for ensuring integrity in the sports.”
[/FONT]
[FONT="]He’s right, of course. And he’s wise not to expect Washington to move quickly.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]“Frankly, I think it’s premature to really be on Capitol Hill in a traditional lobbying sense,” he said. “We’re working to expose that problem, produce the research, help people understand the problem that’s out there, and much of that is going on through the media, it’s going on through our own grassroots efforts and other activities.”
[/FONT]
[FONT="]Information is what good lobbyists do best. What good government does best is find independent experts to research and vet information from an industry which last year pulled in $1.5 billion from unregulated betting.
[/FONT]
[FONT="]Government, not gaming interests, is ultimately responsible for protecting the consumer. It’s well past time to stop abdicating that responsibility.

[FONT="]That never happened, and now a sports franchise is planning to make Las Vegas home. It doesn’t appear to matter what we think about the decision. It could be challenged, but we imagine the NHL did its homework before choosing a city that advertises with a wink and a smile, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

[FONT="]It also seems certain the NHL is just the first to remove all pretense of a hard line between sports and gaming.

[FONT="]What matters now is how sports and gaming interests proceed. And it especially means government regulators at the national and state levels must prepare to respond regardless of how late they have come to the game.

[FONT="]It is not as though we haven’t been warned. National Football League commissioner Roger Goodall, who had been slow to embrace gambling, is clearly warming to the idea. The Washington Post’s Nick Martin in his Early Lead column, reported that the NFL CEO told ESPN’s Mike and Mike in April, “All of us have evolved a little bit on gambling. To me, where I cross the line is anything that can impact on the integrity of the game. If people think it is something that can influence the outcome of a game, we are absolutely opposed to that.”

[FONT="]Take daily fantasy sports betting websites which couldn’t count the money fast enough before authorities began moving to bar them in some states. Illinois — the third largest market — is among them. Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued an opinion that the games are illegal under Illinois law, though, players can continue to play them unless and until a judge says they can’t.

[FONT="]Illinois lawmakers led by Rep. Mike Zalewski tried to stay ahead of the curve. But his bill was tabled last month after allegations of improper lobbying — categorically denied by FanDuel and DraftKings — were raised.

[FONT="]Of course, even that appearance of impropriety shows why regulation is vital, especially now that there is word those two top players in fantasy sports may be considering a merger. If competition disappears and nobody in government is looking over the house’s shoulder, who will? Sporting franchises also should embrace careful regulation. If the NFL thought Deflategate was bad, imagine how big a blowup a betting scandal would be.

[FONT="]American Gaming Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman told a group of reporters, according to Mr. Martin’s Early Lead column, “A regulated and transparent market is the best approach for ensuring integrity in the sports.”

[FONT="]“Frankly, I think it’s premature to really be on Capitol Hill in a traditional lobbying sense,” he said. “We’re working to expose that problem, produce the research, help people understand the problem that’s out there, and much of that is going on through the media, it’s going on through our own grassroots efforts and other activities.”

[FONT="]Information is what good lobbyists do best. What good government does best is find independent experts to research and vet information from an industry which last year pulled in $1.5 billion from unregulated betting.
