Just wondering what you guys use for home computer virus protection.
The only two I know of are McAfee and Norton. (I have found that Mcafee 7.0 Home version REALLY SLOWS MY COMPUTER to a crawl!)

Does anyone use Norton or any others ? Keep in mind this is Windows98SE and not Windows XP.

Thanks.

I use Nortin for 98 & XP buddy. No problems with either. I just load it and it does its job.

Good luck

Thanks General,
My computer has been acting strangly for several weeks. I called the internet provider, as I thought it was a problem on their end. Finally, as a last resort--I deleted the latest version of McAfee Virus (figured it couldn't hurt anything--and my computer runs LIKE NEW!)
But I don't want to have the same problem with Norton.

I use Norton. It is very important for everyone to get the updates on protection. Also make backups of your computer files just in case.

I hate Norton.I find it takes over my machine and slows it down. I use a free anti-virus program called AVG

www.grisoft.com/

It has worked well for me and it doesn't take over your computer like Norton and McAffee.

Thanks Gart and TTinCo.

Yes taking over my computer was exactly what Mcafee did and I could not tell what was wrong. The ISP people had me adjust various settings--I got rid of 75% of my favorites. Nothing helped. I'm glad I know about Norton. I will only "pay for" softwrae that has a toll free numbere to ask questions from now on. The Mcafee website (forum) is a joke. To get real help you have to call and pay a per-minute charge.

I use AVG as well and I have turned at least a dozen people on to it over the last year or two.

works great, never a problem.

no slow downs, no freeze ups, no conflicts.

buddyboy, I also have AVG but I just recently came across a review of it in PC World or PC Mag or one of those pc mags (do a google search and you'll find it) and several other anti-virus progs and it was not given a good rating so I am looking at others.

For those technically adept, I came across this
http://grc.com/su-fixit.htm

and I was wondeirng if this unbinding is a good idea?

Time-
Ive got nav on a 95 machine- no noticeable diff.
SOunds like mcaf was your prob if things are much better now. I thinks thats odd.
Check active tasks after boot and see whats running(ctrl-alt-delete)= only a few things are necessary. If you want to check that and report back Ill advise on whats needed and guide you on how getting junk off.

JC, on the Trend filter, it's called the "DF filter".....but if enabled, you won't see anything from JJ either.

Finally got in a chat room with one of their technichans. He says that the reason I'm having trouble is that I did not delete all the old McAfee Virus stuff. I have togo into the Registry Editor Screen and delete a whole bunch of stuff.

I'm thinking that maybe the Windows Temporary folder MIGHT have been the problem. There was a lot of stuff in there to be deleted.
