I know excatly how you feel and my thoughts are with you. Ive just recently had to put down 2 of my dogs recently and its the hardest and most heart-wrenching thing you have to do. But it bothered me more to see them suffer. I only wish it was legal and ethical to do it for humans. And anyone that tells you "its only a dog...get over it"....well then they are a heartless bastard. If humans were more like dogs this World would be a much better place to live in.

Sorry for your dilemma.

I would also suggest looking into a farm of some sorts for the dog.

Thanks everyone. thx fucnluc, perspective is everything and yes it is the first time in 20 years I've had such a good long cry - makes me think I've been maybe too shallow in the meantime ha ha. Yeah, he's just a dog, but he's my friend that never criticizes or judges and is always in the mood for playtime.

thx, even to the naysayers. I should probably man up and just get over it like a bad beat. If any of you have dogs, look it face to snout and truly promise that you will always take care of him. Have your kids fall in love with him. Then go out and put him down - just like that.

I'm still asking shelters and rescues around here about him but they all say that they can't in conscience take him in and re-home him with his idiopathic aggression. The dog walker thinks his wiring is screwed up so anything we try will be in vain.

Joey, your two are simply unbelievable. LOOK at those eyes.

copa, he's a lab-spaniel mix.

Why not try a farm?

I can't believe some people in this thread are actually offended by the feelings of someone else ...Putting the dog to sleep seems a bit extreme considering there are alternatives that are not that unrealistic.

J-man, I've been asking about that option as well. Tough to find someone willing to take him on.

that is exactly what I was saying above, and what the problem is with my dogs fear, there is nothing I can do to comfort her, or get her over it, she was not beatten or abused....

its just her wiring....

not all people can walk the streets due to psychological problems, and not all dogs can either.

We've had pet rabbits over the years. I remember when our first rabbit died I cried like I never had before. I was shocked at my reaction, but it honestly took a long time to get over. For many of us losing a pet is like losing a best friend or a family member. I totally understand your wanting to post this here as I'm sure you consider this a supportive community. I hope you're able to find a happier solution.

Sorry to hear about your dog and your pain.

FWIW, I had to give up an aggressive dog several years ago. She ended up "out in the country" and did very well in this environment and became one of the best hunting dogs in the area.

I'm not sure where you're located, but maybe Cesar Millan's group or a trainer could help?

Here is a link to his DVD dealing completely with aggression.

My dog is the greatest but will snap at me when it wants to be left alone. I'm not sure it is unusual for certain dogs to have a more aggressive personality. I don't believe that it is right to put a perfectly healthy dog to sleep. There are definitely other alternatives like a former poster mentioned of giving him to a farmer. Why don't you atleast wait until after the holidays and think of alternatives before you make this decision that you may regret for quite some time?

By the way did you ever consider that your tenant and girlfriend were just looking for an excuse to leave without hurting your feelings? Did they ever get bit? By the Dog?

That sucks man, it's a very tough decision. You're doing the right thing by analyzing the situation fairly. Although cute, you say he is a loose cannon. If you think you've cried today, imagine how you would feel if he were to bite a child. Imagine how scarred the child would be mentally for life.

Sometimes the right decision is the hardest one to make.

tough situation man, I could not imagine putting my mutt down...I like to think that most dogs can be trained to eliminate these types of problems, but if the animal has been abused, it may be very challenging.

I have had my new dog for about a year, I don't think he was abused, but he is not into being petted at all and sometimes I wonder if he was either not exposed to humans at first, or had bad experiences...check out this video from the other night...we just moved back to LA and have tons of coyotes in the hills behind our house...they make a lot of noise when they make a kill, this shows the first time he heard them...if you haven't heard coyote's before, it is a trip...turn up the volume and you can hear them at the beginning of the video...dog is named Dexter (after former Redskin great - Dexter Manley, of course)

Exercise the hell out of the dog and I'll bet it shapes up in no time. Had two very naughty dogs - ran in the house, dug stuff up, tore the house to shreds. Basically about given up on them - then decided to take them running, religiously walk them for 45 mins per night, etc. Turned into new dogs - I think they just had a lot of pent up energy that they needed to get rid of. I agree, usually the dog can be trained to do other stuff if you are patient and dedicated enough. This stuff about a dog wired bad is just bunk - usually laziness on the owner's part quite honestly.
