OT - Computer help required

ok my computers getting old and its pretty much dying. However I really don't feel like throwing away 500+ dollars if its not really necessary.

Problem is I cannot reach the main regular Windows page in "normal mode". My computer seems to load up windows ok and everything is good but when the loading stops all I get is a bright blue screen/black screen. There are no buttons anyway to click on and all I see is my mouse pointer. The only action I can take at this point is if I press ALT+CTRL+DEL. That will bring up the task manager.

Anyways right now I can operate regularly in safe mode but this is already getting old.

Any ideas on how I can get back into "normal mode"? Perhaps something in the configuration/setup? Or some good anti-virus softwares that would probably deal with this.

When you get task manager open. Find the "explorer.exe" process & end it.

Then go to "new task" and type explorer.

Do you get your desktop back then?

backup your data and reinstall windows.

do a full reinstall and it will be like a new computer.

Well it appears now I get nothing but a blank black screen where I can do absolutely nothing. Oh how I wish for the days I got the empty bright blue screen! lol

Physically don't have Windows, guess it was pre installed.

I am guessing you are using WIN XP ?
I will also assume, this was working fine before ?

anyway ... shut-down PC, resart computer pressing down F8 once,before windows starts, this will bring up a menu screen.

look for " last known working configuration'

press enter on that ... and retry.

Am assuming windows xp? If you have the major companies computer ala dell/hp/etc then you are entitled to get the cd. You don't have to pay the full retail ($100+) but a simple shipping cost. In fact you might be able to be bring your computer back to its original state with a matter of pressing two buttons and be back up and running within 10minutes (Factory Image). What type of computer is it?

If you can't get the cd, then bttorent is your friend. There are "ways" of easily getting cd.

I suggest this route, because most likely you have spyware/virus corrupting your registry. You might spend 10hours to trying to fix it only to be back in this spot 2weeks later. Sometimes its best to cut your loses.

Yes its Windows XP. Unfortunately I didn't buy it from a huge name. I got it from a local company in the area. Bastards actually charged me 100 bucks or so a few years ago when I encountered a problem. I doubt they'll do me any favors free of charge. I do remember my previous computer just had a recovery disk I could throw in any time to clean the slate. Anywho its a Intel Celeron 2.6 gig.

If it didnt come with a CD, you may have a recovery EPROM in your PC ?
try F10 or F12 depending on your PC,,

during startup ... before windows starts,there should be a Brand-Screen,
with the name of your PC.....it usually states the commands there.

Brand Name / make / model / OS / .... will be helpful info .. to get a tech bulletin

Seriously, try what BigAl suggested (though it's unlikely to work if you don't have a brand-name PC) and if that doesn't work, get ahold of a Windows XP CD and reinstall. If you're not too technically-inclined, ask your family computer geek - every family has one.
