BELLFLOWER — A woman gave birth Monday to eight babies in a span of five minutes, only the second time in history live octuplets have been born, doctors said.

The mother, who has not been identified, gave birth to six boys and two girls weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces, and 3 pounds, 4 ounces, doctors at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center told The Associated Press.
The hospital had scheduled a Caesarean section for seven babies, but doctors were surprised when an eighth came out at 10:48 a.m.

"My eyes got to be the size of saucers," Dr. Karen Maples told the Los Angeles Times, explaining her reaction to the last birth. "We just went on and delivered the babies." She said the babies were in stable condition and would probably remain in the hospital for at least two months. She said the mother should be released in a week.

Kaiser spokeswoman Myra Suarez said she could not release any information about the mother, including her condition or whether she used fertility drugs.

"They are all doing the best they can," Suarez said.

"They were all screaming and kicking around very vigorously," Dr. Harold Henry said.

The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in December 1998. They were three months premature and their weights at birth ranged from 11 ounces to 1 pound, 11 ounces.

Associated Press.

That's what scares me about eventually settling down and having kids. If I was the father I'd be in an alcohol-induced coma at this point.

Forum scoop, you read it here first:

She is a neighbor of a friend of mine.

She is single, unemployed and has 6 previous kids ages 8-2 one set of twins. All from artificial insemination. Never married

Allegedly she is infatuated with pregnancy, her parents care for her kids, parents elderly and tried their hardest to inform doctors not to inseminate their daughter. 3 doctors turned her down one did not. Mother is psychologically unfit, Parents fear she will try to become pregnant again within the next month.

You will see the above hit the press within days.

Elderly parents are broke, due to the financial hardship of caring for their daughter and her 6 kids. 8 more have been added.

Parents at a loss emotionally and monetarily.

I will be donating baby clothes.

Sad.

No law against what she did or will do, she cannot be forced into treatment. Its her body.

[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]Neighbors Tell ABC News Woman Is Single Mother Living With Parents

By MIKE VON FREMD and LAUREN SHER

Jan. 29, 2009 —

The California woman who gave birth to eight babies in five minutes Monday may have already been a mother of six, ABC News has learned.

The octuplets, who were born by Caesarean section and delivered by a 46-member team of doctors at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif., arrived nine weeks premature.

The eighth baby shocked the hospital delivery team, which had been planning for a seven-baby delivery for weeks. The two girls and six boys ranged in weight from 1 pound, 8 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces and totaled over 24 pounds.

The woman, whose name has not been released by the hospital, is only the second ever to give birth to octuplets. The hospital staff would not comment on whether she had received fertility drugs, which have been linked with instances of multiple births.

ABC News' Mike Von Fremd visited the home of the woman, who lives with her parents on a quiet cul-de-sac in the Los Angeles suburbs. With none of the typical joyful markings of a new arrival -- balloons, storks, flowers -- visible, the family and most immediate neighbors wanted nothing to do with the media.

"Do us a favor, give us our privacy and get out, shame on you, shame on you," a man from inside the house screamed at Von Fremd.

Outside the family's home, bikes and toddler toys were scattered across the front yard. Neighbors told ABC News that the woman is a single mother in her thirties who already has six other children. It appears the family will live in a three-bedroom house bursting with babies when the octuplets are released from the hospital in an estimated two months.

An 87-year-old woman who lives next door was not at all pleased.

"With our economy they way it is, with California going to hell in a handbasket, why should I be excited about this?" she asked von Fremd. "What is their future?"

Fertility experts have been extremely critical of such high-risk births, which can threaten the life of the mother. The six prior children raise an additional alarm, and the question of what accredited fertility expert would administer fertility drugs to a single mother of six.

"We dodged a bullet here," said Dr. Anne Drapkin Lyerly, assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University.

Raising 14 Kids Costs Over $2 Million

Dr. Charles Sophy, medical director of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, cautioned that giving birth to octuplets would put eight times as much stress on a single mother and pose a daunting task in terms of rearing.

"It costs money to raise children -- to raise these kids is probably going to cost about 2-and-a-half million dollars, just to give them basics," he said. "That is not baseball lessons or piano lessons. That is food, clothing or getting to school every day -- that is a lot of money."

A mother of six on welfare would receive approximately $1,645 a month from the government, according to estimates from child welfare services. A mother of 14 would receive about $2,678 a month in support -- not nearly enough, Sophy says, to create a stable, safe environment for 14 children.

The Department of Children and Family Services would worry that, in a house of 14, there would be a lack of attention or that the children would be at risk of abuse or neglect.

While the hospital has not revealed if the woman received fertility treatments, Sophy said that it is possible to obtain fertility drugs without a traditional doctor's prescription.

"It should be a doctor who prescribes any kind of medication, but as we know, these days through the Internet, through the mail, through other countries, anything is accessible."

The story broken here first at the RX before any other media outlet continuous to grow. The story of the single mother with 6 other kids has now become a national ethical firestorm.

As the ethical debate continuous to grow one thing to keep in mind is currently the media; as a result of a mixture of confidentiality and stigma, will not be reporting on the mother's psychological impairment. The mother's choices are being driven by an out of control obsession with becoming pregnant.

All the Pro-life, fertilization, egg donor, in-vitro, single mom, freedom of choice etc etc debates become moot when you realize that the person making the choices is cuckoo. The parents tried to stop the girl, but she was able find a doctor to impregnate her behind the parents back. After the first 3 kids, the parents became aware of her obsession and tried to stop her. She has 14 kids now and with her obsession still out of control will most likely try to impregnate herself again in the coming months. One good thing, with all the media attention the next doctor she approaches should sent her straight to Psych.

We'll see how long it takes for the national media to catch-up with the Rx.

This should be a mental health debate first not pro-choice

Five or ten years from now the taxpayers will be picking up the bill to raise these kids; this is the best argument in favor of population control. Can't wait until the next minimum wage earner decides to try and break the record.

This lady should be shot in the head.

These kids will inevitably be fucked up and turn out to be a drain on society just like their mother.
