OT: Bone Marrow Registry

Basically you swab the inside of your cheek and mail it back.

You are then in the registry which allows them to check for matches with those that need life saving marrow transplants.

If you are a possible match, you may be asked to donate blood for further testing.

If this testing determines you are a match, you would be asked to donate stem cells (and to take something to increase production for 4 to 6 weeks). Total time requires is 20 - 30 hours over 4 to 6 weeks. This is much less invasive than actual marrow, in which case they put you under.

I have one buddy who was saved from the registry (that's when I joined) and a cousin who donated marrow to my uncle (RIP) even though she wasn't a great match.

• PBSC donation is a non-surgical procedure. For 5 days leading up to donation, you will be given injections of filgrastim. Filgrastim is a medication that increases the number of blood-forming cells in your bloodstream. On the day of donation, blood is removed through a needle on one arm and passed through a machine that separates out the blood-forming cells. The remaining blood is returned to you through the other arm.

if they need actual marrow, it is a surgical procedure with anesthesia, typically people need a week or a little less off of work. would be some pain involved, but just imagine saving someones life for a week of discomfort.

• Bone marrow donation is a surgical procedure that takes place in a hospital operating room. Doctors use needles to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bone. Donors receive anesthesia and feel no pain during the donation

You'd be under during the procedure. So some pain in recovery but you'd have all the meds you wanted fwiw

the thing that pisses me off, there should be some sort of Remuneration,, like,,, 1 full year of YOUR medical insurance paid for?? lol,,, in this context thats not a ton of money, but jesus,, for the sacrifice of giving soooo much,,, we should come togethar on BOTH SIDES of the fence,,, ya know?? noone gets rich,,, but fk,,,, 2 weeks off from work,, 1 week in pretty major pain,, to help mankind,, just seems like there could be other motivating ways to turn peoples minds to the bigger picture,

doesnt it seem like the insuance compaines this would be a GOOD DEAL FOR THEM,,, i mean,,, its gotta cost them less to have real DONORS to cure people faster???

i love it,,, i give more than most,,, and absolutely,, i would do this for ANYONE of my friends or family,,, sigh,,,

I'm on the registry and hot called as being a match. Its very very rare to actually match with someone..only like 4 people had matched the year I did it in western pa. Whole process took at least a few months. They give you a couple physicals, lots of blood draws and stuff confirming your health and stuff. Actual process wad stem cell donation which was like donating blood but took hours and not minutes. Honestly it sucked being hooked up to the machine and not being able to move around at all. Arm was left pretty sore post donation. Also prior to donating they kinda make u sick so your body builds up higher levels of shit to fight off sickness and disease. Was basically a headache for a week ahead of donating. The guy I donating to did end up dying but maybe he got a little extra time from me. Whole process made me feel like a celebrity by the blood bank and be the match people. All my expenses were also paid for. I would do it again but it is a little bit of a pain

It is great for anyone who can and is willing to do it. But it is lengthy recovery time. Procedure is rough but to save someones life is well worth it. Not sure if things have changed but about 10 years ago they marrow was taken from your pelvic area. Recovery time was approx 2-3months (if I remember correctly)
